Good luck! |
Sorry if this was already posted, but here is the inner workings of a collapsed trachea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pA-MNCdmAU4 |
My yorkie was just diagnosed with a collapsed trachea today. Poor baby. I took a video of one of his honking episodes in to the vet as he never takes me serious and after watching the video he immediately said that he needed to take x-rays. He saw a slight collpase in the chest region (worst place to have it). He is on a cough suppresant for now. His honking episodes usually only last about 15 to 20 seconds but can happen up to a dozen times a day. Any time Dylan gets excited the honking starts. He's only a year and a half old and is definitely not overweight. He's actually on the skinny side. I hope the medicine doesn't affect his appetite as he is not very interested in eating the way it is. |
Thank You Thank you for all of the input. There is a definite sound "honking" and taking the video to the vet is so smart. Sending healing thoughts through this post to all the pups who have the ailment. Warmly, Deborah PS Even with reverse sneezing, it is frightening to watch them try to get breath. I also believe when they have numerous teeth extracted, it takes time for them to adjust to the absence of front teeth. Breathing becomes a new lesson. |
worried... I'm new here, and recently added a Yorkie and a Yorkiepoo to the family (we already have a Chorkie). Anyways, Kipper (our yorkie) is about 4yo and as sweet as can be, BUT he gets super excited easily especially when balls are involved and when he's excited (sometimes even just a little excited) he starts making these grunting noises, sometimes he gets so excited running around playing with his ball or the other dogs that he gets to a point that he has mouth opened, honking noise, looks like labored breath, and this ended with a choking cough type sound. We try to calm him down, get a drink, etc. and he has that weird noise with heavy breathing (mouth open) until he finally settles down, lays down and breaths normal again. This labored breathing seems to happen almost anytime he isnt laying down, but then since we brought him home he's been way to excited to play then sleep. He was in a home of working parents, and was crated all day till they came home, and also crated for bed. Here, they have the run of the house but they seem to enjoy the crate at night so we leave the door open and him and his son Bub (the 3yo yorkiepoo) sleep together in there. After reading up on noises these pets have, i now am really worried its a callopsed trachea. The old owners never said anything about this, and when we met at the park they were on leashes and he was doing the choking thing, but he was also pulling on leash so i guess i didnt realize it was a problem. What do you think? sorry for the book! |

I have 3 yorkies my oldest male has been diagnosed with collapse trachea. I'm happy to say I really think yours is just reverse sneezing! Pam |
We have 5 between my daughter and I. My 3 do what your describing. My oldest, Yogi I had in and out of the vets when he was a baby convinced he had a ct. and he had every test for this and it was ruled out..My 3 have it worse when its allergy season, and when they are excited. The little one Suki, does this more when she is playing hard and running. Reverse sneezing is so very common in these little guys..I was at my best freinds this morning and she has a 2 year old male Maltese and he was doing the same when I walked in her house. If he appears as this getting worse rather than the same, I would take him to your vet and have him take a look just to be sure. The only thing that sounds different and concerns me about your Kipper is has to lay down to recoup. Are his eyes watery or is he scratching alot???Was just thinking of allergies? |
Reverse Sneeze I was wondering about this myself. My little Desire does this. The vet saw her and said it was a reverse sneeze. It still scares me but it is harmless. Thank you for posting it. It seems spring is the worst time for her Debbie |
thanks for all the replies, and sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, but with 7 kids, 3 furbabies, and 3 daycare kids it does get a little hectic around here! Kipper has stopped (well for the most part) the super scary noises, and now just sounds like reverse sneezing on occasion. the noises just last a few days, but i think he finally got used to the choas of our family, and once the excitement settled down so did he. of course his love for balls is the same! lol....he still loves to bark at them when he cant reach them, and that isnt often considering the 1st night with us, he managed to get one off the washer we had tried to take away from him to get him to go to bed, then hid it in my nightstand (without him seeing me, plus in the dark) and he still got it! now, if only i could get those boys to quit piddling on everything! ugh...they go outside and always potty out there, just do it in here also! |
Finnigan just started doing these reverse sneezes this week and I was worried that it maybe a CT, but after I found this thread I know that its definitely not! I know its an old thread, but thanks to everyone who posted links and info, its very helpful! |
