Default Cottony and so hard to manage

I have a little angel by the name of Armani. He's now 6 months old and he's so independent. We also have a 10 month old chihuahua who seems to think that she is the boss of everything. I have found that over training provided from myself, that these little furry bundles are extremely smart. I decided on speaking only spanish to my pup and raising him that way. I didn't want any particular stranger speaking my general commands at first in order to confuse him. This has worked great, and I appreciate all of the feedback from everyone here. It has been awhile since I posted anything.

I have a question though in regards to his coat. His coat now is cottony on his back but almost silky on his head. Yet it has its good and it's bad days. very hard to manage. In regards to general yorkie hair, is this going to stay this way? there was this puppy I saw in Petsmart when I was looking about 4 months ago with BEAUTIFUL hair, silky, fine, almost looked sporadicly placed on it's skin. Like braids. They wanted 1600$ for him. My jaw dropped and unfortunately as cute as he was I had to back down. When I came across my puppy at a breeders farm, they showed me the father, his hair was gorgeous, and the mother too. Although he was the last pup in the litter to go, I assumed his hair would eventually grow in as silky as his fathers. he was 12 weeks old then. Is he destined to have cotttony hair forever? How hard is it going to be to manage it? Any tips? I appreciate it.

My girlfriend has a yorkie that has a cotton coat, she keeps him in a puppy cut at all times because of this. I know that people here at YT rave about a product called Mink Sheen - I have ordered myself some to give it a try. You can try that, you have nothing to lose. Good luck

My girl has a cotton coat. I shampoo her with Biogroom then conditon with pantene. I leave the pantene on the hair about 20 minutes. This leaves her wth a very silky matt free coat. I do this once a week and her coat stays slky feeling. Try it

when you are done washing yours, how do you groom afterwards? hair drier and brush until it is dry?

Also, what are the prices for the biogroom run around?

I really think that posting pics would be great if you can

Their coats change SO much plus he's still a pup. I do believe even if both parents were silky coated they can produce a cotton coat.

I blow dry iin the winter but other than that air dry. The first time you do t you will probably need to comb through old matts but if you continue to condition like this once a week you shouldnt get any new matts. Jewels doesnt anyway. I always comb her hair through after I shampoo and condition itt. Here is a link to the biogroom. I get the bronze luster. http://www.vetvax.com/shampooscolorenhance.html

I have attached the following pics so you can see how he looks. It's not extremely cottony, but it's defintely not soft and silky.

Hes a cutie. His hair is definitely not thick and cottony like some have. He might have a modified coat(between a silk and a cotton) Thats what I believe My Jewels has too . Hers has the wave to it like he has

My Chanel is cottony....The only thing that has worked on her is Chris Christensen Systems Shampoo and conditioner and I use Sea Breeze oil on her after baths...it lays her hair down and really puts a shine on it....I don't have too much trouble with tangles but I keep her brushed and if I do see one, I brush it out asap...it's a full time job to keep on top of it but can be done...Be careful if you dress him...he's still got puppy hair and THAT can tangle pretty bad

just saw the pictures - he looks like he has nice hair ...and good luck !!

One of mine has a cottony coat! I tried to brush & brush an hour a day, used Johnson & Johnson no more tangles baby shampoo, vet conditioner... nothing! I now take him to be groomed and keep him in a short puppy cut! Its easier on him and me! he stays nice & matt free now, but he'll never be a show pup bc I cannot keep up with his hair! The one perk of a cottony coat is they are always sooo soft! I love just patting him, hes always like a little, warm soft blanket!

Thank you. I tell you though, aside from all the silky/wavy/cottony hair, I could literally care less at this point. He has been the most loyal canine I have ever had. Crazy to think yeah, I've owned a lapsa apsa, however you spell it..a s**tzu, a golden retriever, a hound, and a red nosed pitt...and a chi chi..and he has been the best out of all of them. Loyal to the end, and always ready to play!

From his pics can you tell what color he might end up leaning towards?

He is so adorable!!! Personally, I think he might be silk. He is too young and that is his puppy coat.

My boy looks similar to yours at his age.

I can post pics if you'd like?

Sure, I don't know anyone else with a Yorkie, and it's so hard to compare to the petstore breeds only cuz I think they screen out anything less than a 5 lb max silk haired tan and blue breed to sell.

I'd love to see pics!

Default I'm a nervous Nellie this morning...

My sweet little Maggie Moo also has a cottony coat. My other Yorkie, Munchie has always been silky, and I'm at my wits end with Mags. I've done everything I can think of, even resorting to Mane & Tail Horse Detangler for her snarls.

So off she went to the groomer for the first time this morning with two pages of instructions, especially for her not to come home looking like a Chihuahua. LOL

So we shall see what she looks like later today. Poor baby, I hate to do this to her, as I'm such a fan of a Yorkie in a full coat. I have a feeling that we're going to be spending lots of time at the groomer.
