My husband and I unfortunately have to be very firm with children to stay away from Scruffles. I will not let children come near him and pet him, unless I know the child, because I have found that children can be very rough. I have zero tolerance for aggressive children and some adults who can also act inappropriately around small dogs.

[QUOTE=pepe mint;1250488]I am going to have my bff make Maggie a shirt that says "i bite!!!"

Mike here, "Alaska Yorkie", got a darling shirt from Shana at Tinkerbelle's Closet that says :"I only bite when ugly people pet me".....I thought that was hilarious

A friend of mine once told me it was the little dogs you need to fear the most. Even if their little bite doesn't hurt you, their bark will wake up the big dog who just might.

WOW. I don't have any problems with Diesel. He get nervous around anyone but he NEVER bites. He will even lick a little and shake at the same time. He is like if we just walk into an area full of people. I don't mind people rubbing Diesel. It helps to socialize him.

I have had one little girl who keeps running up to him at gym and she bugs the hell out of him. Finally one day I finally had enough. I got pretty loud and said leave him alone! She is the only one that has ever given me any trouble.

I have taught my own daughter that no matter how small or big a dog is she is to ALWAYS ask if she can rub them. She knows better than to run up and bug the hell out of a dog. I am shocked that more parents don't teach their kids right from wrong.

I hate it too!!! Princess will bite if she gets really scared.. and ppl still come.. i say she bites.. they say either the "its okay" or "no she wont.."

its like helloooooooo????? i think i know her more than you and i dont feel like paying for you hospital BILL!!

she hasnt bit an adult but she gets really scared around kids cuz they sometimes get really loud she growls and tries to bite them if they suddenly just touch her..

I agree that some parents don't teach their children how to ask to pet dogs anymore. Luckily, I've never had any problems with Ana. She just loves everyone and everything. When we're in Petco, she has to greet everyone she sees and will bark if I don't let her say hello to a fellow pooch. Last time we went to the pet store, I had to convince some kids that Ana is really nice and was just really excited to see them. She was running around like crazy and pulling on her leash to go and run up to them and give them kisses. Once, I had to pick her up because a little girl was so scared of her that she wouldn't walk past us. The funny thing is that Ana doesn't have a mean bone in her body, she just gets so excited, she's TOO social! I spend more time coaxing people to say hello and pet her than I do keeping children away from her.

wow i'm reading these and i'm amazed at how calm you guys are about it. whenever there's a little kid who won't leave mika alone, i just tell them that she bites and doesn't like strangers, and if they don't leave me alone, i just yell at them.

I have always taught my daughter the proper way to ask to pet, and to let the dog sniff you first. But what is with Kids Wanting to Pick them up!
When I have all three out one big and then the two Yorkies I always am telling the kids to go play with the big dog ,the little ones are afaid of loud noises and kids waving their hands in there faces. And I am not one to be nice. If A kid needs to be told I tell them if there parents are not doing there Job. And If the parents don't like it TO BAD!

The problem with these kids is...their parents. People dont teach their kids any manners about anything. Kids are rude in restaurants. Today at lunch a kid a few tables away stood in the seat through 90% of the meal. Her oblivious mother never said a word. They stand in the middle of the aisle at the store, they crowd in line, they talk during movies. Kids are just not being taught manners!

I agree. A lot of people are misunderstanding several "trendy" child-rearing methods, thinking that their children should be free to choose their actions all the time. This means NO discipline, even in situations where the consequence does not support good decision making.

I was always taught to respect animals and their space, and to ALWAYS ask the owner's permission before petting a dog, and then to ask the DOG'S permission to pet him!!! Most of my friends are the same. I wish someone would teach these kids, because you know that the parents of these rude kids would sue you in a heartbeat if your dog bit, even just a little bite.

I did have a child ask me last week at petsmart if he could pet my dog, and he was very gentle with him. Also the little girl who lives down the street from me always comes running out when we go on our walk, and her mother follows behind her saying "ask if it's okay first! He might be grouchy today!" So all hope isn't lost.

I did have some kids teasing him in line at a pet store one day, not too long after I had gotten him. They were buying hermit crabs, and their dad was arguing with the clerk over the sale price of them. They kept calling Paddington, but when he would start to go over to him, they would act like they were afraid and run away. The first time, I said "Don't worry, he's nice. He just came because he thought you wanted to see him" Then they did the same thing again... and again... and again! Paddington was going NUTS! I told them Please stop, if you call him he's going to come and want to play. It isn't nice. They ignored me and kept doing it, so I picked Paddington up and gave them a mean glare. Their dad finished the purchase and as they were walking out, the older boy said "That lady was mean and her dog was mean!" and the dad said "Some people don't like kids." ... um, yeah, I don't like kids, that's why I chose an underpaid career as a PRESCHOOL TEACHER I was so angry, and the person in line behind me said that I had been much too nice to them, she would have told them off after the second time.

I hear you.

Seriously, have they ever thought about possibly getting BIT!!! Use your head!

I was waiting outside the store for my sister, and I had Missy sitting my lap outside and some random child comes laughing & running towards me and Missy... she attempted to pet Missy and I immediately grabbed her hand and allowed her to pet Missy with my hand holding hers to show her the how gentle you have to be, because my experience with children touching my dog has been horrible... that is why Missy gets scared & start barking at dogs, because of crazy children running to her like crazy. Dogs have different personalities, they need to realize that.

Now i am babysitting a 7 year old. He has gotten on my nerves. He has this stuffed Sonic toy and he gave it to Missy to play with and started whining about wanting it back. So i gave it back to him. Missy started barking & crying for it, but then I managed to get her attention elsewhere. Anyways, I was in the kitchen and spotted him teasing Missy with the toy by flashing it at her. I immediately yelled at him and told him don't do that!! you're going to make her cry. And she usually barks at him, and he gets dreadfully scared, so I told him... "why are you going to tease her like that if you don't like her barking at you'? I told him next time he teases her and she starts barking at him, I will not stop her from barking, so he can learn his lesson.

My husband and I have gotten really good at the hand block. I was at target when Snitch was a baby and a big guy comes to me and streches his hand to pet snitch, and there i went with the karate chop hand block and sternly said, Dont touch him!!! and he called me nasty and hella yeah im nasty when it comes to my babies. I am very nasty to kids who come running like while savages to pet the dogs. My husband tells people to control their spawns..lol. I love kids but some act worse than wild animals. I cant tolerate that. I dont care being known as the nasty lady with the little dogs.
