First moose, now birds!

Eddie was acting particularly skittish on our walk today. He kept trying to go home. Usually that means he smells a moose, but there were no fresh tracks. I decided to cut the walk short and head home when I came upon this imprint in the snow.

Believe me, both dogs went back on leash in a hurry!

A bird. A BIG bird. See the imprint from the wings and the tail and the big hole where its talons hit the snow? Something swooped down and gobbled up something tiny.

Oh wow!!! Really sad for the creature that got caught, but those tracks are very impressive. Excellent photo. I think you should enter it in a contest.

WOW Is that one COOOOOOL Picture ! You get the best shots and lol on that little snow yorkie and his booties

that was a HUGE bird ! Something out of the dinosaur age I think :p

What an incredible photo! Poor poor Eddie and Jack. Will they EVER be able to take a walk without moose and birdies?

I think I'm going to rename our park Jurassic Park! When we went back to get a picture with Eddie in the frame, a startled moose sprinted through the middle of the park. I didn't think Eddie saw him, but he went ballistic. Poor guy. Now he's barking at the window again. Maybe I should just take him to doggie daycare!

OMG! That was a huge bird! Thanks for explaining it cuz if I try to open attachments with this computer it zaps me off. I'm going to look at the pics again tomorrow when I'm at work:)

I'm actually hoping it was something less sinister. We have a lot of large ravens in the park, and I don't believe they eat live prey. I'm thinking -- hoping -- that maybe one of them swooped down to investigate something it thought was dead. There are no tracks leading to or away from the area.

If it wasn't a raven, my guess would be owl or hawk. Even at that size, it's too small for an eagle, I think.

Just knowing that thing is out there would give me the hee bee jeebeez. I would be scared to take them out at night to pee!

That is the most Quirkey, Amazing, Beautiful picture! You can clearly see it's a bird that landed in full. Just look at the individual impressions of the feathers!

How often can ANY one see an impression in snow like that? You hit it on the nail with Jurassic Park! You have Terradactals & Mooseasurus!

I bet the Audubon Society or a Bird Watcher club in your area would love to have those pictures!

It's huge compared to Eddie! Think it could have been an Osprey? Eeeek!

Keep your eyes on the sky! I do when I take my girls out. We have Hawks that's been known to swoop away small dogs.

I've been reading up on ravens, and I think that's what it was. There are a bunch of them that hang out at the park, and their wingspan can be 45."

The good news is they have never attacked Eddie before. He's even chased them. The bad news is that half their diet is live prey, usually small rodents. That's probably what he swooped down on.

Hopefully, Yorkies are too big!

What awesome pictures. I remember Alaska ravens. They are big - and grouchy.

We were in Haines once and watched a showdown between a raven and a bald eagle. The eagle was just sitting on a tree branch that the raven must have thought was his. The raven fussed at the eagle but was ignored. The raven finally got up all his courage and jumped at the eagle --- and the eagle left. The raven all but beat his wings against chest after that.

I believe it. They are strange birds. Most other birds have the sense to fly south for the winter, but ravens gather here in the winter. We hardly ever see them in the summertime, but in the winter, when we're below zero, they are thick.

That was some picture!:eek: Although frightening it was also beautiful. I had no idea a Raven could be that large!
It's amazing how strong a dog's instinks really are. Your just too smart
