| Question about Giardia...Please Help I have had Lola for a little over a week and she seems so healthy. She was dewormed and had her first round of shots at the Breeders. Her first Vet visit was perfect and they said she was in great health. The Vet put her on Panacur for de-worming just to be safe even though the Breeder had done it. Well I forget to bring a stool sample on Thursday with me so brought one in on Saturday (after I had started the Panacur). Her stool was soft but not runny that morning for the first time. It had never been that way and has not been since. I was wondering if it was b/c I had to only give her wet food so I could mix in the Panacur and mentioned it to the Vet tech when I dropped off the sample. Anyway, I got a call this morning from the Vet saying she had Giardia?!?!?! I of course was completely freaked out...she has not had any symptoms...only once was her stool a little soft. I asked the Vet (or Vet assistant...not sure who did the stool analysis) and he said that she would need to go on antibiotics. I told him that she was taking Panacur and wanted to make sure that would not have any interactions. He said that that was actually what he was going to prescribe? Hmmm...obviously he had not read her medical file. Well...she has one day left of the Panacur and then is supposed to do another round in 5 days. Has anyone's baby ever had Giardia with NO symptoms? Could the Panacur have caused a mis diagnosis? I absolutely want to be careful and am now worried about transmitting it? What do I need to know. The Vet seemed a little nonchalant but when I looked it up it seemed a little more serious and scary! Any insight would be great. Thank you!!!! T |

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | When i got Daisy she was in perfect heath. Great poop eating great everything but i had done a poop sample and sure enough she had Giardia we were all shocked to say the least! I took us 2 months to get rid of it but we finally did. Suggestions...... You must pick up all poop and dispose of it and wash your hands everytime and disinfect area(even if it's in your yard). Also wash you hands when you touch her and if you have other animals she must be seperated from them. Keep her on the meds till it's gone. Giardia doesn't show up in every sample so you will need to do a few of them over time. Like i said Daisy had no symptoms either but she had it bad the worst you can get it a +4 But it will go away i know it's hard it was awful for us.

| Thank you so much for responding! Fortunately I don't have any other animals and she is still using pee pads so I will definitely be throwing them away after each use. I am going to call the Vet tomorrow and find out more. I was shocked and didn't know much about this disease when I was talking to him this morning but I have done some research and can talk to him and understand more what he is saying. Again, thank you!!! I feel so bad for Lola...I just hope she is not in any pain . THANK GOD I did a stool analysis!!! |

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | your welcome i know how hard it is to go through this.there are a lot of site with info on them if you google giardia.just remember you can catch it from her so make sure you wash a lot. Whe she fianlly test neg make sure you do another sample in a month or 2 so you make sure it hasn't come back. Your vet should be able to answer all your questions good luck and if you need anything let me know.
