so much Villette for thinking about us newbies and our babies. I personally appreciate any and all tips that anyone is willing to share. My baby boy will be coming home in about 2 weeks and I am concerned about making sure I am keeping him safe while loving him. Please keep the information coming. Just reading through the boards on YT is helping me to prepare for Maxx's arrival. I know once he gets here I'll probably be posting 101 questions

good for you Tammy ! That's exciting for you - I don't think I ever really saw a whole list of safety tips when I got my Chanel...and then again with Cheri - it's really helped me with what to be EXTRA careful doing - like shutting sliding and regular doors - who would think that could be a hazard !

Someone asked about puppy proofing ? I think the same things that apply to a baby that can crawl should apply to a puppy - Electrical Cords - NO HANGING Ropes or Drapery type Sashes - no medications left in reachable areas (and even UN-Reachable) they can JUMP !!

Recently I know someone who almost lost their yorkie to ASPRIN....it was on a table - but the yorkie went from the bed right on to her nightstand - so you just never know !

These come from my vet visit yesterday . . .

ACORNS can easily get stuck int he intestinal tract.

EDIBLE NYLABONES My vet recently had to operate on a pup that had a piece of edible nylabone lodged in his intestinal tract. They couldn't figure out what it was until the vet noticed a seam on the piece she removed. She went out and purchased an edible nylabone and put it in digestive enzymes to see how digestible it really is . . . she told me to STAY AWAY from those!

She said so far, she hasn't seen any problems from the Booda Bumps. Just be careful that your pup doesn't eat too much during one sitting as they will crap like a goose afterwards!

Another thing she warned me about is rope toys. She had a chi that tore bits and pieces off of it and eventually had to have surgery to remove a mass of string from its intestines. ewwwwwww

THANK YOU Lisa ! I didn't know that either about the edible Nylabones ! That's a GREAT one - I think I have some in my pantry...and on the rope toys - that makes alot of sense.....

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your friends yorkie. I will send prayers her way. Thank you for posting this helpfull information. We could all use the reminders I am sure.

Also be very careful getting in and out of the car. My brother-in-law, who has Down's Syndrome was getting out of their car and didn't realize their little Chi was jumping out too. He got caught in the door and it broke all of his insides up. Everyone was so heartbroken, and we just pray that my brother-in-law never realized what happened was his fault because he would never be able to understand it.

Great tips, red98vett!

Also, be careful when walking, as you never know when your Yorkie may be on your heels (a lot of Yorkie owners have learned to walk again, as in shuffle steps instead of full strides) and an accidental heel or kick could hurt your Yorkie.

We also try to be extra careful when carrying groceries, you never know if you have a leaky bag or something, a one pound jar can be very dangerous if dropped on a Yorkie.

Thanks for the Tips red98vett, and i totally agreed with fasteddie. I was accidently "step on" and "kick into" my yorkie because she maneuver too closed. Lucky she was alright. Now, i kept her in certain place when i do the house works. She also hurt herself a couple times, because she ran into the glass door.

YES !! I have done that back-whop right into my girls faces and sometimes...they can be following us SO CLOSE... we can trip, get tangled up and and land on them ...that actually happened to someones yorkie -

Also - while in the kitchen - normal common sense with these guys - they have to be involved with EVERYTHING we do - I was washing dishes once and dropped a KNIFE - it landed inches from one of mine - gave me a heart attack !

Thanks, Villette! Here's a tip on top of tips...print Red98Vett's tips for your kids! These are especially important for youngsters! I printed them out for my daughter and told her I was going to test her later! lol

lol...thanks...a Tip on top of the tips ? lol..say THAT 3 times fast - I think it a great idea to alert kids AND TEENAGERS that lots of accidents CAN be prevented if we use common sense....it can't hurt to go over them just to be safe...

I have more - WHEN USING A CRATE or PLAYPEN - keep towels off the tops and away from the sides where they can pull it in.....

They can shred the towel or woven blanket and become tangled in the long strands & it can wind around them and they can suffocate...Someone I know came home to their baby with a long string from a towel cutting off the circulation to his foot - it could have been his neck -

Someone asked about piggy ears - I think they CAN be potentially dangerous....I DO let mine have them once in a great while ...it's usually a bigger dog that can bite off pieces - yorkies tend to make them mushy - but WATCH them if you do give them - and make sure they aren't tearing off any pieces

Vilette awesome thread, thank you so much for this tips. SO many of the tips here I never though of before. Wow, I feel sorry for the pup and cat that die inside the dryer. Very sad.

I have a Bell on Gucci's collar that way I hear her when she is close by and Im extra careful but she tends to wlak by my feet.
