| New Member first post Hello, This is my first time posting a comment. My puppy is 7 months old and his name is Debo. I have been reading every book that I can get my hands on, but I have one major issue -- grooming. I brush and comb him daily (and wash him as needed) to get him use to any groomer, however he still nips at me as well as a couple of groomers (they said he needed a valium). What am I doing wrong. Also, whenever I get him combed and brushed he looks nice for 3 minutes and then would roll on the ground and he's back to looking scruffy again. I think he likes that wild look. |

Keep combing and brushing him....eventually he will realize...you ARE gonna do groom him. Mine used to bite at the brush and she prefers the wild look herself. She loves to rub her face in blankets and pillows....mussing up her hair.

| Mine all do the same thing as far as liking the "wild look". They hate to be bathed and groomed and I end up wetter than they do trying to keep them from jumping out of the sink and breaking their little necks but the only time they nip me is when I pull their hair. Welcome to YT. We love pictures around here. BTW, we do have a forum especially for Grooming. You might find some answers there. |

| Hello, Neighbor, I'm from Rome -- Welcome to YorkieTalk! At seven months your little guy is still a silly pup. Keep grooming him regularly -- if possible groom in short sessions and be sure to use plenty of praise. In time he will learn to be still and accept a full grooming without complaint. |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Yep, I agree about keep grooming them just a little at a time. Both of mine when they were younger would fight me like crazy when I tried to brush/comb their hair. But little by little, over time, and with age, they became used to it and will sit very nicely now whenever I groom them. I actually think they kind of like it. I can even give them amatuer haircuts now too. Oh, and by the way.......Welcome to YT!

| Welcome to you and Debo to Yorkie Talk, you will love it here. Like Sugar's Mom said we have lots of forums here and the Grooming forum is loaded with help. Since Debo is only seven months old I'm sure he is in the wiggly stage and wants to move alot. I would do many short sessions a day and try hard if you find a mat to work it out without hurting him. I think if he were mine I would try to work with him until he is doing better before I would bring him back to the groomer if she wants Debo on valium. I'm not a groomer but groom my own dog and from what I have seen of most groomers they can handle dogs without valium but I must admit a young puppy is a handful.

| Welcome to YT. I would do many short sessions also. Talk with him and tell him good boy. Then when you are done tell him Good boy and give him a treat. This is what worked for Dieter. He now love to be groomed and will even go get his brush.

| Hi and Welcome!! I always comb Teddi on the bathroom counter. She didn't like it at first but now she knows the routine and when I put her up there she lays down waiting to be brushed...I think it is actually relaxing to her now.

| I let mine smell the brush and/or comb I'm going to use before I put it on them, and then I brush very slowly. I keep treats in my pocket, and if their being good I'll give them a little treat. It just takes time and patience.

| sounds as if Debo just needs to get used to the grooming process more ... use a soft brush before using the wire thingy .... give him a toy to play with while you do this and always give him a "good boy" and a treat when he does behave ... .... |
