| Which Vet? I was wondering if anybody has any advice on how to find a good vet? What are some things to look for or avoid? I emailed a couple of Vets in my area and asked them if they use Lepto in their puppy shots and adult boosters (which I've read is not recommended). I also asked them what kind of anesthesia they use when performing surgical procedures on small breed dogs. Out of the following responses, which vet would you think is better and which one would you choose? Thanks in advance Vet #1: "Kingsdale would be happy to provide veterinary care to your new family additions. In our area there have been cases of Lepto so as a result we do vaccinate puppies and adults. We started this protocol 6 years ago will excellent success. Surgery patients are evaluated with a physical examination, pre-operative blood work and placed on iv fluids during surgery. Anesthesia protocols are premedication with hydromorphone/acepromazine/glycopyrolate, induction with either valium/ketamine or propofol iv and maintained on isoflurane. All patients are monitor with a pulse oximeter (blood oxygen levels and pulse), and apnea-alert (respiratory rate) as well as a registered veterinary technician with 15+years of experience. We have a surgical laser unit with cauterizes as it incises blood vessels and nerves resulting in significantly less blood loss and less post-op pain." Vet #2: "Thank you for contacting Chicopee Hills Animal Hospital. As a general response, yes, we do use a Leptospirosis vaccination. However, as with all vaccinations we treat pets as individuals so there will be situations where we do not recommend a given vaccination. Our recommendations are based on the pet's lifestyle, risk factors, history of vaccination reactions, and breed just to name a few. I am assuming by your question that you have a concern with the Leptospirosis vaccination. Certainly, part of the consultation process is to discuss these issues and address any questions you may have. Unfortunately, the question regarding anaethetic agents is not amenable to a brief email response. We use a variety of anaesthetic agents which are selected on a case by case basis. We can also discuss this issue more specifically once we are familiar with your pets and their unique situation." |

| I think that vet 2 should have atleast told you that they maintain anesthesia with iso or sevo. They don't seem like they want to give answers. The part about whether they use the Lepto is a good question but Ellie's vet office uses it and I wouldn't change because of it. Ellie got the vaccine and went into shock so I will specify everytime with any dog that they are not to get that one. The most important thing is the vet's knowledge and personality in my opinion. I really like Ellie's vet and we are there so much that the vet definately listens to me, so I think you have to meet them.

| Yeah I had wished they could've answered my question about the anesthesia, but I liked how they mention that their recommendations are based on each pet's specific needs. But you're right, I think I'll try to go visit them. Quote:

| I would definetly go for a consultation with each of them. See which one is willing to spend the most time with you to answer all your questions. I'd write them all down ahead of time so you don't forget them. You can also see if they specialize in small breeds.

| I second scheduling a consultation with both. You can discuss your concerns with Lepto with the first in person to see if they are flexible. I've always found my vets through a recommendation by a friend or neighbor. Good luck and yay for you doing your homework!

| My first impression on these two vets is not favorable.... Choosing a vet is much like choosing your own physician....Your comfort zone....do they make you feel like an idiot when you ask questions, or do they listen to you. As in your own medical care, you must take an active part in your pet's medical care. Leptos and Corona virus comes in various strains and the vaccination, based on the strain, only provides immunities for a short period of time....6 months or less.... You asked about general anesthesia.....they gave you a vague generalized statement..... I would add to my list of inquiries, if they are a toy breed specialists, how many yorkshire terriers are in their list of clientele. Do visit their facility....as for a tour......schedule an appointment with the vet, so that you may sit down face to face....have your list of questions.
