I'm sorry that people are so rude.
I have the little one and I think mine is the strange size and little embarrassed.
People think I don't feed her or something...
So I usually tell people that mine is smaller than usual. :)
I hope people will have understanding that yorkie comes in all different size!!!

I keep running into people who insist that my dog is a silky terrier rather than a yorkie just because she weighs almost 10 lbs. It bugs me-- they're two different breeds, but for some reason I keep bumping into people who think that a larger yorkie somehow becomes a silky. Ugh. ;)

"No, it's a yorkie. Really. Uh huh, I'm sure."

I love my big puppy-- she's only six or seven months old, and already nearly 10 lbs. I chose the largest pup in her litter on purpose, since I plan to hopefully have children one day in the next 15 years and I wanted a sturdy one that I wouldn't have to fret over a child injuring. Plus, I love hiking and stuff like that, and a bigger dog is a less likely to end up with hypoglycemia or such from long periods of strenuous activity. I love the spunkiness and sweet disposition of the breed-- that interested me much more than their size or appearance. I wanted a companion dog, not a show dog, and a bigger girl fits much better into my life than a wee little one. So, I just let the comments about Penny's size roll off. Anybody who assumes that a little yorkie is somehow better than a big one obviously doesn't know enough to know what's better for me. ;)

I have that SAME problem with the silky terrier thing! Sometimes I want to just carry around Beau's papers to stuff in their face when they WON'T believe ME on what breed of dog I own!

The people who make comments really know nothing about yorkies. And it totally works both ways too. Paddy weighs 4.5-5lbs and EVERYONE asks me if he is a teacup or toy. Then I have to be like....yorkie standard is 7# or less. There really is no such thing as a teacup...its just an extra small yorkie. And then I tell them that yes some yorkies are very small but they should never pay extra for a really small one.

If these people actually owned yorkies I would have a couple books for them to read!

I personally get comments a lot too because I am 26 yrs old and only 4'11". But as we all know good things come in small...and not so small packages!

Once again I must reiterate - if Yorkies could understand what was said - they would have eating disorders! They would feel bad about themselves for being a healthy size......it's so sad. Why this constant affection with size, and smaller being better.......smaller is just one type of Yorkie. And can be very difficult. Not always, but can be.....big small, love them all. Yorkies don't come in just one size.

Sorry for venting, but it just hurts to see how people have such a fixation on small yorkies.....mine is 5 lbs, and is a nice size, but all fur so that she doesn't get told she is big or small - just right I guess............or I would be correcting people all over. I guess all you can do is just put them on ignore..... :)

I haven't had that problem because sawyer weighs 4 1/2 pounds. What i have been shocked at is how many yorkie experts there are out there. They seem to know all the quirks about yorkies, and even if your dog is not demonstrating any of those traits at the time; the so called experts just know that your well behaved little dog is a yapping, ankle biting, neurotic little animal predispossed to all kinds of health problems. I read everything I could get my hands on for the two years before I got my baby. I talked to breeders, went to dog shows, and talked to any yorkie owner I could find; and I still am finding new things about this wonderful breed everyday. I read yorkie talk daily, and have found out so much I hadn't known before. I guess all these experts are just not interested in the true breed, just the hype.:animal36

I had someone say to me yesterday " she looks like a shihtzu " when I said she was a yorkie. Like we were guessing her breed.

No, she's a yorkie....maybe not the same yorkie you have seen, but a purebred yorkie just the same.

Because Jeanie is cotton coat, and darker, I think people get confused.....oh well .

when lacey was 2 lbs i seen a yorkie that was 5 lbs i said he was huge but i only said it because i freaked that a couple of lbs made such a differance between them, not that he was big but i was just used to looking at lacey.

well some people are just downright rude and tactless :mad:

My girl is a bit on the larger size - but her mother was one ounce shy of 8 lbs so that's to be expected. Her mother free whelps - has never had to be taken to the vet for any reason other than routine care - has succesfully raised a liter of EIGHT (although my girl was one of five) pups and has perfect conformation in every way except slightly thick ears. :-)

So - yeah - I'd rather have a larger HEALTHY pup than a sickly small one. Most smaller dogs require C-sections but with the small size any kind of surgery has an increased risk. Becuase we were considering breeding it was IMPORTANT to us to get a female that had a better chance of safe, natural deliveries. Safer for her, safer for her pups.

That woman was a yorkie snob.

Ignore her and kiss your dog. :-)

I am so sorry this happened to you. I have had people do this too with Daisy Mae even and she is full grown 5 pounds! Kodi is only a pound bigger and full grown. people think they are huge I say Nope they are perfect. I wouldn't want it any other way :D I love love love tiny ones but I would be afaid to own one;)

I would never talk about someone else's pet like that. All Yorkies need love period. With that in mind when you say hers looked sickly, I have many people ooo'ing and ahhhh'ng over my boys because they have such nice hair. They are both about 8 pounds so if anything I know I will get comments about their size. other yorkie owners that have smaller ones tend to complain that their dogs hair wont grow and stuff like that. That tells them if their yorkie weighs 2 pounds or three pounds with very thin hair that just because my boys are on the bigger side doesn't mean that they are something to talk down about. When I look at you and see that your dog is happy then i cant complain. To me that is all that matters. Its like talking about someones kid who is chubby, you just keep ur comments to urself if you have something rude or negative to say.
