| Volunteering with animals So, I have some time on my hands and was thinking about volunteering somewhere. Well, I like animals better than people, so I started thinking about that. I already do foster care for the Humane Society - it's been slow lately though. (not many mom cats with litters) I called two vets who say they don't use volunteers. I stopped at a doggy day care/boarding facility and they "can't" use volunteers cause of liability issues and workman's comp. - etc.... Any ideas where else I can look? I never thought it would be so hard to find people who want free help! |

| Do you have a local animal shelter? They are usually looking for volunteers!

| Do you have an organization in your area that leads all the volunteers and pairs them up with agencies that need volunteers? Here, we have Hands on Atlanta and they have an "animal" section of different events you can volunteer with...

| Well, I already do it for the Humane Society. I used to do it for rescue organizations but they were so horrible at communication and getting food and meds to the animals in my care that I finally quit. They were very, very unorganized. I think now one of those groups may have folded. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | OH, YEAH, girl! I lived in Mpls. for 5 years! So, yes, do I ever feel your pain. I should qualify then..."free dog walking..in weather appropriate seasons!" LOL. Well, what about, if you kinda like the idea of it - you could offer free car rides for taking seniors' pets to the vet? Or, do you want to work more directly with the furbutts themselves?

| I am waiting to hear back from an organization that has therapy horses and works with mostly young people who have disabilities. It is about 1 mile down the road from me. I think it would be really, really cool. My son used to take riding lessons and I miss hanging out with the horses. We'll wait and see. |

| I'd want to volunteer with animals too. The thing stopping me is I am afraid of the horrors I may see that would break my heart. |

I guess I wouldn't want to wash them. I have four of my own to wash and groom - more would be overkill, I think. Unless they would just want you help hold hard to manage animals or something. I am going to call the woman about the horses today. | |

| Rescues and shelters always need transporters too. When a rescue pulls an animal and has to have drivers make a long trip. They all drive short distances. It is pretty amazing how far these transports can go. They can take a dog from the east coast to the west with a lot of help. Or the shelter might need someone to drive pets to the vet. Or you could offer to evaluate animals for rescues that are in shelters or do home visits. I don't know if you would want to do those types of things but I know they always need help with these things. Good for you for volunteering. If you lived in Va we would welcome you to volunteer at my shelter.
