| Does your Yorkie chew his own nails? Hi All! Jackson, my 11 month old, has been chewing his nails on his back paws for a few months & within the last couple months now chews the front as well. Of course the first time I heard the clicking & saw what he was doing I freaked a little as I thought something was wrong. I checked him over head to paw to tail. I did not see anything unusual - like missing hair, infection, sores or a rash. He does not chew them down short, rather he keeps them trim. I had the vet check his nails & paws at our last visit which was approx. a month ago. There was nothing wrong with them & his nails were perfect length. He has only had his nails clipped two other times before that. Once when he was 14 weeks old & the other time he was about 6 months old. I have a Cocker that needs his nails trimmed every 8-10 weeks. Is it odd my Yorkie is chewing his own nails - is he trying to give me a hint? Does anyone else's Yorkie do this? How long before trimmings is normal for a Yorkie? Am I being a bad mom & he is taking things into his own paws? |

| I never heard of this, but if the Vet was happy with them I'd say let him go for it. Maybe they get to long for him, so he chews them off.

| Maybe he dreads the nail clippers, so he takes care of it himself! How convenient for you. Chelsea wont let ME clip hers, so the groomer has to do it.

| My maltese definately does this. I always know when it's getting time to trim her nails because I notice her chewing them. I thought it was wierd and never heard of it before either, so it's nice to know she's not the only one... |

| I read an article from Drs. Foster & Smith about allergies and that chewing on the paws was a symptom. I also asked my vet about it and we couldn't find what he could have been allergic to. Sonny still chews on his paw from time to time. No problems though.

| I think chewing or excessive licking on paws from allergies if different though. Chloe actually does chew on her nail and when she's chewed it off, she's done. It's not a allergy problem or habit. |

| I think your right...come to think about it, Sonny only chews on his dew claws because his breeder didn't have them removed. Thanks for clearing that up. No need to scare someone about allergy problems.

| We had the same problem when Roxie was a puppy. Now that shes older shes grown out of it. We asked our vet and he said that she could be doing it because of allergies, but as she got older it became habit and she grew out of it.

| OMG - THIS DRIVES ME INSANE!!! TJ's nail grow like wild fire...I have to take him every 3 weeks (not a day later) b/c sometime between week 2 and 3 his nail are long enough for him to chew on and he make DRAGERS out of them. He likes to chew on them sometime in the middle of the night. And at the same time he licks his foot hair to the point that his whole foot and going up his leg is complete soaking wet! IT DRIVES ME INSANE!!!! The Vet said TJ has OCD and that is why he does this. TJ could also sit and lick my husbands head soaking wet and my husbands pillow case! I hate it! When I catch TJ doing anyone of these things, I tell him stop it! And I cover his paws with my hands, but then he proceeds to lick my hands, which I can't stand either, b/c it dries my skin out. So, then I resort to covering his paws with a blanket and he has no choice but to fall alseep |
