Dawn- I am sure your babies will be just fine! When I spoke with my vet they said the same thing that Rini (whispersmom) did about the fact that often the pups that get sick don't have the strongest immune system which is why when there is an "outbreak" in a kennel all of the dogs don't get kennel cough.

Kennel cough

Kennel cough is most commonly associated with a bacterial infection caused by the organism Bordetella bronchiseptica. While it is hard to be certain in veterinary medicine when discussing statistics, it is estimated that 80 to 90% of the cases of kennel cough are due to this organism. The other 10 to 20% of cases are caused by a variety of other infectious agents, most of them viral. Kennel cough has been associated with parainfluenza virus, adenovirus and canine distemper virus as well as the Bordetella bacteria.

The incubation period from the time a dog is exposed until clinical signs appear varies depending on which infectious agent is the cause. In general it appears to be about 3 to 5 days with Bordetella. The infection tends to be mild except for a very harsh cough that often prompts owners to think that their dog "has something caught in his throat". In some dogs it can lead to pneumonia or more serious signs. Cough suppressants can be used to control the cough and antibiotics may be necessary for stubborn infections or to try to stop the spread of the bacteria in multiple dog households. It is probably a good idea to vaccinate dogs who will be exposed to large numbers of other dogs, such as at shows, obedience classes or the classic cause -- when left in kennels. The intranasal vaccine is pretty fast acting, providing some protection in as little as 5 days. The injectable version of the vaccine may provide longer immunity, though. Some vets use both to get maximum protection. We don't use either one routinely but give the intranasal vaccine to our patients who will be exposed to groups of dogs.

After reading this article I guess I was wrong about the incubation period and you may want to still get the intranasal vaccine and some form of pre-antibiotic like echinacea.

Ok after reading this now I'm scared that my dog has this. I thought that she just had allergies. If a dog has kennel cough do they cough constantly and does it cause sneezing too? Syd occasionally has sneezing/coughing fits. But I thought it was just dust or pollen going up her nose. Should I be concerned about kennel cough? She was just at the vet getting spayed and I guess she could have picked it up there.

That would scare the heck out of me. I would talk to your vet and get the vaccination as soon as possible. They are too small and can go down fast, is what my vet told me. By the way, Snoodles did real good with all her booster shots last week, no fever or aggitation , or anything! Yea! But truly, I wouldn't take the chance, the vaccine is worth it. What if she got sick, and you had to take her to the vet and they had a dog with it there? I say, vaccinate them.

My Pita had kennel cough when I got her, the breeder told me she had it but I wanted her sooo bad I bought her anyway. When she would cough it would sound like she was gagging but nothing ever came up she didn't sneeze tho. She also didn't have a runny nose or anything just a very annoying cough that took 2 months and 2 cycles of antibiotics to get rid of.

My daughter's chihuahua never got it, we tried to keep them apart but it was impossible after awhile.

I don't know if this helps but maybe it will ease your mind a bit.

...my comet will be 6 months tommorow, and he gets his last Bordatella booster shot on Saturday. I have yet to take him to the groomers for fear of him developing this virus. Even though groomers say that dogs need to have the bordatella vaccine, I doubt if they really screen people by asking for the dogs vaccination records. Vaccinating and using all precautionary measures will keep your dog healthier and happier in the long run. This has been my experience with my yorkie.

has anyone ever heard of a yorkie actually getting kennel cough from the nasal vaccine?

Well it has been 3 days and I havent seen or heard a sign of it. thank heavens!! I am keeping my fingers crossed.I am so worried for the little one.My vet is a really good guy who is more inclined to NOT give them a vaccine not needed.He never suggested that I give the bordatella even. He did ask if they would ever be staying in a kennel environment and I said no. I did call him this amand they said the dogs were in excellent shape and that they probably will be fine. Soooo we will see.
To the person who thought her pup had allergies it sounds more like reverse sneezing what you describe. I think you are ok
