It would be best to wait and get the pup at 10-12 wks.

I got Slade at 7 wks, but when I was away from home for any length of time I was worried sick that he wasn't eating or drinking like he should and I would come home to a sick puppy. However, he has turned out okay, but I have another dog to show him the ropes and teach him proper social skills.

I got Lucy at 11 weeks and so far she has been great though she did have a dehydration/hypo incident. I can tell you this - after being on here and learning what I know now I would be too afraid to bring one home before 12 weeks.

Best of luck to you! :)

I took her to the vet for a check up and he told us she was only about 7 or 8 weeks old and WAY too young to come home with us. She ended up having severe hypoglycemia and ended up having seizures. The vet told us that this is common in small breeds but is exagerated even more when they are taken away too early from their mom. I was up every 3 hours to feed her and care for her, as her mom (well, her dog mom) would have been doing. Please be careful and aware of the care they need at such a young age! The more you know before you get her the better you and her will be!

Thank you for sharing this
There are so many problems that a owner wont know how to deal with case in point my puppy had a prolaps at 14 weeks ... and since i have given up my social life to be a breeder i caught it quickly a new owner might of been at work or somthing else and when somthing go's wrong with a puppy it is life or death and when they are 2lbs its a lot faster than a lab or a collie
Im sorry i failed to say welcome to YT i hope this helps

I asked one of the reputable breeders why she let hers go at 8 weeks while many others say the puppies shouldn't go to homes until 12 weeks. She told me it's because these breeders are only doing what they've been told, but it's not accurate. Most reputable breeders will gauge how their puppies are doing. If they are not eating well yet and seem too small to leave, they will keep them until they are ready. Socialization is from 8 weeks to 14, so if breeders don't let them go until they are 12 weeks, they have only 2 weeks left of that important socialization period with their new family.

ummm lets see how to say this nicely aww forget the nice .. this is BS she fed you ask some of the 20+ vets in the breeder form mine are eating on there own at 6 weeks but only a fool would let them go then and do you think she would tell you well i lost a few ... because even the best breeders in the world who have been breeding for 20 years have lost a few
this is just my HONEST opionion

My Dad gave me Maggie (my 1st yorkie) as a gift, and he was told by the breeder that Maggie was 60 days old... well, the breeder LIED!!! She was about 35 days old:mad:  and didn't have teeth yet!!! The breeder sent a little bag of kibble he was feeding her (LIAR:thumbdown )... needless to say that she wouldn't eat because she couldn't chew hard kibble... so I had to give her special puppy food every 2 hours...

Hannah was my b-day gift, and hubby bought her w/ 3 months old...

I admit that Hannah took longer to attach to us then Maggie...

I would like to say, yes, size and appetite does matter, but it is not the only thing that matters. It is an important part of a Yorkie puppies socialization process to be socialized by his/her fur-mother & sibblings between 8-12 weeks of age. The puppy should be sound, vaccinated, well socialized and more before it is ready to go to his/her new home...

We do not keep our puppies only because thats what we were told but because that is what is usually best for them. I would also like to add that by keeping them those extra 4 weeks, the breeder does have to feed the pups longer, clean after them, maybe begin potty training and give them an additonal set of shots. That all takes time and costs money, we don't do things in vein.

Also, nobody is saying the lady you spoke to has not been breeding for 20 years but I agree with aka_yorkie_mama 100%...;) Maybe that breeder wants to spare the added expense and time

Thank you for taking the time to respond!!!

I learned a lot by reading your opinions. ps. Yes I do work from home, so puppy and I will get to hang out during the day as well! :)

Higgin's Mom 08-23-2007 03:59 AM

Higgins did just fine......

We got Higgins at 7 1/2 weeks and he did just fine. We were spending the winter in Florida in our 17' Casita travel trailer, so he bonded well with us and with our other dog, Pogo! He learned to race up and down that little "house" and got LOTS of socialization with all the other RV park residents and dogs.

I think it depends on the puppy and the situation. My vet thought it was perfectly okay.

Six weeks seems too young to me, too. The breeder says she gradually gets the puppy used to being away from the mother, but I'm not convinced even that's a good idea at such a young age. Most of the breeders I'm running across in this area release their babies around 8 weeks, including the breeder I'm buying from (who happens to be a vet). However, we will probably wait until he's 10 weeks before taking him.

Hello

I Have Had 2 Yorkies And Got Both Of Them At 8 Weeks, They Were Fine But Were Home With Someone All Day Long. As I Have Never Had A Puppy That Was 12 Weeks, When I Got It, I Honestly Cant Say What The Difference Would Be.

Health Wise Though My Two Were In Excellent Health, Benjie I Had For 14 Years. And Harvey Is Now 17 Months Old.

I got both my boys at 9 weeks old and they were perfectly fine. They were weaned completely and on puppy food and they my breeder only does the first round of shots, after that the new owner does the shots. So I did thier 12 week and 15week shots myself.
I didnt feed them 6x a day, but I did free feed them (still do actually) so they were never w/o food & water. I wouldnt sleep with a puppy that young in your bed for 2 reasons, a) they are just too small and you could easily hurt them by rolling over in your sleep and b) they are not housebroken (enuff said on that one haha)
