I was attacked today...
 

Early this morning, as every other morning, Louis and I went for our walk. A loose dog spotted us and began to run towards Louis. I did not react until I realized the body language this dog was approaching Louis with. His chest was up, his ears erect and his eyes in a fixed glare toward Lou. I let him get no more than three feet close to us when I busted out the pepper spray. It was enough to scare the dog away from us, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to KEEP him away, He then fixed his eyes at me (after he rubbed his eyes on the grass, and blinking numerously) That was it, he forgot about Lou and only saw me. A person in a mini van had stopped and saw what was going on and couldn't decide if I was in enough danger for them to help apparently I not, they drove off. I squirted the dog again and he backed off, so I began walking away until I heard him charging toward me again. I remember hearing Cesar Millan's voice in my head saying "remain calm and assertive" "they (dogs) can sense your energy" I then walked toward the dog with my chest out as cocky as I could and said "tsst no!" and squirted him again he ran off for good this time...

An hour later, on our way home, as I was approaching the very same road of our earlier encounter, a lady informed me that a dog was loose and had tried to bite her and so I told her I had met the dog earlier so I proceeded to call our security as I was turning the corner of the street I live on he jolts out of the bushes I begin to squirt and stomp and he backs off, ( i informed security of our where-abouts) but his glare was filled with malice.... Shutter.... I spotted a lady with another dog coming our way and told her to turn back because he is aggressive and he charges again towards us!!! Now she is yelling and says to me to get out of there since I have a smaller dog but it was too late. We never got bit and never was there any contact made thank God! Just when I began to feel hopeless my mother-in-law drives up and we are able to get away safely. He was getting closer and closer and braver and braver he bullied us for half a block... She drove us the rest of the way home... I was stunned how he was just fixed on me with his aggressive demeanor, he didn't even care about getting run over all he saw was me.... I called security about an hour later and they informed me they had grabbed him and called its owner. I'm just glad we got away... this time.

My pepper spray was about 10 years old so I'm getting myself a newer more potent one. Sorry if this offends anyone but I will do all I can to keep safe and use reasonable force in real or apparent danger. * the dog was a rodegian/lab mix, about 80-90 pounds. Hopefully my experience ( which wasn't too horrible) will help someone else deal with a similar situation.

How scarey, I am glad no one was hurt.

i work at petsmart and we sell somehting thats kind of like pepper spray for animals. we have been selling out of it like crazy lately.... i dont know whats going on but i just keep hearing stories of these kind of situations...

thank god you guys are ok... im sure ur situation will help others understand what to do in that situation.

I applaud your use of pepper spray. Good for you and it's great you kept your senses enough to respond...I'm not sure I could've in that situation.

I didn't know PS carried that. I may have to get some. We have several lose dogs in my neighborhood that could do seriious damage to myself or one of my dogs if they wanted to. I have pretty much quiit walking the dgs because of it.

How scary for you and lucky you had pepperspray with you. Glad you and Louis were unharmed.

How scarry that must of been! I am glad that you did not get hurt. Hopefully the owners of that dog will keep it leashed for now on and get it some training!

Wow! Im glad you and Lou are ok! How scary that must have been... I think its very smart to take a walk with pepper spray! Your way of thinking kept you from being in a serious mess! :)

I am sorry you had to deal with this! Normally I would be the last person to say this, but if the dog is that aggressive than maybe the only thing to do would be to put him to sleep. Did you file a police report?? If the owner is not able to control him and to keep him contained he should not be allowed to keep him, what if this happens again and it is a small child or an elderly person who does not have pepper spray or cannot get away fast enough?

You and you yorkie are so lucky to had not been seriously hurt....Thank goodness you did have that spray, no telling what would have happened....

It angers me to no end when someones dog is out running the streets....every now and then I'll find one roaming in my yard.....and I have it completely fenced in...a couple of them just sailed over the fence like an Olympian track star....very scary.....

You did the ABSOLUTE right thing in protecting yourself! I would definitely find out how old pepper spray has to be before you throw it out and get some new spray but I think you did good! I'm sooo glad that everyone's okay and that they got him out of there! My boyfriend and I were walking in our neighborhood the other day and this HUGE german shepard tried to attack us...well my bf didn't back down and he's a pretty muscular guy and about 6'3. The dog came back but probably realized since we weren't backing down that it better not try anything, it's scary...I mean you gotta protect yourself...

OH MY God, but bold and bad of this dog, thank God you all were safe, but I feel had your mom in law not come when she did, it could have been worst. That owner needs to KEEP that dog CONFINED or do something more drastic. You used pepper spray? I would have done worse than that, if I felt my life was in danger of a dog without its owner and also aggressive, DOGS DO KILL humans you know. Glad you all are ok. You need to ask the police about who the owner is and confront them, I would

You know, I had thought about this... I have been struggling with fear/ paranoia. I had my hubby take him for a walk today, but tomorrow I have to go out there and I have to admit I am dreading it. I would feel a lot better if the owners really knew what happened. I'm not sure security let them know the details. I have also thought about having him put down, but there was no actual physical contact... would that even matter?

It wasn't the police it was our develpoment's security. I agree with you and I KNOW that if my mom in law came just in time. I sincerely feel that this will happen again... I think I am going to call security and ask for the owners info if they still have it. I would like to speak to the owners.... You can't imagine how terrified I am still. Last night every time I would close my eyes I would see this dog's face... his eyes... so mean ( shutter)

you are so lucky. i feel you did the right thing and i would do that to. i carry pepper spray all the time (with or without my kayla with me.) keep on lookout for that dog and be careful.

that's crazy! I think I'm going to get pepperspray for when i walk Rocky and Bella. I'm glad you guys are o.k! I think you handled the situation very well.

If it were me I think I'd probably wet my pants and scream like a crazy woman while running. I'm getting me some spray and I'm going to try to remember your advice, being firm and saying NO!

You sure kept a cool head. I applaud you for that. Thank heavens neither
of you were hurt. I would follow threw and make sure that dog was reported not just given back to it's owner;s. Next time could really be bad especially
if a small child is walking with someone and it goes after that child or anyone
else for that matter. Good idea to carry PS with you. I'll have to get some.

If you can find out the owner's info, I wouldn't confront them, I'd just turn it over to animal control. They will report the incident and go see the dog and the owners. It is probably best that they don't know who reported them. If you call 311 in an incident like that, the closest animal control officer OR police officer will come to the area. The dog doesn't have to bite you to be agressive. And if it happens two more times they will put the dog down. It is good to get a report filed with the right people.
