Anyone have toy(?) poodle? Well as a lot of you know I am in the puppy mood, I have been researching all kinds of different breeds(toy poodles, chinese crested, biewers, maltese, papillons) thinking maybe eventually we would add another. I love the yorkie breed so I have even thought of adding another of those, I had inquired about Rachel's little guy too. My hubby hasn't been 100% with me on this idea, but I have been working hard on him for a few days now, and he is coming around. At first it was our finances he was worried about(the extra vet bills), but I told him I have a new job taking extra cash now watching my brothers kids and I'd use that.He also said he doesn't want to be a part of the housebreaking(going in and out), which I don't mind anyway. I think he is going to let me !! Now I am so confused, because I don't know what breed I want, I love them all! If it were up to me and I had the space I would have one of each, hee hee. Anyway, I have a friend that I spoke with today to get some poodle advice and she has a little black male toy poodle, he is the cutest, I went to see him. (I hate the word toy,but she says that is what they are called, I don't know.) that is left out of a litter that is not spoken for. He is 9wks. and weighs 1 1/2 lbs. His mom and dad are both about 5-6lbs. I think she said. I have seen the mom(she is black and small) the dad isn't hers so I haven't seen him. So I am wondering is this little boy going to be small(she estimates about 6lbs.) when I look at the charts I get 4lbs. Is this a healthy weight for this age? How can you tell if his fur will stay black, will it grey? She said it wouldn't. I wonder if it would get along with my other 3, yorkie, chihuhua and a pomeranian. When I seen him I fell in love, but could that just be my heart thinking first again.. So any advice on this issue would be appreciated. Should I get him, or should I add another yorkie, or another breed? I get so excited when I think of adding him to our family. Also what is the usual price of a toy poodle? |
I do shes a sweet girl .I paid $350.00 but i drove about 200 miles to get her it was her mothers first litter.the mother and father was pure black so far shes stayed black ,shes in my avatar. |
1 Attachment(s) Heres a pic of her |
She is adorable. How old is she and what does she weigh? This girl is asking $399, but she lives within 10 minutes of me. |
I think $399 is about average. My mom paid $450 for hers. I had to call her and ask her lol. |
she will be 2 in january and shes about 6 or 7 pounds.her temperment is awsome shes very loving and she gets along with my yorkie and my shih-tzu,I have my 3 favorite breeds of furbabys .$ 399 is not a bad price for the poodle. |
Thanks for doing that. I guess where I paid $1400 for Lily I thought $399 was almost unreal. I guess poodles aren't as popular as a yorkie, maybe that is why the difference in price. |
i had a black toy poodle (tazy) a few years back before a coyote got to him. he was also smaller about 4 pounds, he was the cutest and smartest little guy, we had him for 9 years and he did start to get grey about 7 years in. Now we have a Chocolate colourd one (Toffee) he is a bit bigger but weighs only 5.5 pounds, i wish i had a picture, because he gets the cutest hair cut, little pom poms on the bottom of his legs..! |
also i think its soo cute having differnt breeds, people must always stop and look at them when you go for walks! |

As to size, I have never found the weight charts to be accurate for poodle puppies. A 9 week old 1 1/2 lb puppy should stay small. My 3 week old pups are over a pound already. I expect them to be 6-8lbs full grown, based on previous pups. $400 for a toy poodle pup sounds about average around here. That is what I charge for my pups. I also offer (free) doggie sitting when the families go on vacation or any other reason and discounted grooming so that I can watch them grow and see them often! I love Toy Poodles, they are very intelligent, affectionate and are VERY easy to housetrain and teach commands. My vote is for the little poodle boy!! |
That was some very helpful ino, thanks. I will be checking between his toes. I think I am going to go see him again this evening. Quote:

2 Attachment(s) I think you would just fall in love with a toy poodle. Tinker is 3 years old and such a joy to have. I paid $300 for her and she is worth every penney. Here are two pictures of her. Good luck with whatever breed you choose. |

I have a poodle that's about 12 pounds so she's not a toy, but she's not a standard either. She's the quietest most wonderful little girl. I think a poodle would really compliment your yorkies. |

I have a mini poodle that looks just like this! We love Martin to pieces, he weighs about 10 or so pounds. He is so good with Sam and kids. He never barks except when he is hungry! |
OH MY GOODNESS!! I can NOT wait until you get a poodle!!! I will live thru you! hee,hee  For a long time, we search for a small black female poodle...that is what my daughter wanted. We never could find one...we found the silver, the apricot, so on, but no small black girls!!! Then, LilyGrace happened and it was love at first site.....so we stopped our search for the black poodle girl! I just LOVE them to pieces!!! They are one of the best dogs EVER!!! Besides Yorkies...OF COURSE!!! My aunt at a tiny little male (black) from the time I could remember...his name was Buttons.....he finally passed from old age (I mean, he was way up there in years) and she has never gotten another dog! He was the best dog! I have several friends with poodles (of all sizes) and I just love each one of them. They seem to be so well mannered and easy to train and so loyal. Good luck with your search and keep us updated! :justahug: |
I love the name Buttons!! I am going to see him again tonight, it is not definate, but he is adorable. Quote:

My friend has one that is very cute, are you planning on getting one? |
I had the night from Hell last night!! The direct tv guys came at 2:30 and didn't leave until 8pm. They carried leaves all over my house, at least they took their shoes off, but I have already spent most of the morning cleaning. UGH!! So my family and I didn't get to eat dinner until almost 8:30, I missed my Weight Watcher meeting and I didn't get to go so the little boy poodle. Then I got home and the direct tv still wasn't working so I spent an hour and a half on the phone with them. I was so stressed and tired I didn't get any sleep. So I am hopeing to go see him today...I will get some pictures. I took some last time with my cell, but they are crappy. Then everyone that knows about poodles can tell me if he looks like he should as a puppy, not being able to see the dad has me confused, as I like to see both parents when I get a puppy if I can. Thanks for letting me vent everyone...and a happy note Good Morning To Everyone!!! |
I grew up with a miniature apricot poodle so naturally that was the first thing I wanted when I moved away from home. I searched and searched for a toy black female but after hearing that a lot of blacks turn silver/gray, I was leary about the color. I was really set on a black one. And then I went to see a litter of RED toys. OMG.... I fell in love. Had never heard of the red color. I wanted a little girl but this one little boy just stole my heart and picked me so I had to take him home. He (Daxton or Dax, for short) was copper penny red until he was much older..... then he kinda faded to a color that was a little darker than apricot. I guess that's their way of "going gray". His normal weight was around 7 pounds until his later years when he had heart problems. He was on heart medication for his last 3 years or so and did just great with it. We lost him about 3.5 years ago at the age of 15. I tell you he was our world..... our "first-born" before the children. The most loyal, laid-back dog there ever was. If you get this pup, you won't regret it. The only word of advise I had was to look between the paw pads for any white or silver because that's what I've been told would mean that a black one will turn silver/gray but I see you've already gotten that info. And no... "toy" is not a "bad word". There are three sizes for poodles.... toy, miniature and standard. Dax was a toy, a miniature is maybe around 20 lbs (can't remember exactly) and a standard is really big. Good luck! |
Love the name Dax Quote:

I think if you find out for sure about the parents' size, you should be able to pin down a good estimated weight. I didn't think poodles were any different in that aspect. You have to take into consideration the parents plus past generations for the size issue. You said you didn't see the dad but did the breeder say what color he is and what his weight is? And of course, ask about any health issues the parents may have. Poodles, same as Yorkies, can have issues with luxating patella and collapsed trachea. Dax had a very mild case of LP in one leg but it very rarely bothered him. He also had a mild case of collapsed trachea but that could have been from us using a collar and leash - this was way before I knew of the dangers of leashes attached to collars. We now use a harness for Tatum. Good luck in your search! Edited to add.... we loved the name Dax too. The one I grew up with was named Max and I wanted to go similar for sentimental reasons. :-) |
Aww, sorry you had such a horrible night. I can't wait to see pictures of this little boy. I know nothing about poodles but reading this thread makes me want one.:p |

Just so everyone understands, Poodles are not classified by their weight. It goes by their height. From the AKC Website: "The Standard Poodle is over 15 inches at the highest point of the shoulders. The Miniature Poodle is 15 inches or under at the highest point of the shoulders, with a minimum height in excess of 10 inches. The Toy Poodle is 10 inches or under at the highest point of the shoulders." Soneal, I am sorry you had a bad night, and hope you get to go see the puppy today! I am anxious for pictures!! |
4 Attachment(s) I got pictures!! I took my son out of school to go with me, he was dyeing to see him. Tell me what everybody thinks, does he look like a toy poodle should look? He has NO white between his pads, so I guess he will be black for sure. He was a ball of energy too, so cute. The girl said I should not try and potty train him to the outside right now, it is cold, to use pee pads. i hate the pads, so should I wait or go ahead and take him out doors? I don't want the little guy to get sick from the cold so any suggestions on that? I trained my last two in spring/summer. |
OMG! what a beautiful puppy. You should definitely get him:thumbup:  :D |
