Just when we thought we were safe from winter moose foraging in our backyard, today there was a porcupine on top of the bird house!

It wasn't moving much, so I'm not positive Eddie knew what it was. But he definitely barked like crazy when I held him up to it and said "porcupine." Jack, of course, can't see that far, so he could care less.

I've never seen a porcupine in the city, least of all the backyard, so I'm not real happy about it. Hopefully, he won't hang out here. He did make for some good pictures, though!

He's so cute!!!! You have a regular "Omaha's Wild Kingdom" going on in your back yard!

I thought porcupines were a lot bigger... Like basset hound big.

Better check the yard before you let the boys out!

Mike! What great pics.... I tell you what, you need to write a children's book series called Adventures with Eddie and Jack and illustrate them with some of your fantastic pics. You will be even more famous than you already are....

NO JOKE! I worked in an elementary school library for 13 years and ..... you have the material to make best sellers!

Aww, thanks. You know, I've thought about that from time to time. I just don't know if people would buy a book about someone else's dog. I probably will try it someday, though, just to see how it comes out. What age group do you think would be best?

As for whether they are harmless or not, no. They are not harmless. Check out this pit bull after an encounter with a porky.

Is that a real photo???? Do they shoot the spikes or something???

I have seen bigger porcupines. I hope mama doesn't come around. I have no idea how Eddie would react if he sees one on the ground. If he thinks it's a dog, he'll try to play with it. :eek:

Mike, they WOULD buy a book about someone else's dog. Believe me they would. We had a traveling author with his dog visit our school. Of course Alaska Mike and crew would be totally awesome. Just think of the real life stories you could share. I'll be looking forward to you visiting Rome in the near future.

Yes, it's real. Well, I got it off the 'Net, but I've seen dogs after encounters with porcupines that look similar. They don't shoot the quills, but the quills come off real easily as soon as they poke into anything.

When dogs go up and try to bite it, the quills go into their soft skin and don't come out. A friend's dogs used to tangle with them all the time, and she had to take the dogs to the vet to get them removed.

Wow, not as sweet as he looked then! I'm glad we don't get them over here as cute as they are!

I hope nothing happens to Jack and Eddie and the Pocupine stays high up! :(

BTW, I like your new avatar... it's very artistic! :)

Well, thanks for the encouragement. It would be a combination of the things I love most in life. Kids, Yorkies, photography and writing. I've actually been organizing all my photos for the last couple weeks (more than 8,000!) with that idea in mind.

Holy! Cow!!!!!! Poor doggie! That's incredible how much damage that cute little porcupine can do!

Mike, I'll send you a kevlar vest and pants, along with a full face helmet so you can througly check the yard before you let the boys out.

LOL, I'd need one! Some dogs just don't get it. My ex-roomate's dogs used to tangle with them monthly and come back with quills almost as bad as that pit bull. They NEVER learned.
