| ![]() I guess I will go against the majority here and say this lady sounds like she is from the old school. I used to have a neighbor that kept his dog outside, never let in. That just killed me. All my zoo live in the house - even the big 100 lb. dog. Sure he loves to spend time outside but he is an inside dog. My kittens have started venturing into the backyard also. But they are inside cats. My vet bills would make the average person roll over and die. Add to that grooming bills, and all the special treats, beds, and babysitting when we vacation. But my point is that this guy honestly didn't see anything wrong with keeping his dog out 24/7. He was raised that you never have pets in the house. Dogs don't need to see a vet, especially for regular maintenance stuff like shots, check-ups, teeth cleaning, etc. I always felt so bad for the dog. But this guy felt his dog was just fine and loved him dearly. Always had food and water, a good warm dog house for winter and rain storms. Convincing this lady that she is a neglectful owner will probably be next to impossible. Not everyone loves and cherishes their pets and treat them as one of the family. Not everyone believes that animals need to be bathed and combed as animals wouldn't do this for themselves out in the wild. Nor would they clip their nails. Yet, as we know, animals in the wild wear their nails down so Mother Nature does take care of them. So, in this lady's defense, she was probably raised that dogs are just pets. Not members of the family.

| ![]() I would have ask right then if I could have her so I could get her medical attention she needs. I wouldn't offer money at first. I'd just tell the lady that you would be willing to spend the $200.00 plus on getting the teeth taken care of and anything else it needs if she would give her to you. Since the lady never took it to a Vet. but once, then it's my guess that little dog isn't even spayed. This is animal cruelty. |

| ![]() I think it sounds like you were ment to live next door to those people. That poor Yorkie needs your help, cause it's not getting the care it deserves from it's owners. Keep trying to help the poor thing, it needs you. ![]() ![]()

| ![]() I woud try this. I said that to an older gentleman once when I met him walking his dog and he told me that his wife actually wants to get rid of the dog and they gave it to me. They were unable to properly care for the dog because of illness.

![]() You said they love their pet. Maybe you could help by educating her on better care for her yorkie. check into less expensive ways to help her attain the health issures, (shots and etc). You bathed her yorkie without asking and she didn't get mad? does she work?

| ![]() Just as an aside here -- I would not take it upon yourself to bathe, groom, and trim the nails of other people's dogs without permission as a rule. I love mine and take good care of them but there probably are times when someone could come upon them needing a bath or a bit of nail trimming (true, not to the extent you write about but still....) and if someone else took that liberty with them I would be fuming! If you felt the dog needed that attention due to sanitary and health reasons, then you should still ASK the adult owner first. JMO. As to the lack of medication for the dog .... was it an optional thing? What medicine? What is the condition? Is it neglect or actually going to harm the dog further without the medicine. If money is the real stumbling block for the woman, maybe offer to pay for the meds if you are really concerned only for the welfare of the dog. But I would not try to usurp ownership unless she grants it freely. However, if actual neglect or health endangerment is really an issue, I would first let her know what you think, and if she did not take action, then report to the authorities.

| ![]() Wanted to add about them feeding Alpo. We adore our dogs and have always treated them like family. But my 14 year old dachshund was raised on Alpo. She is the healthiest dog I know for being an old gal. Her coat is still shiny and sleek, she has good teeth, good eyes and hearing. When I got the Yorkies, I became more aware of the availability of human grade dog foods, and did switch to premium foods. I now feed all 4 of mine Canidae -- but I cared no less for them when I fed Alpo. I still do not know that it was bad for them as Katie seemed to thrive on the stuff. But they are worth the best, so I will stick with premium now. I just did not always know what a difference there was. Maybe it is the same for your neighbor.

| ![]() Update.... Mimi & Timmy's party was yesterday and everyone had a blast. I will have pics of all later. Miss Candy is starting to open up...she actually followed me everywhere I went and then started to play with the rest of the crew. She's kinda snippy but was doing great yesterday. She doesn't like when other doggies get in her face.....all the bigger babies didn't go near her...lol I'm not being pushy with the lady at all. All I know is that they are not educated and I believe they love their dog. I went and bought food for her yesterday and gave it to the little boy....this little boy is the best!!! He is so thankful for everything. When I gave him the food he said..you are so nice. For now I'm going to be there for them and educate them. If that doesn't work then I'm going to ask but I have to have more conversation with the mom first and get to know her a little. The reason why I groomed her was because I couldn't stand to see her nails curling into her paw pads. If some think I'm wrong then you are entitled to your own opinion...I would not only do it for her I'll do it for any other animal. The lady was so grateful and wasn't mad. Don't get me wrong when I was grooming her I did think that there was a possibilty that she would be upset but she wasn't. I did it and its done and I feel proud. I'll post some pics later!!! |
