![]() This is Ruby's second litter and she is a lot more relaxed with them. What that means is she is happier to leave them for a few minutes many more times during the day than with her first litter. She went very skinny with her first litter and thankfully this time we managed to bulk her up a bit more before she whelped by feeding her lots of fresh meant and eggs etc and varying food when she might otherwise have eaten less. The puppies are all looking very healthy and strong having put on quite a lot of weight in the first few days. There is a constant worry one will get injured in the whelping box by being squashed somewhere but that eases as they get stronger. The pig bars round the whelping box help a lot. Ruby is currently drinking a lot of goats milk and eating chicken, ham, eggs and puppy food but she is a bit fussy still and the demand for milk will increase steadily over the next 2-4 weeks. Ruby has access to the rest of the house all day and the garden several hours a day but she still prefers to spend most of her time with the puppies. We don't remove dew claws as our puppies are destined for pet homes and we don't see the need as it appears very few dogs indeed have problems with dew claws and in any case owners can elect to have them removed later at spaying/neutering if they wish. The puppies eyes and ears will start to open around 2 weeks of age so at the moment they are blind and deaf.

![]() This reminds of the akita (I think) pups a few years ago. They were an internet sensation. The owner also did a live feed from the time they were born until they left for their furever homes. Those little guys were so mischievous. I watched that feed everyday. I have a feeling I'll be tuning into this one every day too. I can't wait until they start playing. That's really going to be fun to watch. Please keep the feed going if you can. ![]()

![]() Only 1 week to go until they start opening their eyes and ears ...... We have had to shave mums tail hair off and al lthe hair around her inner thighs as she is getting matted. She looks a bit like a very badly 1/4 groomed Chinese Crested in parts ... She has poo in her beard and whiskers that could be mistaken for those beads some girls have in their hair when they go on holiday ... Last litter we pretty much shaved her all over just before she whelped but that was partly due to getting a flea infestation along with every other dog and cat household in the neighbourhood !! This time she's been left largely un groomed ...

![]() Amusingly, we sometimes have the live stream on the main TV and Ruby will protect that and the whelping box if the Labs get too close to it. Last litter we had the live stream on a PC monitor in the lounge, with the whelping box in the kitchen so we could monitor the puppies whilst watching TV etc. Ruby soon worked out what she was looking at whilst in the lounge with us and check out what the puppies were up to by watching the PC monitor in the lounge ! If the puppies got too vocal Ruby would look at the kitchen door and then at the monitor and seemingly decide if it was worthwhile going into the kitchen to sort them out. Next litter perhaps we can use Google Glass (the dog version) so she can monitor her puppies in her own tech specs ........ Last edited by Corfield; 07-10-2014 at 09:26 AM.
