Default I'm on the verge of crying! so frustrated...

i'm so exhausted... i got my puppy to keep me company for college and i've been walking him for about 20-30 min a day. he's a CRAZY biter... my hands look terrible! and he gets so aggressive with all the barking and biting. whenever i use any of the tips, like holding him on his back or spraying him with a squirt bottle, he just gets even more angry!! i'm in the middle of my midterms and i'm getting no sleep tonight since he's constantly jumping off the bed and won't let me get him back on (playing chase)...
please tell me its just a phase... he's about 6 months old and not neutered yet. anyone can relate?

Yorkies have a lot of energy. I say he's still young and in that puppy phase, he may grow out of it. My male Teddy is 1 yr, 3 months and sometimes still gets very hyper and will run back and forth very fast, and bite at my hands but playfully. I'm sure yours is just playing. Maybe just ignore him and see if he stops.

What about getting another Yorkie for a play pal? Does that help? I see a lot of people on here have more than one little pup.

Animal Smiley 036 Attention

I think he want to play with you. He is doing this to get your attention. Males are a companion dog. They need much attention, more than a little girl needs. They say little boys don't like being left alone. It is also said that they do need a buddy to play with. So getting another pup for him to play with is a good idea

Well first of all I dont think that you should get another puppy, I mean you are finding it very diffucult already with the 1 you already have. cOuld you imagine having 2 unruly puppys. First of all my first yorkie was 6mts when I got her, when I tried to pet her, she constantly bit my hands, this was also very fustrating for me also, but I constantly pulled my hands away and kept repeating a strong NO. Beleive me it took a while, but she soon got the message. She is now an adorable and affectionate girl. Also my 7mt old Betty did the same, now she very rarly does this. I used the same method as I did with Missy. Look maybe if you have the time you should bring him to puppy classes, this will help you a great deal, I think. Also beleive me yorkie puppys are so full of life and energy, they can be hard work. And beleive it or not, they tend to calm down when they reach adulthood.
Hopefully you will get a lot of help here, and try not to worry. YOu can always come back here and ask whatever you like. Thats what we are here for.

You poor thing. Sounds like you've got a handful. Hang in there, and it will get better as he ages. Guaranteed. Here's a couple things to try:

* Increase the exercise. I realize you don't have much time, especially right now, but if you could do two 20-30 minute walks or runs a day, it will help. If you can find another dog to play with in a fenced yard on occasion, that will help even more. They can wear each other out.

* Chew toys. Get something, or several things, that he likes to chew on. Bully sticks are great. Nylabones. Kongs.

* Crate train. This may be tough at first, but read up on crate training if you haven't already done that. If you can get him comfortable in his crate, then you can get some time for yourself and your exams.

Good luck. And remember. Reward good behavior. Ignore bad behavior.

ha ha, I believe in CORRECTING bad behaviour and encouraging good myself.

This isn't just "a phase" most likely. While our Yorkies are terriers, don't forget this, this behaviour that he's displaying while not only completely unacceptable may only get worse if let to go on it's own and hope that through maturity it'll simply fade away. I'm here to tell you it won't. Period. Honestly. Yeah, he might get better either because you're avoiding certain behaviours around him because you know they might trigger his excitement or whatever you've labeled the cause as, but it's still there. And rather than always being guarded or changing your behaviour to avoid a nasty one of his, I'd just correct it. Get it done and over w/ and then move on to enjoying your little guy!

The difficulty here is not being able to see your little guy in person. When it comes to aggression, it's really hard to give you a step by step guide on what to do without seeing just exactly *what* his issues are and what you as a handler may be doing inadvertantly to otherwise encourage these issues.

If you'd like, please e-mail me and I'll ask some questions and based on those answers, I can offer you suggestions/advice.

Good luck w/ your testing!

ps, it should go w/o saying, in your situation...do NOT get another puppy at this point in time as a utensil to "fix" the negative behaviour of your current little guy. You'd just be asking for trouble if you did. In some scenarios, this isn't such a bad idea. Yours doesn't warrant such a thing and could actually be quite detrimental to your situation.

The biting is NOT a phase, it will not go away and it will not get better unless you do something about it now.
Spraying him with a water bottle, holding him down, or holding his mouth shut briefly will only make him angry and will make things worse.

You have to tell him in his language that the biting is not acceptable.
When he bites you, yell "yipe" in a high pitch voice. You want to imitate what a puppy that yelps sounds like. After yelping move away from him for a minute and ignore him. Do this EVERY time he bites you, even if it doesn't hurt much.
This will teach him that if he wants to play with you, he has to be gentle.

Have you ever watched a group of puppies play. When one is playing too rough the other will yelp causing the first puppy to back off. This is the same concept with puppies and humans, you are just speaking in his language.

It might sound goofy to yelp like a puppy but it is one of the most successful ways of stopping the bite. It teaches him bite control, every dog should learn this.

As for his barking you need to figure out what is triggering his barking. Usually sound control is one of the best methods for stopping excessive barking.

If you need any help or ideas, feel free to pm me.

Good luck and enjoy your little guy.

I am in college as well so I know the stressed out feeling. Jack loves to chew and bite fingers too and here are a few things that have worked for me, and I've tried tons! If he is not being too aggressive with the chewing but is chewing my fingers, I give him a toy or a bone to chew on. This may sound a little silly but whenever he gets too aggressive with the finger chewing (i.e. growling when i move my hand or attempting to shake my hand between his teeth) I hold him on his back, get in his face and growl. I have tried everything but this is the only thing that has really worked with him because it sends a clear message, I am bigger than you and I get angry when you do that. Also, dogs need attention so give him some! I've noticed the more time I spend with him, the less he misbehaves. Also, going for walks and getting plenty of exercise really helps get out some of the puppy energy.

Excellent advice.

I also agree that getting another one isn't a good idea. You'd most likely just end up with two unruly dogs.

He is just a puppy, trust me, it will get better! When he gets off the bed just ignore him as long as you are sure he can't get into anything. Vinnie does the same, sometimes he just like to sleep under the bed!!!

Let me tell you, when we got Boobah, she was a terror of a terrier! I had circles under my eyes from not sleeping, getting up in the middle of the night to answer her cries, etc. Now she is 7 mos. old and tomorrow she is getting spaded. But all it takes is patience, there are all kinds of people that wish they could have a yorkie.
I also was at the point of either giving her away or selling her. But as time went by, she calmed down a bit. And just looking in her eyes gave me all the more to keep her. So just hang in there! It'll be alright.

My Cali went thriugh that phase for a couple of months from about 6 months to 8 months. I honestly thought she was possessed and I have had 4 dogs prior to her and never had that problem. SHe would bite me and when I told her no she would lunge at me and bite harder, I would stop playing with her and if that didn't stop her I put her in her playpen. SHe turned into the sweetest, most laid back little girl Ihave ever had. SO try and hang in there it does get better.

Hi! I myself have a 6 month old puppy that loves to bite but ever since we started taking him to the dog park on a daily basis it has reduced. Also he has stoped teething. We got to a point were he was biting everything in site but then he was loosing his puppy teeth. I would find them all over the place. So he may be going through that stage. But I find that the dog park has done him good as I live in an apartment and do not have a fenced backyard for him to run in. At the park he is able to run around with other dogs and wear himself out. I started in the small dog section but he would be the only one most of the time so we have moved to the bigger dog section and he runs after the bigger dogs. It has also helped in socializing him with other dogs. I myself live in houston and there are a lot of dog parks that you can go to. And as he plays with other dogs, you can study for your classes. This has helped us greatly as for the moment we can't get another dog; although that is my goal. We take him at least 5 days a week. Hope this may be of help to you.
