What's in a name?? Hi, I'm relatively new to this forum and I am HOOKED!! You all have a genuine love for dogs and I have learned so much. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to post. What wonderful stories! I've been on here everyday since I found it. I have a 7 year old male schnauzer (Woody) and my 3 month old male yorkie, Bo. You can guess who rules the roost. I was just wondering...How did you decide what to name your yorkie? I'll start: we were all really undecided and my 11 year old son, after much deliberation, said "Turbo" and my 18 year old daughter said "Turbo Glenn" since Glenn is my husband and son's middle name (and Woody's as well :D ). Well, not wanting to introduce my little guy as Turbo for the rest of his illustrious life, in a moment of inspiration, I added "and we can call him Bo for short" and to my great relief my son concurred. So...may I introduce you to Turbo "Bo" Glenn. ;) |
Oh, and I forgot to add...I'm sure you can all relate, as I sit here watching Bo race around poor Woody at breakneck speed, I realize, "Turbo" fits!! TURBO POWER!!!!! :) |
Hello and welcome to Yorkietalk. There are great people on here who sure love their Yorkie's and other pets too. we have Annabelle our 4 year old Schnauzer (all white) and her name came to us without any real special meaning to it other than it sounded pretty to us and girly. And we have our almost 9 month old Yorkie girl named Schatzie. Now her name has meaning and was researched long and hard. Let me tell you the story. Last spring we got Half-Pint, a 4 month old 1.2 pound little Yorkie girl. Sadly to say she passed away only having her a week due to complications from her vaccinations. We knew we wanted another Yorkie to love and then came Schatzie. Her name means Little Darling or Little Treasure in German. I researched for months to find the perfect name as I knew our next Yorkie after losing Half-Pint would be our "little treasure" to love. Half-Pint's name obviously came from her being so small... Glad you enjoy the site and we too love to hear everybody's stories, happy or sad ones and share insight. |
Hi! Welcome to Yorkie talk! :) I love it here - everyone is so wonderful! As far as names - Sandy came with her name, and we kept it as we didn't want to confuse her :) The verdict is still out on what we'll name our new baby when we get him/her - but I have a webpage just for our name ideas on our puppy page - :) What can I say? I'm excited! (you can vote on what name you like best too: http://aimeecentral.com/puppy/names.html ) Bo and Woody sound adorable - post some pictures soon so we can all Ooo and Ahhh over them! |
Hi & welcome to yorkie talk! Bo is a cute name, so is Woody. My little guy is almost 5 months and his name is Hercules. On our way home from picking him up, we were thinking about what to name him. He was 2 pounds at the time and extremely tiny. We were truly stumped on what to name him. My boyfriend suggested Hercules and it was pretty much over after that. We both thought that would be a perfect name! Whenever we are out with him and people ask about him, they always laugh when they hear his name - he's a very little package with a huge name! And that's him all the way. So that's our story! Good idea for a thread, since everyone here loves to talk about their babies and hear more about everyone else's too! :D Brandi & Hercules |
I love the name Hurcules! It is the perfect name for a little bundle - I think you guys hit the nail right on the head! |
Thanks for responding! Schatzie (little darling, how adorable!) and Sandy are very sweet names. Hercules is PERFECT!! Wish I'd thought of it! Let's all go to Aimee's web site and vote on her names! :) |
So sorry to hear about half-pint. I know it must have broken your heart. It doesn't take long to get attached to these sweet little guys. I'm sure you'll have better luck with your new baby! |
Oh thank you for your words on Half-Pint. She was soooo awesome, a little angel sent to give a message of love, a lesson to be learned about patience, trust, and openened up hearts to create a friendship with her breeder. I have never gotten over Half-Pint and I've stopped trying. She truly was an angel Yorkie, words could never describe what she had given me in such a short time. Her breeder and now a true friend of mine, created a short cd movie with music, poems, and almost a hundred pictures that were taken of Half-Pint between the two of us. Talk about a tear jerker! But it is so heart warming and amazing. A gift to me that is worth a million. It is so beautiful the precious lessons in life we learn from a very sad experience, I would never trade those memories of Half-Pint or give away what I have learned from a little dog ever in my life. I am so grateful to have known her and love her. I have never been affected by a dog as strongly as Half-Pint ever and feel blessed to have been kissed by an angel!! |
That is so sweet - what a wonderful friend you have found :) I'm very sorry to hear about Half-Pint...losing furbabies is so hard. I still cry when I think about my childhood pets that passed on and my cat, Milo. |
Oh I hate losing pets. I lost a great dane a few years back -- Ella was the love of my life! Losing pets is so painful, but I think it helps us grow into better caregivers to the next pets that come along. Luca Dean = Latin, source of light + my Dad's name, Dean. That's my yorkie name story. We chose the name before we chose him, and it suits him well -- he has been a source of light and delight after a hard holiday season for us -- we had two ailing family members this year. We are given these wonderful pets to enjoy, to pamper, and to make our lives and theirs more comfortable. It's so tough having to lose them, and afterwards the best medicine sometimes is to care for another one. |
Thanks, I'm glad you all like Hercules soo much. I'm sorry about Half Pint also. But at least you were able to develop such a good friend out of the breeder. And how sweet to get the memorial cd from her too! I'm very glad you have Schatzie now to bring you happiness and love!! Brandi & Hercules |
aimee - I voted on your website for a name. I'm excited for you on the arrival of your new puppy. I hope March hurries up fast for you!! :D Brandi & Hercules |
Wow! Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone! I still am not leaning towards any one name - I really like them all :) My new baby will probably end up with 13 names because I am so indecisive! |
Hi Lucynfred, Luca Dean is a really cool name. I saw it on here and wondered where it came from. Great idea! Anyone else have an interesting backstory on their baby's name?? |
Thanks. A lot of people think it's weird. The vet assistants weren't sure they were saying it right, and I get a lot of strange looks. I thought Luca was a sorta common name. Fiance insists on calling him "hey, dude," or "Dean" only if formally introducing him, because he didn't get to pick the name this time. Last time he picked names, I ended up with a Fred and a Hank. I wanted something more meaningful, and a few more syllables too!!! I'm still laughing and crying over Half Pint --such a wonderful name for one of our babies; I'm sorry he's gone. Aimee, I read your sight the other day! That's sucha great idea. We are trying to put a website up for all our fourpaws ... but there's so much to say! Where would we start?? |
My baby's registered name is Lindy Grace but I call her Gracie. My sister's name was Linda, and she passed away 11 months ago, and my grandma was Grace, and while she's been gone a long time, I always wanted to name a daughter after her. Sooooo...since I had a son instead, I knew I would someday get a little Yorkie girl named Gracie! And now I have her! |
Our lively 18 month old is, Tyava's Out of Oz, Toto. My husband looked for months to find exactly what we wanted. Actually, I didn't want another pet after we lost our Toy Poodle, Nicole about 7 years ago. Had her for 13 years and I thought I would die when we lost her and swore never to get attached to another pet! Since I wasn't at all interested, I described what I wanted if I had one ... thinking he would never find it! So Patrick is the one who began the "Yorkie Quest"! He searched for several months and by that time we knew if we ever found it, we would have a Yorkie named Toto! We are in so many different states [we work for gas/oil companies] there are actually times we forget where we are and I am constantly saying "We aren't in Kansas anymore, Toto!" :) Tyava, of course, is the kennel name. We became so unbelievably attached to her in about five minutes after we first held her! We had paid to reserve "pick of the litter" and never even looked at the others! She is purebred and yes, we paid a great deal for her and I believe she could have done well in the show ring ... but, we wanted a pet and she is absolutely the sweetest little girl we could've imagined! Well ... actually she is a "spoiled brat" ... but in a good way!!! Our lives revolve around her ... we quickly became Yorkieholics!! ;) |
Hey! Love "Gracie" and "Toto" and the stories you both shared. I knew people always put a lot of thought into naming pets so I hoped this would be an interesting thread. Those names are both adorable! Thanks for the input and all the wisdom you provide on this forum. ;) |
Before we got my baby, me and my boyfriend tossed around a few names. I always wanted a sweet, little thing that i could snuggle up with and that would be a lap dog since all my previous dogs were BIG!! I thought of the name "Dolce" and he liked it too. When I went to pick her up with my sister the whole car ride home i was like "does she look like a Dolce?" Well, we sat in traffic for and hour and a half...she was 8 weeks old....and she was as sweet and cuddly as could be the whole time. I knew she had to be called "Dolce" because that means "sweet" in Italian....had to stay true to my heritage!!! "La Dolce Vita!!!" Because how could life be any sweeter when you have a Yorkie??? :D |
AMEN, Dolce's Mom!! What a sweet and wonderfully creative name you chose! I think it fits her! :) |
:D Thanks so much!!! Although sometimes I think I should have named her "Scutch" (sounds like Butch) because she is a little pain in the you know what sometimes...my Italian grandmother used to call us grandkids that all the time, oh and a few other names in Italian that I'll uh, ahem, leave out here...but she is my little Dolce and that fits her MOST of the time!! lol |
