Hi everyone, well my Nemo hates baths too, but he is getting better he can't stand the dryer either, he gets really angry when I turn it on, anyway I find that I like the mane and tail shampoo and conditioner, I mainly use the conditioner, and also I have not found a product that works better than helene curtis's thermasilk detangler leave-in conditioner nemo's coat comes out so soft and the comb glides right through, so far so good and his coat is starting to change colors, I am still upset at how the technician at petsmart shaved all the hair off his legs and thigh area after I asked her not to cut his hair at all other than tipping his ears, the hair is growing back very slow I did not think it would take this long (been over a month now)....

1. How do you keep cotton in their ears when you bathe in order to keep water out? I've tried everything I can think of short of duck tape and it just doesn't stay in.

I use the squeezeable ear plugs that you can squeez very thin then they expand in the ear and prevent water from getting into it.

2. What is the ear powder - does that help keep ears dry or is it just for friction when you pull out the hair? What brand/type is best. I don't want her to have another ear problem.

The powder does both, helps keep the ear dry but is mostly used for removing hair from inside the ear

3. TANGLES!!!! Despite trying to comb 10 - 30 min a day Mia's tummy is a mess of teeny dreadlocks. Should I snip them and start over? seems to be her puppy fur. Same on the back portion of her back, haunches and legs - especially the back legs. Her head, chest front legs and the front 2/3 of her back (seems to be where she is changing color) is becoming silky and easy to maintain. Is this normal? Her back 1/3 is now almost like a different kind of fur than her front 2/3.

I just spent almost 2 hours bathing, drying, combing and tried every treat I could think of. She still wanted to tear me apart. I know the tangles hurt and she is quite the drama queen, but I don't want her to develop a fear/hatred of being combed or she'll have to be the Kojak (oops, did I just date myself??) of Yorkie Land. She also HATES the hair dryer even though I use a diffuser dryer and keep it far away.

When they are losing the puppy hair it does tend to get into tiny knots, I use a slicker brush to remove these, start by gently pulling the matt apart then brush from the bottom of the mat up. I hold the hair between their skin and the mat to prevent the pulling that seems to hurt. Sometimes you just have to work the mat a little at a time.

4. Teeth - I haven't ventured into tooth brushing yet. What kind/brand of brush/paste do you use?

There is chicken flavored tooth paste made especially for dogs, and you can just put some of this onto the gauze pads and rub their teeth as well as you can. With their tiny mouths I find it hard to try to get a tooth brush into them, even a baby toothbrush

5. It seems the minute I get her combed, she looks like a ragamuffin again. Not that it isn't cute, but..... Any suggestions????

A conditioning spray does help when combing or brushing them. While they are puppies I find that it is hard to keep them looking groomed.

6. Toenails don't seem to be a problem - clipped those w/o a wriggle. She does seem to have 2 'dew' claws, though. Should they be removed?

If puppies are started very young with their nails they very seldom fight this. I start clipping my puppies nails the week they are born and do it weekly so that they get used to it, it makes it much easier when they are grown. The dew claws should have been removed when the tails were docked, but it is not a necessity unless they cause a problem

7. Color - Does their hair change color, or does it just grow in the new color and you eventually trim the old color off?

The hair changes color as it grows, and by trimming the older color is removed, and also when brushing, some of the hair comes out in the brush, just as it does for you. If you don't trim the hair, you may see 2 or 3 different colors on their coats.

Thanks for ALL your help! Not sure what I'd do if I hadn't found you! I'm sure I'll have more questions!

TIA

Julie
Hope all of this has helped some

Thank you!!! I received Toto's BTB Detangling Shampoo and bathed her in it yesterday .... I still don't believe it!!! It was amazing!! I have never been able to just run a comb through her hair without encountering a few tangles before!! And she is just as soft and shiny as she is when I spend the couple of extra hours brushing and conditioning!! The only thing different was she was a little "fluffier" and there was a lot more "static" but I have a spray on conditioner that I believe will eliminate that! The climate is so very dry here in Colorado that we have all had more static!! A man in a store reached over to touch Toto and almost lit the end of her little nose up!! Thanks again for sharing about this great product!!!

Hi Bettyeanne,

Your welcome. I really stand behind this product like it was my own ,so do chester and chelsey. They love bath time. I spend I hour in total for both dogs. That's the bath drying , ear, clip nails and a trim. They do not suffer from combing out matts at all so they have more funn that way. When drying try not to rub the towel just wrap them in it for a while in winter time, then blow dry.
What I do is comb them while bathing then rince in the direction you want the hair to lay. then I tell them both dust off and they shake . I wrap them in the towel tightly and let them lay down for 10 to 15 min to get the water out. Then I blow dry them in winter . I only use my fingers for chelsey to seporate the hair making sure to dry to bottom with the hair dryer. That might eliminat the static. For Chester the yorkie I brush him while drying. That it. They are good to go for an other week.

I also bought the whiten shampoo for Chelsey as he get stained very quick being all white. It also works great.
We don't have much static in toronto . The only time Chester got static was when I took him to the groomer. His hair cut was nice but his coat did look at good as when I shampooed it with BTB. It was very dry and not silky as normal. Hope Toto does not get shocked to much .

After reading about the Bless the Beasts products for a while on here, I just had to place my order. Did it yesterday - can't wait to try it out on Tatum!

Awesome info!

I still can't figure out how to keep the cotton in her ears.....oh well.

QVC has the bless the beast detangling shampoo, a tube of conditioner and the fragrance spray for $19 + $4.xx shipping right now. Guess I'll give it a try. Also gonna try the infusium next time I run to the store.

Dreadlocks just aren't my idea of fun, but my 19yo son thinks it's pretty cool...POOR MIA!

Happened to have my invoice handy ... I placed my order online on 12/1 and it was shipped 12/2 ... received it via FedEx Home Delivery here in Grand Junction on 12/8 and naturally tried it 12/9! Sure didn't take long this morning early to brush The Toto ... put her topknot and her three "ponytails" on her rear up ... and be on time for her vet appointment at 9AM! Took the cab longer to get here than it did to get her ready to go! Had to get a Health Certificate for Toto to fly on the 19th ... we always travel with Toto's records, you would think that would be enough! I don't like strange vets handling my baby!!
