Chemical side effects of flea meds

I am very concerned about the chemical "side effects" of flea meds. Lexie is on Advantage and acts very strange the first day I put it on her. She is fine the next day and acts normal. But the way she initially reacts has started me wondering about how healthy it is for them to have these chemicals in their system. I don't want to find out down the road that they cause cancer, or other harmful side effects. Perhaps I am just being paranod, but it seems like there has got to be another way to prevent fleas. Does anyone know of the side effects of these meds?

I always used Advantage for my little ones and they never had bad reactions.

Do they act funny when you initially put it on? Lexie goes and hides, and then acts VERY subdued for the rest of the night.

One of my cats always reacts when I apply it. She jumps away from me and licks her lips a few times.

Many times, dogs can be allergic to those chemicals in flea meds...If they are allergic to it, I have read that they will have worse reactions each time you put it on them. Do a search for side effects on google, and you will come up with a bunch of information.
