Breeder says puppy can go home at 8 weeks? I have been looking for a female yorkie the last couple of months and we finally found one! She is 6 weeks old and the breeder says she can come home with us in 2 weeks. Is this ok???? From what I have read puppy yorkie needs to say with it's mother the first 12 weeks? I would love take her earlier but I want what is best for her. What do you think? On the other hand if we get her earlier would it help her bond with us easier? thank you!! I'm so new at this I'm still learning. Great messageboard here!! I'll have to keep on reading! |
i see a big red flag as a breeder i would never let a YT puppy go before 12 weeks ... I promise it wont hurt your bonding ..and it wont break your heart like haveing your new puppy die one you! make shure your puppy has had a vet check and at 8 weeks your puppy has only had one shot !! I hope you work out of home if you get an 8 week old puppy since you will be feeding it 6 times aday .. thats how often my 8 week old puppies eat and the food is still gurle with a little dry in for them to break in there teeth look up hypoglycema i know i misspelled that but know what your setting yourself up for |
A lot of people say 12 weeks, but I got both of mine at 8. They are doing fine, altough I wished Dakota would have stayed longer because she needed more bonding time with her mom. |
I got maggie at almost 11 weeks. i would not take a pup any earlier than 10 weeks...at the earliest. i would just wait a little longer. go ahead and put your money down on her but wait a little longer to take her home. btw...welcome to YT :) |
i got lacey at 8 weeks but i am home 24/7 and have hadpuppies before so i knew how much work it was going to be. she did absolutly great and had no problems adjusting. |

i think 8 weeks is fine, if your home all day and can make sure its eatting and watching it ,,,,, i got both of mine before 10 weeks and they were alot of work but i was home all day with them,,, |
I got Penny at 8 weeks, but I'm home full time, so everything worked out well. Make sure you get health records. |
It is best that the pup stay with mom until a little older. I know that down here, people will let them go as early as 6 weeks...which, IMO, is WAY too young. I got Dallas and Gracie at 8 weeks and they've done just fine adjusting and bonding. I sold one pup at around 14 weeks and it took him a lot longer to bond with his new family. |
here in va the new recommendation the vets states is the puppy can leave as soon as 7 weeks but i think this is too young. i have let mine go at 8 weeks b/c the my mommie was growling and snipping at them so much....they had been weined for 4 weeks and on their own hard food. they had been vet ck'd and had their shots so i didn't feel like keeping them here any longer was to their best interest. although i hate to see them go, i think getting them into their new home where training can start with the new parents was ok. i still feel 10-12 weeks is best but you have to look at each situation to determine if it is right for the puppy. |
That is not the ideal age to bring them home yet thats when I brought mine home and they did fine. They both could have probably used the longer socialization with there Mom and littermates though |
We got Lolo from a breeder that told us she was 10 weeks old and ready to go home. I took her to the vet for a check up and he told us she was only about 7 or 8 weeks old and WAY too young to come home with us. She ended up having severe hypoglycemia and ended up having seizures. The vet told us that this is common in small breeds but is exagerated even more when they are taken away too early from their mom. I was up every 3 hours to feed her and care for her, as her mom (well, her dog mom) would have been doing. Please be careful and aware of the care they need at such a young age! The more you know before you get her the better you and her will be! |
How much does she weigh? A big part is size. If she's too small she needs to be with her mother longer. Average is 10 to 12 weeks before they leave, but I have seen 8 - 10 weeks if the pup is a good size pup (Over 2 lbs.) And, I wouldn't take her that early unless you are a stay at home mom that doesn't have to work. Elaine |

I got Rocky at 8 weeks and i took of like 3 days to be with him and he's fine today |
It would be best to wait and get the pup at 10-12 wks. I got Slade at 7 wks, but when I was away from home for any length of time I was worried sick that he wasn't eating or drinking like he should and I would come home to a sick puppy. However, he has turned out okay, but I have another dog to show him the ropes and teach him proper social skills. |
I got Lucy at 11 weeks and so far she has been great though she did have a dehydration/hypo incident. I can tell you this - after being on here and learning what I know now I would be too afraid to bring one home before 12 weeks. Best of luck to you! :) |

There are so many problems that a owner wont know how to deal with case in point my puppy had a prolaps at 14 weeks ... and since i have given up my social life to be a breeder i caught it quickly a new owner might of been at work or somthing else and when somthing go's wrong with a puppy it is life or death and when they are 2lbs its a lot faster than a lab or a collie Im sorry i failed to say welcome to YT i hope this helps |

She HAS been breeding for over 20 years. |
My Dad gave me Maggie (my 1st yorkie) as a gift, and he was told by the breeder that Maggie was 60 days old... well, the breeder LIED!!! She was about 35 days old:mad:  and didn't have teeth yet!!! The breeder sent a little bag of kibble he was feeding her (LIAR:thumbdown )... needless to say that she wouldn't eat because she couldn't chew hard kibble... so I had to give her special puppy food every 2 hours... Hannah was my b-day gift, and hubby bought her w/ 3 months old... I admit that Hannah took longer to attach to us then Maggie... |
My Heidi came to me at 8 weeks..i was only 19 at the time and didn't know any better then (14 years ago now) i didn't have YorkieTalk to guide me back then! someone was always home with her though and she did absolutely fine.My new baby comes to me 9th september, the day before she turns 14 weeks old.:) |

We do not keep our puppies only because thats what we were told but because that is what is usually best for them. I would also like to add that by keeping them those extra 4 weeks, the breeder does have to feed the pups longer, clean after them, maybe begin potty training and give them an additonal set of shots. That all takes time and costs money, we don't do things in vein. Also, nobody is saying the lady you spoke to has not been breeding for 20 years but I agree with aka_yorkie_mama 100%...;) Maybe that breeder wants to spare the added expense and time  JMHO |
[QUOTE=puppy_Love08;1323189]She HAS been breeding for over 20 years.[/QUOT there are LOTs of bad breeders who have been breeding for years ... im not going to fling mud but c'mon now alot of breeder breed for $$$$ and have done so for years but to do it right at six weeks yorkies dont even have teeth ok i am done ... to young is looking for trouble and heartache in MHO |
Thank you for taking the time to respond!!! I learned a lot by reading your opinions. ps. Yes I do work from home, so puppy and I will get to hang out during the day as well! :) |
Higgins did just fine...... We got Higgins at 7 1/2 weeks and he did just fine. We were spending the winter in Florida in our 17' Casita travel trailer, so he bonded well with us and with our other dog, Pogo! He learned to race up and down that little "house" and got LOTS of socialization with all the other RV park residents and dogs. I think it depends on the puppy and the situation. My vet thought it was perfectly okay. |

Hello I Have Had 2 Yorkies And Got Both Of Them At 8 Weeks, They Were Fine But Were Home With Someone All Day Long. As I Have Never Had A Puppy That Was 12 Weeks, When I Got It, I Honestly Cant Say What The Difference Would Be. Health Wise Though My Two Were In Excellent Health, Benjie I Had For 14 Years. And Harvey Is Now 17 Months Old. |

I didnt feed them 6x a day, but I did free feed them (still do actually) so they were never w/o food & water. I wouldnt sleep with a puppy that young in your bed for 2 reasons, a) they are just too small and you could easily hurt them by rolling over in your sleep and b) they are not housebroken (enuff said on that one haha) |
