WOW!! This is a great thread! I have read it from start to finish. You guys and all the clever ideas!! Thanks from all of us newbie yorkie owners!! |
I feel like I have a newborn baby. She wakes up with this wad of energy at 3:30 EVERY morning. I'm a schoolteacher so needless to say, I'm not thrilled with playing "Chase the Sock" at the wee hours of the morning. We are taking little walks at night. But right now, she's conked out on my leg. I couldn't keep her awake if I tried, and i have. In 45 minutes she'll be up and rarin' to go again! I would say "Sleepless in Seattle" but I live in Mississippi. So we'll stick with just "Sleepless." |

Lol, it is like having a newborn baby, but that's why many of us love Yorkies so much. You'll get more rest in the toddler years. Maybe if someone has a tip on waking up a sleepy puppy for exercise. I can just picture you playing "Chase the Sock" at 3:30 AM, and I'm so glad Joey is two. |
I just re-read my post. It was kinda funny wasn't it. Well...she's zooming around my living room as we speak. I'm gonna try to go to sleep soon. Thanks for the support! |

I'm just bumping this for new members. |
My tip is more general: Most issues work out given enough time. Don't worry. Best thread ever:D |

Wow, this thread is great! I read through the whole thing before I realized it is 2 years old. Not that it matters, the tips are still helpful. The best tip I got was from my trainer at Petsmart. He suggested a squirt bottle to spray water at Roxie when she is misbehaving. Works like a charm. When she barks at the vacuum, she gets a spritz. When she freaks out over us cleaning the hamster cage, she gets a spritz. When she is barking uncontrollably, she gets a spritz. She hates it, and most times all I have to do is pick up the squirt bottle and she runs away. :p |

I haven't read through all 6 pages yet (or whatever...) but the best tip I have I discovered by accident while flying with Sugar. She was a bit out of sorts in her carrier and was hungry/thirsty. I couldn't unzip the bag or she would escape  so I took out the syringe I had for her benadryl if she needed it (she didn't :D) and filled it from my bottle of water. I was able to squirt it slowly through the mesh in her carrier and she happily lapped it up  :p I now never leave home without one in her bag! |
I always tip my Service Advisor and Technician periodically! Costs a little, but saves a lot! |
Tips I've Learned: Teeth Clean time: both my dogs are well aware that if they tolerate me brushing their teeth at the very end they get dental chews as a "treat" and it helps clean their teeth too. Like others have mentioned I will put them on their backs to do certain things they need done like nail trims and clothing changes and exploring things that need exploring. I lay them across the gap on my legs and belly rub like crazy. |
Thanks for bumping this up I have learned a lot of great tips. Well I just learned this today and I guess it could be considered a tip. I was making Buster's breakfast when I head a tearing sound. Since I know he gets into everything I went to investigate. Well he had found my roommates used, luckily, heat patch for sore muscles. Well I did not know if Buster had swallowed any of the pellets are there were some on the floor so I called the ASPCA Poison Hotline. They asked if he was microchipped and I said yes and then they asked if he was registered with Home Again which he was not. "For HomeAgain members who have the full service annual membership, there is no charge for use of the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline. If your pet does not have a HomeAgain full service annual membership, you may be charged $60 for this call." Well since Buster is a vacuum and is always picking up things I am definitely going to register him. He is okay but it was quite an interesting start to my day! |

Bee is always cold, especially this time of year here where we live. So, I always put her blankie in the dryer to warm it for her, but I bet the microwave works so much better & I cant put her towel & sweaters in there too. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!! Today, we had an issue UGH & while I was waiting for "HER" blankie & sweater to get out of the dyer so they were warm, I put her warmest sweater on(ITS UGLY BUT WARM) & wrapped her in her "second blankie" & we had to sit infront of the space heater for 30 minutes waiting for those. UGH, the dryer takes forever. THANKS |
I was worried about my little ones and the stairs. They loved to look through the posts of the bannister to see what was going on downstairs, particularly when they thought I would be coming in the front door or if I went downstairs to get something. I have two landings, and I was always worried with them. We were redoing our bannister and had asked to have additional posts so that they could be paced a little closer to each other. However, we were still worried about them falling through, so we had pieces of plexiglass cut that ran the entire length of both landings that we placed across the posts. The weight of the plexi allowed us to just place it there without having to screw it into the posts, and it worked great. It doesn't look bad, and it's high enough that they definitely can't fall through. They were able to see what was going on downstairs because the plexi is clear, so they didn't try to jump on the plexiglass. It gave us such peace of mind. |

When Fido doesn't wanna eat I act like I'm SOOO excited! (then he gets excited too) and then pour water over the food, and he eats it like a horse :) I use school scissors to cut the hair on the paws, tail, and I trim the mustache with it sometimes, it works fine :) When im putting a pony tail in Fido, I take something that is small, and long, and thin but hard, and stretch the hair a bit with it, then the ponytail doesn't hurt him. |
Still Learning... I am still learning, as my Tucker is only 14 months. But I wanted to say Thanks to all for the wonderful tips. I already know some that will be very helpful now, and lots for the future! Thanks to all! Carrie & Tucker:aimeeyork |
This one is for taking pills or medication. Instead of just trying to shove the pill in their throats like the vet does, I'll coat it in a tiny bit of butter or yogurt. They gobble it right up because they think it is a treat! I got the idea from reading about dog food companies and how they spray fat on otherwise unappealing kibbles. I do the same for syringe tips. It works like a charm and it's sooooo much cheaper than the pill pockets!! |
I'm bumping this thread for our newbies, please add any favorite tips you have. My new favorite tip is to always have a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide on hand. Label it with the amount needed to cause vomiting in your dog. When you are in a hurry, you might not be able to remember the amount you need. WARNING: You don't always want to cause vomiting, learn when you want to cause it and when you don't. You should never induce your pup to vomit, if it ate or drank corrosive substances, like gasoline that burn the throat. Also, solid objects, like a penny, could cause choking if you induce vomiting. Inducing vomiting is necessary if your dog ate something poisonous. Study the poisons list and try to keep all poisons away from your dog and please teach your dog the "Drop it" command. Quote:

TIPs 1. a soft child's tooth brush is good for brushing around eyes. 2.Carry an extra leash, paper towels, wet wipes, bottle of water, a small blanket, in addition to your regular first aid kit in the car. 3.Have your Yorkie micro chipped. Keep that number, a recent picture of them, and a copy of their shot records, and who to call in case of an accident, in a zip lock bag in the car. This is so useful in an emergency. I have this in my glove box. 4. Put DOG INSIDE sign, by each door. Not only does this discourage burglars, it tells fire rescue, police etc that a pet is inside. 5. Best tip of all : When in doubt go to the Vet, better safe ,than too late. |
