Is My Puppy a Fraud? Here's a little background. We buoght our daughter a "Yorkie" for her birthday. When we went to pick Sassy up- I was shocked that she did not look like a typical yorkie. When I questioned the breeder- she showed me pictures of the daddy that looked almost exactly like Sassy. She had both mom and dad on site and they are very obviously Yorkies. She explained to me that the dad was very very slow in getting his hair, but she assured me that Sassy is indeed a Yorkie. My daughter had by this time fell in love with her- she is a sweet little thing. Now honestly- at this point- we are keeping her and we love her. But I am frustrated to think that she may never have the "yorkie look" that we wanted so badly. Please tell me what you think. I have seen posts on here about "red-legged" yorkies- could this maybe be what she is? If someone can tell me how to post pictures here- I have several to post. Thanks, Crystal |

Crystal, do you have any pictures of her that you can post? |
I'll be nice to see your pup, and I'm glad you decided to keep it. |
OK- I cannot figure out how to do photos. I tried uploading them to my post and I cannot. Then I have tried creating a member gallery and I can only manage to get one picture uploaded. Help!! Crystal |

3 Attachment(s) OK- Let me try this again- Here are some pictures I have put on Photobucket Edited to add- she is 16 weeks old and weighs just under 5 pounds. Her mom weighed 10 pounds and Dad weighed 6 pounds. |
I am no yorkie expert but if I had to quess I would say that she if not a fullbreed yorkie. She is adorable though. I love her ears! |
I don't think she's a yorkie but she sure is cute. The only thing that would worry me is if you spent a lot of money for her. Were there any other dogs besides the yorkies on the premises? Maybe the breeder had an oopsie? Regardless, she is adorable- enjoy her and welcome to YT!:) |
I don't think she's a Yorkie, though she is really cute. I just wish these BYBs would stop lying to people. They know the owner is going to fall in love with their puppy regardless, so they lie. That's just so not nice IMHO!! I hope you enjoy your puppy though, she's a sweetie. Welcome! :) |
To me it does not look like a full Yorkie... But I am not an expert... If you look at me picture on the right, she is about 17 weeks! She already has long hair that I can comb and put a bow on top of her hair... I hope you didn't pay the full price for her... She is cute though :) |
It doesnt matter if how much you paid for her! you didnt know. I honestly think she is mixed. Do you and your breeder have a contract? If you did want your money back im sure you could sue her but yall would have to do DNA testing not sure if you want to go through all of that or if it even matters. Just a option. she is still very cute tho. may i ask where her breeder lives? |
Ugh- this is what I was afraid of! I keep trying to convince myself that she will turn into a yorkie any day, lol. The people that I bought her from were very, very nice. There were 5 puppies total in the litter. She actually had a pictue of the litter and Sassy was the only one that did not look like a typical yorkie. The mom and dad were the only two dogs at the house. Sassy was the only puppy left when we got there. I guess it is my fault for believing them. I saw the picture she was saying was the dad as a puppy, and I wanted to believe it. I even called back a few days later and told her that people just were not believing she was a yorkie and she was so emphatic that she really was a Yorkie. Like I said- it is no matter- my kiddos love her now- but truthfully- I really longed for a true Yorkie. Does anyone think she has any Yorkie in her at all? I guess it is true that Papers really don't mean anything! Crystal |
I have to agree, he looks like a mix...sorry if you where deceived...I hope things work out for you..... |
You are correct about papers not meaning a thing. Sure looks like some chihuahua in her. There are so many dishonest people in the world, it is disheartening!!! I can feel your frustration. Did you pay alot for her?? |
No- I did not pay much for her at all. That should have been my first clue. However- I was told that since she was the last one, they were just trying to find her a home. I am new to the Yorkie world, we have a Sheltie. I can only blame myself for being so naive. Crystal |

Sassy sure is a cutie!!! :) But she looks like a mix for sure. She looks like she's mixed with Chihuahua or Rat Terrier... |
She is such a doll! I hope you will continue to post with Sassy here on YT. I would love to see more pictures of her cuteness :) Welcome! |
Okay I hope no body attacks me on this one lol if you look at her bone structure the way her ears ar it looks all yorkie to me its funny that I came across this thread right after coco's bath because when she is wet she has the same look at the picture I have seen a couple threads on here about redlegs so your pup might very well be that but there are some ppl on here that say they don't exist either or I'm thinking its something in the genes that has made your puppy not have super long hair. Because chi have a very diff bone struture but I'm going to say redleg!!! Maybe in a few months her hair will start to grow |
She "could" be full blooded. If you take a not so nice pair and breed them..then take that pup to a not so nice mate and so on and so forth you can get this look. She doesn't look full blooded to me, but she could be. You could always DNA her to see for sure. |
i beleive she is mixed, but she is very cute:) Its just not right how people can be so dishonest:mad: I hope you keep her and wish you the best:) |
So cute. I would think that at 16 weeks she would still have the typical yorkie puppy coloration of black and tan. It is possible that somewhere in her line their was an oops breeding that the breeder does not know about. Also the male you show could be the father of the other puppies but not this own because of an oops breeding with a neighborhood dog. It could have. |
Also if you look at the body structure its very diff than a chi it looks yorkie to me I don't want to sound mean but I think that the breeder didn't do a lot of history on her dogs before breeding and what her lines are like I think it is a poorly bread pup or a redleg with that gene that makes them look like that |
She's so cute! If she is yorkie its a small %, looks more like a terrier mix to me. |
Crystal, I'm afraid you got burnt hon..She most likely has some yorkie in her, but, like someone else said there are a lot of breeders that lie to make a buck..and a dog can get pregnant by more than one male dog..I bought a pom one time, when I went to show it to my friend that has always had poms, she said(her words exactly), what the hell is that?? I could have cried, so I have been taken before too..it's really sad that people do this..they figure you pay for them, and fall in love with the dog and won't do anything..If you paid a lot for this puppy, then you need to get some of your money back, if they won't give you some back, you could do a dna testing, and then if it shows it's not 100% yorkie, I would take them to small claims court.. |
puppy We have had a number of threads lately about the questionability of recently purchased "Yorkie" pups...if any of these pups I have seen come with AKC papers, then all need to report the breeders to AKC for DNA testing...these are not purebred dogs and the parents should be S/N..if they are non-papered, Apri, CKC, ACA, then there is no recourse...enjoy then as pets... |
Well whatever she is she's a cutie. If she is healthy your ahead of the game. Don't feel bad because your not the only one on this board who has not been fully educated in the world of Yorkies. I'm right there with you. I educated myself very well, I thought before buying Bud. No where in the books did it mention BYB, Pet stores or Teapots, the larger Yorkie. I knew what to look for in a pup but the above. Thank heavens I did get a full blooded Yorkie just more of him. I deliberately picked him out because he was bigger. Who knew he would get to be 15lbs.\ He's a love and healthy, healthy, healthy so I feel blessed. Enjoy her. It was just ment to be. |
Well, I am not an expert, but I can tell you that Kiwi had a half sister who looked a lot like your little baby. When I went to pick Kiwi (who is a purebred), I saw one that looked almost exactly like yours. The breeder said she was Kiwi's half sister and didn't have the yorkie "look" although she was purebred. She said every once in awhile a yorkie comes along that doesn't get the correct coloring and hair texture. So I think yours could be a purebred, but just not have the correct coloring. She sure is cute, though! |
I am just sick over this. I know it is my fault for walking out of that door if I had any suspicions. But of course- you see a puppy, any puppy- and your kids are saying- "Please Mom!". Honestly- Sassy is a sweet puppy and none of this is her fault. It is just that if I had wanted a mix breed puppy I could probably have gotten one for free. For those asking- I only paid $200 for her. I realize that is a steal- but honestly-I could have gotten a Non-yorkie for free- so really 200 is steep for what I got. A friend got a male yorkie the same week I got Sassy- and he is this adorable ball of fur. We had discussed breeding our two Yorkies, but of course- since she is the only one that has a Yorkie, that is out of the question. I am at a loss on what to do. I tried calling the breeder back a few days after we got Sassy- she just kept assuring me that the hair will come. She gave me some story about one of the puppies in the dads litter was exactly the same way and so was the dad. Truthfully- it is not even completely about the money- it is about that my family wanted a Yorkie. Now we are not even sure what we ended up with. Crystal |
