Aren't Yorkies lap dogs? Benji is 13 weeks old now and I do my best to keep him on my lap but he is so hyper he tries to jump off every time. Is this normal puppy behavior? He allows me to hold him for longer lengths of time when I put him on my arm and bring him close to my body (where he likes to nestle near my elbow)....but no luck with the lap thus far. Has anyone had a puppy like this that turned into a more affectionate lap dog later? I would really appreciate any responses. :) |
It depends on the personality of the dog. Puppies are usually rambuncious though thats part of being a puppy. Chachi would not sit on your lap as a pup. Now at 2 1/2 yrs old he will sit on My Husbands lap. He more likes to play though. Jewels has always been a lap dog even when she was a pup |
The hyperactivity will dissipate -- in 7 or 8 years!:p Seriously, these guys ARE hyper for the most part. There are exceptions as in all breeds, but they're generally very active little ones. Most of them DO like to be snuggled though. But it does depend on the dog. My boy has ALWAYS liked to lay on me. And if he is on the sofa or in a chair, he will be RIGHT beside me. And he will crawl up in my lap sometimes. |
Kodak may plop in my lap sometimes, but my 7month old is not having it. She'll lay next to me but she's not a lap dog yet. |
I think it depends on the dog how early the lap dog state starts. Lex it was immediate...being a man I guess that need for petting is about right ;0). Lulu is now 8 1/2 months and she is still so damn rambunctious. I can't get her to sit still long enough and let me have my way rubbing and cuddling her. She is 2 1/2 lbs of pure energy. |
I'm in the same place right now...Wobie is so hyper. He's getting better though. I think yours will calm down a little as he matures...but he may never be a true lap dog. |
The odds aren't sounding to good I will be so disappointed if he doesn't grow out of this. My husband finds the situation amusing because I am the one who insisted on getting a Yorkie companion for Chico and myself (although he thought a Min-Pin would be a better pick). I guess it is a little funny because in the beginning I wanted a puppy more for me than my American Eskimo but Benjamin is already favoring Chico.... and I guess I kinda deserve it. I love him just the same and maybe my husband a little less for finding it humorous. JK :D |
My experience has been that the boys become better lap dogs after they are neutered. |

OH wow! Diesel LOVES to snuggle! When I sit down he is right there snuggled up next to me. If I am standing up he will jump up and down till I pick him up and just hold him. Even as a pup he was never hyper. I can't really say that he is hyper at all. He loves to play but he isn't hyper. He is curled up next to me now sleeping. He is more playful now at 2 than he was as a baby. He isn't fixed either so I think every puppy will be different. |
Mine snuggle at night or when they are tired. I like rainy days because they just want to snuggle and nap all day. Loki likes to sit next to me but not ON my lap. Sammy comes over for kisses but then runs away. Sam will sit on your lap if she's tired, but NOT if she's in the mood to play. Yorkies are TERRIERS :D Even lazy Loki isn't a lap dog. |
Yorkies Are Definitely Lap Dogs 1 Attachment(s) At least in my experience, this is the 3rd yorkie I have, they are lap dogs. My two first yorkies were male and were less hyper than my female Kissie. But all three were all the time close to me. I don't know if it would be the same if i had more than one dog at the time. Perhaps when they have another dog to play with, the relationship with the mom is less strong. My Kissie is waiting the moment to see that I sit or I lay in the bed to be on me. She sleeps between the two pillows of my husband and mine, even if she has her own bed in our room, but she needs to be very close. That is the reason that if you want a pet, don't get a yorkie. A yorkie is a baby who wants to be treated like a real one and needs her mom all the time. YORKIES ARE THE BEST AND MY LIFE WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME WITHOUT MY PRECIOUS KISSIE. |

Nathan has his days!!!!:D at 8 1/2 months there are days when he will want to lay on my lap ..there is a catch though!!! Its usually to chew on my tee shirt or night gown!!! :) he does like to stay close and will lay on the couch next to me or on me!! :) Other days he wants no part of my lap,,he likes to be mr independent!!!:D |
Some are lap dogs, some are not My Bengi is not a lap dog. When he was a puppy he would never sit on my lap. Now at a year old he sits on my lap or by my side only after playing playing and playing. He did got less hyper, but still he's not a "lap dog". Truly "lap dogs" are usually like that since they are pups. a hyper dog might get a little less active but not that much. My mom has a mini pin and he's active with my yorkie, but doesn't like to play with people like Bengi does. He doesn't play fetch and he's not as smart as Bengi is. Also, yorkies are much more gentle. |
Jake loves to sit on my lap and loves cuddling most of the time, but there are other times when he wants to just run and play. It all depends on the personality of the dog. |
Mine was not a lap dog till after he turned a year old, then it was like someone flipped a switch and he can't get enough of lap sitting, so maybe your little one will change, I hope so. |
As most people are saying, it just depends on the nature of your dog. Some Yorkies love being in your lap and held, while some are more independent. Our Yorkie, Munchkin, couldn't sit still when we first got her. Now, she can fall asleep in our lap anytime. But she's also zippy and hyper at times. |
roman doesnt usually sleep im my lap....its kinda ironic i found this post right now because now is one of the few times he been on my lap. hes asleep though...he would never sit anywhere let alone on my lap for that long when he was awake lol |
I have 5 yorkies, 2 girls and 3 boys, and only one is a true lap dog...my Prissie, I believe she is a lap dog because she is my only momma dog, so she is very calm...all others will sit next to me when I sit down but they are usually chewing on something or playing with a toy, they don't necessarily want to be on my lap unless they want to take a nap, then they all fight for my lap. I always tell people if you want a lap dog, don't buy a yorkie. |
I thought they were lap dogs too, but mine really is not. She is not real hyper anymore at age 6, but she will sit with us for a short time but prefers to sleep on the pillows somewhere or near us. She loves to give kisses, but she is more like a cat, on her own terms. She always wants to know what is in it for her. I love cats, so it really isn't an issue, but where is my "lap dog"?;) (I do love my Yorkie!!!:aimeeyork) |
Hoping For More Lap Time Too! Zachary will be 15 weeks tomorrow and I wish he would like sitting on my lap more too. He has to be where he can see me all the time and lay at my feet but doesn't like to be held that much. He does lay by me on the sofa once and a while. He is better though than he was a couple of weeks ago. So, maybe in time, he will be less hyper. He is going to get neutered at six months so maybe that will help. Wishing you luck with your's. |
Otis went through a phase where he layed by himself most of the time, but now he's 3, and he's much more lovey. I sit in my chair when I'm on yorkie talk with a blankie beside me. It fills the hole between my leg and the arm of the chair and he snoozes. |
buahahahahaha:lol tears :lol tears :lol tears the title just made me laugh sooo much !!! my yorkie is like a energizer bunny that never runs low on power !!! If I got a 1$ bill for every time she jumps, I would become milionare in about a month LOL |
I have enough "lapdog" to share... Hope doesnt think she should have to walk, much less sit by herself.. LOL... she follows me like a lost soul if I get up and is ALWAYS BY me, she doesnt like to actually be IN my lap, just next to me, touching bootie I call it... she is sooo spoiled, my daughter fusses about how bad it is but I love every second! Now Tootie.. welllll, yea, no way! at night he wont sleep unless he is touching but all other times he is everywhere!!! love my babies! d |
I know what you are going through. My Yorkie is a 1 year and 3 months old and he is still not a lap dog. I think he hates for me to hold him. He likes for me to play with him, but that's it. He likes my husband better and will sit next to him and nap. Your baby is still young so he still may become that lap dog, you would like. |
