Thank you for all of the information. Charlie goes into for a "big dental" next month, and the vet was going to microchip him at that time. However, if the chip isn't universal, then the process is a waste of time and money plus placing a foreign object in his body.

WHen I had Sadie done they actually did two chips for this reason. So I'm hoping that if it's ever needed one of them will read.

That's great she's covered but the whole thing just seems like it could be greatly improved with ONE scanner that reads all chips. I don't get the logic behind it with the technology of today - you'd think that would be already in play

when i had mine chipped (at the time of spaying & neutering), I had asked the vet about different readers and different companies. they told me if they are scanned, the scan will show there is a chip in there, even if it is not the same brand as the reader. therefore I opted to go ahead with the chips. I would never let them insert a chip unless they are put out. those things hurt.

Gracie has a Home Again chip. I checked wtih many dog owners I know and that one seems to be the one used most often in our area.

yeah our vet said this too, no matter what kind of chip is in there a vet or shelter would be able to tell its in there, they just can't read all of them. So most vets will keep the dog for a few days and if they hear nothing bring it to someone who reads different chips.'

I'm not so much worried about that as i am someone stealing her and not taking her anywhere that someone would check

Home Again seems to be the one used most in our area. I did check with our local Humane Society and they do have the universal scanner. I even took my to the shelter to make sure they scanned on their scanner and they did.

If you haven't been chipped yet, I would make some calls to local shelters and other vet offices and find out what brand they use. Make sure after you have been chipped to follow through with all the paperwork and verify with Homeagain or Avid that they have received all your information and your chip is on their records.

Oh, I totally agree. The whole thing is stupid. Almost makes you wonder what's the point if they can't all be read? Guess I've got the next best thing, though.

My dogs have HOME AGAIN chips ... one was done at the vet's office and one had been done before I got her.
I hope I never get to use it ... but at least I know it's there. At one puppy store I had them scan Freeway and it showed up.
If it has been done prior to you getting the pup, then it will be registered with the breeder and there is a paper trail.

Default Home Again microchips popular here

Home again chips here also ...
they also have tags with the numbers on it on their harnesses,
Home Again supplied them ...

http://petcare.suite101.com/article....identification

The most widely used microchip companies in the US are AVID and HomeAgain.
These companies are both widely recognized. Most veterinarians carry one or the other, but not both.
The local animal shelters are generally able to scan for both chips,
if they scan an animal with an AVID scanner and a HomeAgain chip has been inserted in the animal,
the scanner will alert the handler that a chip is present.

I just took a stray I found to the vet to get scanned for one today. They used two types of scanners- one avid, and I assume the other was home again. They didn't find one though.

My vets' HomeAgain reader reads my AVID chips just fine. I provide the chips and they implant them for $3. The needle is HUGE!!! I don't even give my own shots. Funny thing is I can give the horses their vaccinations and when we had a Golden, I could give him his vaccinations. It might be a size thing. I also like that the vets give the dogs a good go over with each vaccination visit.

Poor little guy...before long his ID tag will weigh more than he does!!!

Both of my Bichons are microchipped and they wear a little yellow tag on their collars with their microchip number on them and the phone number to call. The tags came from the microchip people. They have HomeAgain chips and my vet has a scanner that will recognize all chips.

Some other brands scanners will only read their own chips! Scary!!! But I know my local animal shelter has a universal scanner... you can purchace them as stand alones.

Ask your vet if they have one next time your in... and if they say no... ask them WHY NOT???? Insist they look into it! They really do listen to their customers... And call your local shelters as well and ask what they are using!!!! If you don't get the answer you are looking for write to the city! Or start a petition! Its not safe for them not to be using this technology when its avalible to them! And its CHEAP! Cheaper than housing dogs that could be back at home!

I have this one . Last week , we returned 2 dogs in their homes after scanning them . Owners were very happy to see the little ones coming back .
