New name ?
 

Hi all. Piccolo has a new friend. After listening to your advice I bought a 9 m old girl. aher name is Annie but I'm not very crazy about her name.
Do you think I can change it or is it too late?
Looking at her pictures what's your suggestions she looks like ? I mean what name will suit her best ?

I would think that after 9months that would be too long to change it but who knows. I like the name Annie that was my Chloes mamas name!

If you really are not wanting to keep her first name, then how about Angie? The sound would be similar. She sure is a beautiful girl.

Eddie was originally Teddy, and Jack was originally Cuddles, and we had no problem changing names. Eddie was just a pup, but Jack was 10 when we changed his. We called him Jack-Cuddles for a while and then dropped the Cuddles.

My only complaint is I want to teach you how to focus your camera! You're focused on the chair in the background. What kind of camera is it? Digital? What brand, model number? I'll look it up and see if I can help.

Your new Annie is beautiful. The name fits her. Pretty name, pretty girl.

I'm very worried. They don't get along at all ! Piccolo (13 m) was mad at me when I brought Annie ( 9 m).
He snapped at her and I think he was bitting her in not a playful manner at all.
She wanted to play with him since she came from home of 7 breeder's yorkies ranging from a few weeks old to 4 y old.
She is a toyhog and all the toys belonged to Piccolo, though I bought 2 new toys for her.
Yesterday and today - all I'm doing is seperating them because I'm not sure if all this fighting is serious or not.
I called the breeder and she said she would take her back if they continue fighting like that. She gave me a week. I'm not sure if it's enough time or not.
It was very nice of her since she already mailed registration papers.
I am already madly in love with her and don't know what to do...

OMG !!! That's exactly what I was doing - scolding Piccolo, telling him he was a very bad boy and pumpering Annie.
No blood shed so far and nobody got hurt but I am freaking out that it would happen.
Annie steals ALL the toys and guards them with her life ! I packed them in a bag an hour ago and will take out one at a time tomorrow.

Oh my goodness, our little yorkies are so much like preschoolers aren't they?..lol...I like the name Annie, I think it is sweet...but whatever you start calling her she will respond to....
I am bringing home another puppy in a few weeks and I am a bit worried about them getting along, but the breeder, my vet and friends I have talked to says it can takes a few days to a couple of weeks for them to form a relationship.

Don't feel bad. It's in our nature to protect the weak and scold the bullies, but from what I've read, dogs don't think the same way. They are trying to decide who's No. 2 in the house behind you. If you coddle the weaker one, you are unnaturally giving that one No. 2 status. And No. 3 is going to resent it.

If anything, you're supposed to make the real No. 2 (the one who wins the fights) feel special. Special treats. Special mom time. The first to get a hello when you come home. If they feel secure in their position in the pack, they will see no need to fight to establish it.

It can be difficult to do, but No. 3 will appreciate you in the long run if the beatings stop.

At least that's what the books say!

You are a gold mine of knowledge ! It's very interesting what you wrote about establishing #2 and #3 position. I think I want Piccolo to be #2 becuause he was first but on the other hand I don't want him to bully Annie.

She looks sweet but she starts the fights and a few times Piccolo turned on his back in a submitive position. I felt sooo sorry for him.
well, I just observe them and see what happens.

Annie is a cute name but it could also be her middle name and you give her a new 1st name. On animal planet some Rescues and pounds have dogs that are there for a while. The staff has given them a name and the new owners change it. Most people have a name picked out already and change it after they get the pet. They say after a week they are use to the new name and these were adult dogs. My daughter named our new pup Koko Chanel, but I liked Kamari, so she will be Koko Kamari Jones. lol

Annie is darling! I love the name, it fits her! Plus that's the only name she knows! :o) Give her a nickname, and she will come annie and the nickname!
We call Zoey "baby girl" and she comes running! She knows both!

Mike's giving some really great advice. He's right, they need to decide which of them is in charge (after you) and it needs to work out on their terms. Whoever ends up being submissive will actually be happier once it's worked out. Please, don't feel bad! Dogs are pack animals, and once they work it out you will see some amazing things.

I have a 15 year old dog. Two years ago I brought Ginger in as a pup and he wasn't happy at all. But, they worked it out, and the old guy even tries to play sometimes. They never fight over food, bones, etc (they used to in the beginning)...and seem to have a good relationship.

When I brought Bernie home a few weeks ago, we thought Kirby was going to eat him. But, beyond breaking up the first fight (which was getting bad quickly) we stayed out of it. By the third day they were sharing a blanket.

And Ginger has fallen madly in love...:rolleyes: (but even she and Bernie had a couple of battles at first)

They can and will work it out. Hang in there.:)

Congrats on the new girl Barb! I really like the name Annie, but it would be super easy to change her name if you were't happy with it. Angel is cute too.

I always thought it was a good rule of thumb when you bring a second dog into the home is to always pay more attention to the first dog so that they don't feel they are being replaced by doggie #2. Things like giving Piccolo the first treat, first to get food, toys, chews, etc. Since Annie is coming from a place with lots of yorkies, she'll be used to waiting for her food, toys, etc. Maybe Piccolo's not accepting Annie because he sees you coddling her and doting on her - when it used to be him getting 100% of your attention.

When I first bought Ruthie home and she and Oscar started play fighting, I wasn't sure if it was playing or not - and how far to let it go. I know now that their fighting is strictly play - they've never gotten into a brawl. Ruthie is the #2 dog here though, not Oscar. You may want Piccolo to be #2, but Annie may very well establish herself as #2 - either way, once that is established, both will be happy. Unless they are squealing and the fighting looks vicious, I would let them be. From the pictures it looks like Annie is about Piccolo's size so I wouldn't worry tooooo much when they start to get into it a bit. Mike gave some awesome advice - I'm sure that in time Piccolo will learn to love Annie, but a week isn't really enough time for them to establish a bond.

The name is growing on me and I probably will keep it.
It doesn't seem like they're going to kill each other any more.

I never had a girl and I had dogs all my life. Annie is 9m old and not spayed yet. The breeder told me she did'n have her first heat yet (Annie not the breeder :) ) . I'm going to spay her asap if I decide to have her but I don't know anything about heats and I'm really freaking out that it will happen before spaying. Is it bad ? What age do girls should have their first heat ?

I will appreciate any help with this matter.

Of course you can change her name, many dogs from the pound end up with many names over the years. Call her give her a treat each time you call her by her new name and she'll learn it very fast.

Have you had her vet checked yet? When you do take her in, discuss spaying with your vet. I think the sooner you do it, the better - hopefully before her first heat. I am a HUGE advocate of spaying/neutering, but it's your decision. Even if you decide to think about it a little longer, and wait until after her first heat, you can still get her spayed down the road. Having it done before her first heat will reduce the chances of mammory cancer greatly. It may also reduce some of her aggression issues towards Piccolo.

Oh, I will definitely spay her asap. I was just wondering when they get their first heat. And what should I do if she gets it before beeing spayed. How long does it last ? Should I put a beelyband on her ? Oh, I'm really freaking out here....
I didn't take to my vet yet. The breeder uses a vet in Caledon and said that it'll be at least half the price I paid for Piccollo's neutering ($600) with 4 baby teeth removed. Annie has only one baby tooth left and it's very loose.

Awwwww ! she is beautiful! I had an Annie once.. She was 9 years old an I didn't really care for the name Annie, so I changed it to Anastasia.. Still called her Annie. She was a beautiful little girl. She got Diabetes an her kidneys got really bad so I had to send her to Rainbow Bridge. I missed her so much that I had to get me another little Girl. I now have 3 furbabies. Two Yorkies and 1 Maltese.

I don't know much about heat cycles, but I'm pretty sure that she can start her heat cycle without you really knowing - unless you know the signs. I don't know them myself, lol... As far as I know it can be anytime after 8mths. I was lucky and got Ruthie spayed before she came into heat. The sooner you can get her in, the better - your vet will know if she's in heat. If she does happen to get it, there are little sanitary type diapers you can get - a bellyband won't work. You may find that she doesn't bleed much at all though - some dogs bleed very little, or they keep themselves clean.

DEFINITELY take her to your own vet though, even if the breeder has taken her to her own vet. Prices can vary unfortunately from one vet to another. I paid just under 1000 for Oscar's neuter, microchip and 14 teeth extractions. Ruthie (different vet) cost just under $500 for her spay and 12 teeth extractions. Be leary of a price that sounds too good to be true... if it's too low, I would wonder why. I have heard that the costs are standard across the board - and if one vet is offering a drastically lower price, it's because they are cutting corners somewhere. Don't shoot the messenger here folks, that's just what I have heard... I would think you should be able to get her spayed for around $300 though, maybe $250... but would be skeptical if it was much less than that for our area.
