Are puppies suppose to bite???? Help, please!!

I was hoping someone would have some insight into why my 2 month old yorkie is starting to bite...now I know that puppies will bite b.c of their teeth but at night when everything is winding down, Marley wakes up and he starts to go crazy!! He will run and run and run, then when you try to hold him, he will start to nip and bite at you. I even noticed him trying to bit at our feet when he is playing. Will he grow out of this or are my kids making him crazy...I need some advice please....He is so good all day long and it seems that he is a night crawler and he flips out!!

Yes, they can bite Make sure he has plenty of chewie toys and offer him one of those when he starts biting. Also, when he tries to bite, say NO BITE loudly and firmly, and refuse to play with him for a while if he doesn't listen.

My three month old bites when we play, and I say "NO" and I ignore him for a few minutes. I gave him some rawhides and it keeps him busy for a LONG time. Mine is good during the day too but drives me crazy at around 2-3 AM when he wakes up.

Agreed. This seems to work the best. My puppy bites al the time too. It is just at that age.

If your puppy was taken from his mother too soon, he may not know proper "dog etiquette". they learn how hard to bite from playing with their littermates or their mothers.

when he bites a littermate too hard the other puppy will yelp and refuse to play.

My suggestion would be to yelp like a puppy would and push him away for a minute or two. Don't let him turn the pushing into a game, if necessary, leave the room and close the door for a short period of time.

Be consistent and you should have a well behaved puppy in no time.

If you have children that encourage the biting they must be instructed on what to do also.

This is something that every single person in my training class is having a hard time with. Our trainer says to ignore them and take the body parts they are biting (hands, face, toes) out of their reach. If they keep trying to bite then give them a little time alone in a puppy safe room.

My problem is that mine will bite me when I'm trick training him. He goes nuts over the treats and will bite my hand as I am giving him signals (he also bites/steals his clicker!) If I don't stop the session right then (because I am stubborn and want to teach him the trick) then he gets frustrated and starts focusing more on trying to grab the treats than learning the trick.

Ignoring him has been pretty effective though... he hates being ignored, and avoids doing things that make me ignore him!

OMG Peeka used to bite the *(^&% out of me when we first got him. After reading something similar to the dog etiquitte(sp?) that someone here mentioned, I started acting like a dog too. If he bit too hard, i'd flip him over on his back and say no(apparently like his mother would do..or so I read), while looking into his eyes. Then i'll ignore him until he calms down(like his littermates would do). He'd usually come back in a few minutes and give me a kiss after he's ran out some of his energy. He grew right out of this stage anyway at about 20or so weeks(we got him at 16 I think. Either that or we got him at 20 and he grew out of it by 24).

Wow I never realized how lucky I was till I read the posts here. Eury bites but stops soon as you say ow! But what makes me lucky is that my baby actually sleeps through the night. She's been trained from day one that when it's dark and she's in her x-pen with her bed it's time to sleep. She's quiet all night until my hubby gets up to get ready for work. Then he spends time with her.

What we've done to also encourage this behavior is we've made the x-pen at night very homey. She has her carrier/bed, her pee pad for when she can't hold it anymore, water, a little bit of food, chew toys and her favorite soft toys. So far the only night she's woken us up is right after we got her and she developed a mild case of bronchitis but fortunately after a week of meds she was fine.

Good luck with the training, it's hard I know and takes patience... lots of patience.

My granddaughter's Yorkie, Samantha Love, is almost 6 months old and we have had a hard time making her stop biting. She's just excited and playing, but we make her stop. Removing whatever part she's biting and saying a firm "no bite" is good and stop playing with her. I also say "Acckk" very sharply, sounds kind of like a sharp bark. That works well. She still begins to bite, but stops immediately. She's been with me and my two Bichons since Friday and it's funny how well she minds my female Bichon, Lacy. We woke up early this morning and Sammy wanted to romp around and play, while my two Bichons and I wanted to rest a while longer. I got up with her so she could go potty and then we went back to bed. I rubbed Sammy's tummy and snuggled her and kept telling her to lay down and be quiet, but she kept wanting to move around. Suddenly, Lacy sat up and growled very firmly and Sammy layed down and was quiet immediately. Lacy layed down again, too, and we rested for another 30 minutes or so. Lacy is very protective of Sammy and acts like her mom. Lacy keeps an eye on her and will let Sammy out of her crate if I don't watch her. Lacy is spayed, but she would have been a great mom. Sammy weighs 6.5 pounds now. She's about 50% potty trained, I'd say. It's hard to tell when she's at my house. She's been here several times, but it isn't home, of course, and she's not as relaxed and calm.

Play biting is so cute when pppies are small, but it sure gets old fast. Our male would play bite us when he was younger, and we would just stop playing with him and put him on the floor away from us. It only took a few times, but Harley learned quickly that we didn't like that behavior.

I had to wear slippers for about 4 months! Try spraying your feet, hands, etc. with Bitter Apple Spray. The ignoring, turning away, etc. is the most important part of it.

Dr. Ian Dunbar has a book in which he talks about teaching bite inhibition. It's very important to teach them early.

Don't worry - once you and the little one get through the first year, you'll be fine! Puppies are a lot of work, but it's worth it.

Kalina is very good about sleeping at night too. We put her in her crate at 10 and she sleeps until about 6AM when I come down and take her outside immediately. She can't wait to pee at this point and so far she doesn't go in her crate at all. BUT, she is definately a biter. I have bought her a million toys and I have tried the NO BITE or the OUCH. I have tried putting my finger cross wise into her mouth, near the back, but she still tries to bite. She also growls but only when she is wrestling with one of her toys. If I pick her up while she is growling she never tries to bite me, so I'm not sure how to handle that situation.

you might want to rethink putting her in her crate when she bites... her crate should be somehere she wants to go (should you need to put her in the car and bring her somewhere, or if you go out for a few hours) not somewhere that she thinks she is being punished. she will associate going in there with being bad and will start to hate the crate. When Layla was little i would yelp at her and if this didn't work i'd flip her on her back (a dominance thing) and look her in the eyes and say NO... she doens't bite at all anymore.. my dad will try and get her to bite when they "play" but she just mouths him.. it is too cute good luck
