So we picked up the Yorkie today, and... So far, maybe this isn't what I was looking for. :( First off, he doesn't just have a puppy cut, his hair is flat out SHORT. He's bigger than I thought he'd be. I need to weigh him soon. He just seems bigger than what she said (which was 6 lbs). He has very long legs for a Yorkie. It makes him look a bit gangly, and I don't find that to be flattering. I keep saying I have to wonder if he's a mix, but my significant other is convinced he's purebred. If he's purebred, he's one hell of a tall Yorkie, and he's going to be somewhat big I'd bet. His personality is a little different than I wanted, too. He spends most of his time running away from us and never staying still. Maybe our Yorkie we have had for a while is a rarity, but he isn't a complete ball of energy like that, and even when he is he doesn't try to completely avoid us. She said he was "on the road" to being housebroken, but crapped in the house twice even though we took him out. That's frustrating. Our cats already dislike him because of his energy and general nature, and I really hate to see that. I feel that all members of this household, animal and human, need to get along perfectly. It's always been great with us 2, the cats and our furbaby...everybody has gotten along really well. Yeah, it's only one day, but I can foresee problems on the horizon between the cats and this one, and if it comes to choosing I'd have to keep the kitties because they were here first. I suppose I just have to be honest about the situation, and I am just a little letdown. I tried fooling myself for a while into thinking I liked how he looked and his personality was great for this house, but reality sinks in fast for me. :( |
I would give it some time, hes probably scared and confused and needs to adjust |
Give it a day or two. I am sure he will warm up. He is prob not used to his surrounding . My cats also hate my Roxy |
It's day one. :) I'm sure it'll all work out with time. |
Maybe the reason he runs away from you is because he doesn't know you yet and he is a little scared, and he probably senses that you don't like him. I hope things work out for you and him. |
How old is your new yorkie? He might turn out to be a beauty when his hair grows. Also what is his name ? |
It hasn't even been 24 hours yet. Give him some time to get used to the house, the cats you and your routine. Everyone deserves a fair chance. |
Can we see some pictures???? |
Maybe getting another Yorkie isn't a good idea for you right now (only you would know that though). He is probably running away because he is scared. If he keeps doing it he is just being a puppy. His hair will grow out and you can have it how you like it. Does it really matter if his legs are long? I bet he has four cute ones. As for chasing the cats, Ellie chases cats too (thank God we don't have any). Some Yorkies will do that. They were bred to hunt/kill vermin. Cats are small and Yorkies instincts probably just take over. |
Do you have the option of returning him to the breeder (or whoever you got him from) if it's not working out? If the person you got him from will let you, I'd give it a week and see how it goes and if it's not working out, then it's not working out. If you don't like the way he looks, that's probably not going to change too much since he is an older puppy...although a dog can look SO much different depending on if they have long or short hair. I know you prefer the long hair, as do I, and I understand looks being important because honestly, they are to me too (to a point anyway). Do you think he'll look prettier once his hair grows out? Just don't keep him too long and then decide you want to rehome him...if it's not working out, rehome him before he gets attached to you. |
He's probably just scared. He doesn't know you yet. You need to give him a chance. But I guess if you really don't want him then ask the breeder if you can give him back. |
Did you see pictures of him before you went to go get him? Maybe that is why the other people only had him for 2 weeks, the pup wasnt potty trained and is hyper. |
We didn't buy him from a breeder, actually. The person who we bought him from only had him for 2 weeks because she figured out she didn't have the time for him like he needed. So she gave him up for that reason for a good price. We can't return him to her for that reason....she can't really care for him. Like others have said, it's only been a day and things could change. It just doesn't really FEEL good so far though. I've never had a bad experience with the previous 2 Yorkies I have had (including the one we tragically lost), so it's just a "gut" feeling right now. We'll see though. It takes a couple of weeks I'd say before a definite determination can be made. I'll try to get pics up soon. He just appears to be a little too gangly and big for a Yorkie. You all are the experts though, so you can see. |
I believe deep inside my heart that you gave up b4 you tried!!! Day one he deserves a chance but most likely won't get it because he is not pleasing you with the way he looks...Maybe you should consider, Don't show him that he is not wanted that will be so harsh specially for him since he is adjusting to a new athmosphere:animal-pa |

I keep trying to picture him with a longer coat, and it just seems kind of tough for me to do. His legs are just so long that I try to think about whether or not it'd make him appear to be shorter or not by covering up some of his legs. |
