Sew up his little hole :eyetearss sorry that was just funny...but I get your point and totally agree that dogs should not be de-barked...its terrible advice thats for sure!!

Hi Foxyroxie- Welcome to YT!:) Sorry one of your first posts ended up being such a hot button but as you can see this is a group of very passionate people and as you know now, most are against debarking (as am I). Try putting pennies in a can and shaking it at your dog when she barks. This is a tried and true remedy that gets passed around quite often on YT and it really works. My Gracie was a major barker and I didn't start doing this until she was 3 yrs old and it still worked. I call it my magic can.;) Good luck!

I can't imagine that anyone would do this. Ours is a little runner, and her bark is what has helped us find her when it was dark. I know I am a bad mom because we don't have a fence, but she has pulled herself out of our hands or had her harness and her collar break as well. Anyway, barking is how they protect themselves and us.:aimeeyork

And wow - you did have a great post with a lot of opinions (albeit all the same on this one). And that pig experimentation story? - wow, if that doesn't getcha, I don't know what would!

We're using the water bottle and it's working pretty well. Unfortunately, he's often wet! ;) But it's now getting to the point that I can pick up the water bottle and show him and he quiets right down.

I dont have any info for you. just like to say I would never have it done...dogs bark..thats it...i used a water bottle for a long time...so now when mine bark alot all i have to do now is pick up that water bottle and they look at me and stop barking lol it is kinda funny.....but it worked

Welcome to YorkieTalk! There are a million other ways to get your yorkie to stop barking. The pennies in a can or spraying water on them when they bark are good ways to teach them not to bark. Honestly, de-barking a dog is very cruel as it takes away their means of communication. I am appalled at the fact that your vet acutally recommended this. I would definitely find a new one, as it shows what kind of person he is. This is a hot-topic here, so please don't take the things the wrong way. Everyone here is just passionate about furbabies :) I can't imagine not being able to express myself through words...So I definitely can't imagine taking away my dog's ability to express himself. He actually talks...Well, he doesn't TALK, but he makes noises and tries to mock the noises that we make. It's not a growl and it's not a bark. Anyway, that's a huge part of who he is....Just do a google search about debarking a dog. It's really a bad thing.

My Teddy who is around 14 lbs is a constant barker. Even though I have been able to train all my dogs to do what is needed he would not learn.
I tried the can, clicker, citronilla spray, water bottle spray - nothing worked.

He is just over two and had worn a bark collar (shocking kind) for most of his life. I let the batteries die out over a year ago but if I take the collar off he will bark 24/7. With it on he is fine. Go figure?

He uses the collar as a reminder at this point as it would not do anything if he barked. It is just a reminder I guess. He also loves his collar and gives me sad eyes when I take it off.:p

I think it's wonderful that you came on here looking for information before just doing what your vet suggested. It shows you care about your baby, and don't worry about the controversy. We are all just very passionate :) I hope you find something to help with her barking. There were many good suggestions posted :)

We've been trying many of the tips suggested (Roxie is a year old), but we are going to try and stick to one type and keep up on it. Hopefully, she'll catch on.

IMO if you dont want your dog to bark then find him/her a good home and buy a pet fish instead of a dog. Dogs bark thats what they do, you can train most of them not to bark, but some are more stubborn. I would never suggest that kind of cruelty.

I can't stand when vets make those kind of recommendations. It makes it obvious that some are only in it for the money... I'm very happy that you are going to look for a new vet. :)

I'd never even consider "debarking" a dog. That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard of.

I'm also VERY anti-declawing for cats. Ironically, the apartment I live in has a silly clause requiring that cats be declawed, but they didn't ask... if they did try to get me to declaw mine, I'd move.

Besides, I didn't pay a hefty pet fee for nothing. :P
