Default Developing High Achievers

I was just checking out Breeders.net and saw where this one person had her puppies in what she called early Bio-sensory training and she gave this web-site.

Has anyone else heard of it before?

I will copy/paste what I found online:

The U.S. Military developed a program in the 1970's called "Bio Sensor." (Became publicly know and is often referred to as the "Super Dog" Program or Bio-Sensor Training for Dogs.) The program was developed to improve the performance of dogs used for military purposes. The basic premise of the program is that early neurological stimulation exercises could affect the performance of the dog. The Army's research revealed that early stimulation of the puppy from the 3rd day through the 16th day influence rapid neurological growth and development.

Bio-Sensory Training for Dogs improves the development of the puppy's neurological systems by early stimulation and stress. Five benefits have been observed in dogs that were exposed to the Bio Sensor stimulation exercises:

- Improved Cardiovascular Performance,

- Stronger Heart Beats,

- Stronger Adrenal Glands,

- More Tolerance to Stress, and

- Greater Resistance to Disease.

Its development utilized six exercises, which were designed to stimulate the neurological system. Each workout involved handling puppies once each day. The workouts required handling them one at a time while performing a series of five exercises. Listed in nor order of preference the handler starts with one put and stimulates it using each of the five exercises. The handler completes the series from beginning to end before starting with the next pup. The handling of each pup once per day involves the following exercises:

1. Tactile stimulation - holding the pup in one hand, the handler gently stimulates (tickles) the pup between the toes on any one foot using a Q-tip. It is not necessary to see that the pup is feeling the tickle. Time of stimulation 3 - 5 seconds.

2. Head held erect - using both hands, the pup is held perpendicular to the ground, (straight up), so that its head is directly above its tail. This is an upwards position. Time of stimulation 3 - 5 seconds

3. Head pointed down - holding the pup firmly with both hands the head is reversed and is pointed downward so that it is pointing towards the ground. Time of stimulation 3 - 5 seconds

4. Supine position - hold the pup so that its back is resting in the palm of both hands with its muzzle facing the ceiling. The pup while on its back is allowed to sleep struggle. Time of stimulation 3-5 seconds.

5. Thermal stimulation - use a damp towel that has been cooled in a refrigerator for at least five minutes. Place the pup on the towel, feet down. Do not restrain it from moving. Time of stimulation 3-5 seconds.

Personally I find it really interesting and I'm considering to try it out with a future litter. I have seen various sites claiming their dogs respond really well to it. Too bad I didn't see it was started on day 3 lol my current pups are 2 weeks old now. :/ lol

Janet if I remember correctly I believe Sarah from Walnut Hill yorkies has been using this on her pups.

She is a member here, I would contact her and ask her about it. Her username is WalnutHill.

Step 3 Elvis tried to bite me...then I read this was only for pups...sorry I couldn't help it. j/k

This sounds very interesting...sounds in the least like it couldn't hurt so why not right? At least the more handling the more the pup learns positive association with people and bonding forms. The cold towel seems a bit worrying if you don't monitor them warming up though. I took the time to look this up and see if there were any easily found safety warnings/issues...none found here.

Funny!!
I thought the cold towel was extreme but if no warnings/issues then I guess all is well.

I only did a basic Google search to see if anything easily popped up I'd want to talk to someone experienced with this and also do quite a bit more in depth research before getting into anything then consult a vet. also presenting all the information I had along with their medical expert opinion.

But superficially (IMO) a cold towel for 2-5 seconds once a day doesn't seem that nice or that harming, but I think we all have some basic knowledge of hot cold therapy and ice baths at extreme and temperature therapy has widely spread application in both physiological, psychological and neurological benefits.

Oh and no I didn't really try this on Elvis and no he didn't really try to bite me I just couldn't help but to entertainment myself at this late hour between reading over other threads on here researching some stuff.

My silky Captain went through this as a puppy - his breeder used this process with Captain' litter - where 3 of the 5 pups earned their championship and 1 other has points but never finished (moved away and family has financial issues). They also followed with their following litters with similar success.
