Breeder says puppy can go home at 8 weeks? I have been looking for a female yorkie the last couple of months and we finally found one! She is 6 weeks old and the breeder says she can come home with us in 2 weeks. Is this ok???? From what I have read puppy yorkie needs to say with it's mother the first 12 weeks? I would love take her earlier but I want what is best for her. What do you think? On the other hand if we get her earlier would it help her bond with us easier? thank you!! I'm so new at this I'm still learning. Great messageboard here!! I'll have to keep on reading! |
i see a big red flag as a breeder i would never let a YT puppy go before 12 weeks ... I promise it wont hurt your bonding ..and it wont break your heart like haveing your new puppy die one you! make shure your puppy has had a vet check and at 8 weeks your puppy has only had one shot !! I hope you work out of home if you get an 8 week old puppy since you will be feeding it 6 times aday .. thats how often my 8 week old puppies eat and the food is still gurle with a little dry in for them to break in there teeth look up hypoglycema i know i misspelled that but know what your setting yourself up for |
A lot of people say 12 weeks, but I got both of mine at 8. They are doing fine, altough I wished Dakota would have stayed longer because she needed more bonding time with her mom. |
I got maggie at almost 11 weeks. i would not take a pup any earlier than 10 weeks...at the earliest. i would just wait a little longer. go ahead and put your money down on her but wait a little longer to take her home. btw...welcome to YT :) |
i got lacey at 8 weeks but i am home 24/7 and have hadpuppies before so i knew how much work it was going to be. she did absolutly great and had no problems adjusting. |

i think 8 weeks is fine, if your home all day and can make sure its eatting and watching it ,,,,, i got both of mine before 10 weeks and they were alot of work but i was home all day with them,,, |
I got Penny at 8 weeks, but I'm home full time, so everything worked out well. Make sure you get health records. |
It is best that the pup stay with mom until a little older. I know that down here, people will let them go as early as 6 weeks...which, IMO, is WAY too young. I got Dallas and Gracie at 8 weeks and they've done just fine adjusting and bonding. I sold one pup at around 14 weeks and it took him a lot longer to bond with his new family. |
here in va the new recommendation the vets states is the puppy can leave as soon as 7 weeks but i think this is too young. i have let mine go at 8 weeks b/c the my mommie was growling and snipping at them so much....they had been weined for 4 weeks and on their own hard food. they had been vet ck'd and had their shots so i didn't feel like keeping them here any longer was to their best interest. although i hate to see them go, i think getting them into their new home where training can start with the new parents was ok. i still feel 10-12 weeks is best but you have to look at each situation to determine if it is right for the puppy. |
That is not the ideal age to bring them home yet thats when I brought mine home and they did fine. They both could have probably used the longer socialization with there Mom and littermates though |
We got Lolo from a breeder that told us she was 10 weeks old and ready to go home. I took her to the vet for a check up and he told us she was only about 7 or 8 weeks old and WAY too young to come home with us. She ended up having severe hypoglycemia and ended up having seizures. The vet told us that this is common in small breeds but is exagerated even more when they are taken away too early from their mom. I was up every 3 hours to feed her and care for her, as her mom (well, her dog mom) would have been doing. Please be careful and aware of the care they need at such a young age! The more you know before you get her the better you and her will be! |
How much does she weigh? A big part is size. If she's too small she needs to be with her mother longer. Average is 10 to 12 weeks before they leave, but I have seen 8 - 10 weeks if the pup is a good size pup (Over 2 lbs.) And, I wouldn't take her that early unless you are a stay at home mom that doesn't have to work. Elaine |
