A VERY touchy subject! None of my dogs are debarked. However, I have spoken to a good breeder friend that has considered doing this with her dogs (just the key barkers). It's actually a laser surgery and they can even eat the same day. The neighbor behind us has a poodle that has been debarked. Yes, this dog can still bark (argues with my crew all the time through the fence:rolleyes: ). It's just not the shrill, high pitched, make your skin crawl kind of bark. Puppy mills debark in a cruel way (ramming a pipe down their throats). However, if someone were to do it via vet then I'm not going to condemn them. There was a time when I was against it completely and thought it was horribly cruel. However, now days, I try to keep an open mind to things. Training my dogs to not bark is not as easy as it sounds since I'm not there to correct them all day long. Well, OP, good luck in whatever you decide. But, speak to a vet and find out the pros and cons and choose what is best for you, your family and your living arrangements. |

OMG!!! What planet have i been living on??? I've never heard of this before! it sounds awful! I don't like Tail Docking either...dogs should be as nature intended as far as i'm concerned..with barks and tails to express themselves.:animal36 |
Glad to hear that you are not thinking of doing this. I would find a new vet too if mine suggested such a thing. I never heard of de barking a dog before! I feel this is horrible! This is a way a bog communicates, I couldn't imagine having my only form of communication taken away from me! Dogs bark, if you don't like the behavior of an over barker their are other way's to take care of it, like a water bottle, coins in a can, or putting them in another area. I hope you have luck with your baby! |

I really could care less one way or another about the procedure, mainly because it doesn't involve me and it's just not one of those things that I choose to devote time to concerning myself over. But, I will say that upon first hearing of the procedure, I was as shocked and appalled in a manner reflected by most of the response posts here. But I was even more shocked when I learned how many people actually have the procedure done. I don't mean millers or lazy people who don't want to train their dogs--I mean ethical, long time show breeders. MANY more here on YT than you would think that some of you so opposed to the practice sing praises to everyday...as do I. I spoke with them, heard their experience and reasoning and it made me see things differently.:) Like I said before, I really don't care one way or another. I don't personally think it would be the best choice for me, but I have no reason to need it. My dogs aren't barkers for the most part and on occasion when my hound stirs up a ruckus, no one around me cares...their dogs just bark right back.:p |
