| First time Yorkie/Dog owner This is our maiden voyage....with a yorkie/dog. We rescued the dog after she was no longer able to breed and would have been put down. She is wonderful! House broken, well-behaved and adorable. Any "Top 10" suggestions we should know about??? Thanks a bunch. |

| Oh, goodness...there is sooooo much to know! My dog I have (9 months old) is my first dog/yorkie ever too, so I know where you're coming from! There's a TON to learn, but you've come to the right place! YT is absolutely FULL of information to learn. If you ever have a question about something, most likely there are a plethera of answers if you use the search box on the main page. Okay...what should I tell you... ?? First of all, it's very important to feed your dog a very high quality food. I didn't know this until I got Kobi, but almost every commercial brand is awful quality. You can go to dogfoodanalysis.com and see some of the best ones listed. Also, yorkies should always be on a harness, not a collar, because they get collapsed tracheas and harnesses don't push on them. Well, I'm drawing a blank for some reason right now , but hopefully someone can pick up where I left off.... I wish you all the best, and NEVER be afraid to ask questions here! Good luck, and of course, WELCOME TO YT!!!

The dog food suggestion above is a really big one. And no table scraps unless it's prepared especially for her. Hair on yorkies can be a decision to make. Long or short? Depends on how much time you have for grooming. They are a very curious breed, even past puppyhood, so make sure your house is Yorkie-proofed. And the BIGGEST suggestion I have is to have A LOT of time for loving!! Because you're gonna need it!! And welcome!!

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Yeah, luvmyprincekobi had two important pieces of advice. Good food and a harness for walks. There was a thread a while back where people discussed things that are bad for Yorkies. I'll post it below. But as a quick reference: No chocolate, caffeine, onions, garlic, mushrooms, grapes or raisis, macadamia nuts, baby food, bones, cat food, fat trimmings, dairy products, raw eggs or raw fish. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58622

| Bless you for rescuing that baby from that horror! Welcome to YT!! You have soooooo come to the right place about everything and anything Yorkie. You have been given great advice about high quality food, harness and food no-no's. How lucky you are that this precious little bundle is already housebroken!! Just give her a WHOLE lot of LOVE.... doesn't sound like she has received much before coming to her wonderful new Mommy. For every teeny bit of love you show these wonderful creatures, you will receive in return an unlimited amount of devotion, adoration, affection, you name it, in return. Welcome again, and please post pics of your girl. We just love, love, love Yorkie pics here. |

| Welcome. Bless you for saving her. I to am a first time Yorkie owner but not my first dog. Winstin is my almost three month old baby and I love him. The best advice I can think of... Do not be afraid to ask questions on here or to your vet. I have learned with Winstin that he is full of love and if I love him he will love back. They are an amazing breed. Best of Luck, you will love it here. Jen |
