Yorkie Talk Quilt I wonder if anyone would be interested in a Quilt from Yorkie Talk members? I was thinking that we could each make a Quilt Block then send it to the next member and they add a block and send it on to the next and on and on. Maybe someone has a quilting machine and they would take it and quilt it at the end of the line or we could have a meet up and hand quilt it all together. Then we could sell it and donate the proceeds to a Yorkie Rescue. It could all be pictures of our yorkies for the quilt block? What do you think? And if anyone knows more about what size block and how to put it all together, please help with that sort of advice too. |
I think that would be awesome. Of course, I don't sew, but I'd buy a raffle ticket to win it! |
I have no ideal even how to put a picture on a quilt I would need help. But I would join in... the procces and buy a ticket also... |
I helped do something similar once for a church member who was moving. Different members of the church each made a square symbolizing something this couple was fond of. At the end, 5 of us met at the church to put the squares together, then another member took it to be quilted. (Each square was 10 X 10. I'd love to help do this, the only thing is I don't know how to put a pic of my yorkies on a square. What if each square symbolized something about YT yorkies - for example - a soccer ball on a square, an outline of a yorkie appliqued on a square, etc.? Do you think that'd work? |
OK - I'm sewing challenged but a professional YT shopper..hehehe...I would most definitely buy a raffle ticket....or two...or three......lol. Great idea - I hope this works out. :D |

I sew, but am not a quilter. Avery makes iron-on T-Shirt Transfers available at Office Depot. I have used them to put pictures on sweatshirts. Would it work for a quilt?? I would suggest using a 12" block. |
Thats awsome idea!!!! I know a lady that I work with that can do anything to a quilt!! Of coarse me, I can't sew. |
Sounds like a great idea! I'm not much of a sewer though :( I would love to learn how to do a quilt! |
I'm in let me know:D Great idea |
I'm in! I'll keep checking for updates. I can help out with those who don't sew or just need help putting a square together. I'm not a quilter though so I can't help there. Anyway... let me know if I can help. |

Can you ask her for some advice on how to go about putting pix on and putting it together if we can't find anyone else? I know the malls usually have a place you can get photographed and put your pix on a t-shirt, but don't know about just putting on a quilt block. How would we go about a fundraiser on here? Can ADMIN collect the money and have the tickets? I did not think of some of these complicated things. Any ideas anyone? Also, wouldn't we need a certain color scheme? |
I love this idea! :) How creative. :D |
I would love to make a sqaure or two. I have quilted before and I would be willing to help someone out if they needed it. Some of the basics are easy if you know your sewing machine and have the right cutting tools. But I think that we really do need some sort of color ideas. Like a couple main colors that go together and then we can have examples on here and we can go and get whatever we need. Also I am for making a quilt 10'' square and sending it to one place. The person twords the end of the quilt will be paying a ton for shipping by the end of the quilt top. They can get heavy after a while. Plus are we wanting to make a king, queen or a lap quilt to auction off? That will let us know how many squares to make. |
The one I helped put together was 5 squares across and 7 squares long. It had 3 inch strips between each square and a 7 inch border all way around. The strips, border, and backing were all from the same fabric. The last square was embroidered with the name of the church and the date it was completed. I really want to help with this project, but I also want to be able to buy tickets to win it:) |
I'm willing to make a quilt block. It would be fun. |
Count me in!! I would LOVE to make a square. :) |
 Count me in (to buy a whole lot of tix, not for the quilting!) I would love to own such a wonderful quilt) Great idea! |
Any suggestions on colors? Anyone? |
How about a white background for the squares and then blue and gold? (yorkie colors) |

I was a quilter in my former life (before I hit my head...one too many times). I was taught by several Amish ladies in Shipshewana, IN & learned old school: Piece by machine & quilt by hand till your fingers bleed! I've been lurking for awhile & got the courage to add my :twocents: this morning. I have some suggestions on construction. The 10" X 10" white square blocks should be cut from the same bolt of fabric if possible & sent to those who want to do a block. If one person cuts the blocks then they will be sure to be pretty much uniform. That will help greatly in assembling the finished product. Also there needs to be 1/4 inch left around the edge for sewing them together. So it needs to be decided if the blocks are to be cut @ 10 1/2 x 10 1/2 that would give a 10" finished block or 10 x10 that would give a 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 inch finished block. I helped with quilts for our church, Relay for Life & our Girl Scout Service Unit. When it came time to assembling & quilting we had to do alot of adjusting of the blocks that came from everyone. It really helps the finished product if all items are uniform to start with. How big do you want it? Wall hanging, Full size, Queen?? There is iron on transfer paper for photos. You have to run the transfer through a printer to get the photo on it & then iron it on the fabric. I've seen it at WalMart & Staples. As for color, what color are Yorkies? There's Black/Blue, Tan/Gold, White, Chocolate, Red, Silver....ooh, pretty basic...not too colorfull. Punch it up with whatever moves you. Variety of color to accent your beautiful babies. Whoever ends up with the finished blocks will use a border & backing to bring it all together. Sounds like a fun winter project. |
I have always wanted to make a quilt but was afraid to take on the task of a whole quilt by myself. I would love to make a square. I love that it will have a little something to represent all those that helped and to represent Yorkietalk, PLUS the money going to help yorkies is just awesome. I would be in for buying tickets as well. |
I like the white, blue & gold idea or tan & blue. I think we need to run this past Admin. before we get started. Their really good at organizing these things. I have an idea of how we can get the pictures on if we can't get the kind of pictures at the mall. |
yorkie quilt I can sew and have made quilts before....I'll donate a block....I'd need a group to actually do the "quilting" part of it...my eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be for "fine" sewing (small even stitches). roxanne in NC;) |
If someone has a long arm sewing machine or knows someone with one. That would make quilting very fast and inexpensive. I wish that I did, because I would do it in a heart beat. On color I would have to vote against the white. White get so dirty when quilting. The oil from your hands and dust on whatever you are working with. Plus over time it looks dingy. Tan would be good or maybe a Maroon or Forest green. Something to compliment the yorkie colors. I can't wait to make a block. |
Would anyone mind if I buy white fabric to cut the squares? I'll make them 10.5 X 10.5. Anyone who wants to make a square can PM me their address and I'll send them a precut square of the white fabric. (It'll be the weekend before I can get the fabric) In turn, as each person finishes their square, we need a person to put them together for the quilt top. I think when the squares are mailed to that person, we could each put in a $1.00 or $5.00 bill to pay for the backing fabric, lining, and batting so the person who puts the top together can ship to the last person or group to actually quilt it. I know this will need fine tuning - I just want to help in any way possible. Edited ---how about unbleached muslin for the squares? |
What a GREAT idea! Im not a quilter, but I I think I could make a square if given a little direction! Count Harley and I in! |
What a wonderful idea. Looks like there are several quilter's on here. I love quilts. I have never done quilting but would be more than happy to do a square and if I can be taught do more than one. Let me know. |
I sent a pm to admin about this and waiting to see. We have some really, good ideas and some very knowledgeable people. Wall quilt or what size? I think if we make a bigger one, it should be a Queen, as I think that is the most popular size and could go on a full size bed also. If we did wall quilt size, we could make more than one. |
