Should I risk getting a Yorkie when my apartment doesn't allow pets? I really badly wanna get a Yorkie. I'm a stay at home wife and have all the time in the world to take care of a Yorkie puppy and give it the love and attention that it needs. Theres only one problem. We just got a apartment that doesn't allow pets and the manager supposedly lives right above us. I don't know yet b/c we havn't moved in yet. Do you guys think I should just wait to buy a puppy when my husband deploys in 2008 or take the chance and get one now? Last time I had a Yorkie she didn't bark much at all but that was that one Yorkie. Do other Yorkies bark alot? Do you think theres a good chance I'd get caught? I'd be with her or him all the time so it would get lots of attention and hopefully not bark much. I know this is a stupid question but I've been debating on risking it for a few days now but want some more advice on what I should do. Thanks, Christen |
I think it would be a very bad idea. You will need to take her out and how will keep people from seeing her. She will bark, your neighbors might see her, you will always have to worry... and then what will you do when you do get caught and have to get rid of her... What happens to her then? Will she end up in a shelter? I say if you really want one that badly find another apartment that does allow them. It is just too risky and not stable for the little one. Kim |
I know your probably right Kim! Except she wouldn't end up in a shelter. I'd never do that. I'd probably move out before I even got rid of her and if I had to get rid of her she'd go to a good home. I'm not that Cruel! Thanks for the advice though. Christen |
Yes My yorkies bark like most do and you wouldnt be able to hide them. I would wait |

Welcome to YT. Alaska members are few and far between around here. In fact, I think it's just you and me right now. It's depressing. Everyone else goes to Yorkie meetups and lets their Yorkies play with other Yorkies, but the only YTers with Alaska connections are former Alaskans who go on and on about how much they miss it but never return with their Yorkies. But I'm not bitter. OK, back to reality. Sorry. How about asking your apartment manager if they will make an exception for a tiny dog? Show him/her some pictures of Yorkies. It's not as though they tear up the furniture of anything. Anyhow, don't give up. And if you get one, come find us for a play date! |
Christen10, so sorry that you have to give up your dog. My ex-brother in law live in a place where they didn't allow dogs and he had his dog with him, but his dog was old and died couple of month ago, in the other hand a friend of mine had to give up her dog because they didn't allow to have pets. Some yorkies barks a lot others don't Phoebe my yorkie has her days but usually she is quiet. The perfect dog is waiting for you in the correct time ;) be patient:aimeeyork :love-hug3 |

Now I'm in Alaska and lonely as ever. I figured a puppy would be just the thing to cheer me up. yeah seems a fair idea, all you can do is try, and it wont hurt, when people think of dogs, they think huuggee dogs, they dnt think that people may want a small baby... i would definatly try, or at least find the reasons for no dogs, it may be that someones allergic? just doesnt like them, or has never even considered that anyone would what a 'small' dog :) let us know what happens? |

I would do what the other YTalker is advising. Go talk to the manager, does your apartment allow cats ? Yorkies are smaller than cats (well, most :D ) and some landlords allow pets smaller than 25 lbs. No Yorkie would get bigger than that... But it's always worth to ask, good luck! |
Why not volunteer at your local Humane Society or animal control place? They need dog walkers, etc. Maybe this would help until you could live in a place that would allow a dog. It is tough when you have always lived with dogs not to have one.:( As hard as it is and unless your manager allows it, it just wouldn't be fair to the dog if you got him, loved him and then had to find him a new home because you couldn't keep him. It would break his heart to have to go live with someone else along with yours. |
hey Christen10! glad you were able to start a thread ... about your problem, ask your apt manager! it doesn't hurt to ask ... i mean if you are going to be with your puppy all the time and training and stuff ... hopefully the apt manager would understand. just have a talk with him/her, you never know .. and maaaybe to show how willing you are, if the apt manager still hesitant you could always offer to put a deposit down for any potential damages (carpet and stuff). i know apts that allow pets usually have an extra deposit required ... so that's always another option/incentive to the apt manager to allow you to have a little yorkie ;) goodluck!!! |
I say no, if there is a no pet policy and the manager finds out you have a yorkie they will either kick you out or tell you to get rid of the yorkie, then what would you do? If you say you would move out if you got caught with one, why not move out now then buy a yorkie? That would be the best, then you wouldn't have to worry about getting caught . Yorkies are yappers so you definately couldn't hide one even though they are small. Anyway I hope it all works out and you get you a yorkie in the end. |
I would definitely not get a yorkie and bring it into an apartment that doesn't allow pets. Something will happen sometime and you're pet will be caught. Are you waiting for on base housing so it will just be a short while in this apartment? If not, there must be plenty of other places that allow pets in Fairbanks, maybe even renting a small house? Try looking further out maybe down by North Pole or Moose Creek. :^) |
From personal experience I would say "no". I had to live temp. at an apt. a few years back before we closed on our house. I had two little dogs (one only 3 lbs.). It seemed no one would clean up after their dogs. Poop everywhere. Yet, because I had two dogs I was always blamed for all the poops out there in the common areas. I remember getting so stupid that a lot of times when my 3 pounded would poop in the tall grass I couldn't even see where it landed. Yet, I would take my paper towel and at least "pretend" that I was picking up my microscopic tiny worm sized poop. LOL. Of course while I was doing that, right next to me was a horse size poop that no one had cleaned up. Apartments are difficult to live in when you don't have pets, but give one of those nosey neighbors something to complain about and you have made their day. LOL |
i used to be a resident manager and i say NO. they can evict you which will give you a bad credit score. please do not risk it. a bad credit score will follow you for years. it is not worth it. |

The rules should be on the papers you signed, so it may be difficult pursuading the landlord to let you have a puppy. Can you get your deposit back and look for a place that does allow pets? |
Ok, here is my two cents. I used to work as an apartment manager. We had a no pets policy. At one point we decided to allow small pets. Cats and Dogs under a certain weight. Well....that did not go over well. Tenants completely took advantage. They we went back to the no pets policy, but allowed the cats and small dogs from when we had the pet policy in affect. The large dogs had to leave. This caused a fuss for the new people moving in. "They have a pet, we can't we!!!" And would try to sneak them in, and then we would have to send notices. I would take to you LL about it. If he says no, then, do not sneak a pet of any kind in. It will only cause problems. For you, and for them. And, you will most likely either have to find a new home, or re-home your little guy. IF they allow it, make sure you don't "show off" your pet. Although....I hope they let you get a little guy..... |

Ummmmmm, at least until May 1st, then we are moving to Georgia. :( And very unhappy about it to say the least! Here's what happened where we are renting. Our lease says only one pet. We had a Golden already and I found myself really wanting a smaller dog after my Maltese went to live with my grandmother after her little one died. She really needed the companionship. So I went about looking for Yorkies and then just approached my landlord with it and she said sure! I was surprised but it just goes to show that it surly can't hurt to ask! Kim |

I live in a building where pets are not allowed . The manager is a big animal lover and made an exception for me as Royce is tiny but he warned me that if there are complaints from neighbors ( ie barking ) then I will have to deal with that ....eventually two of my neighbors complained the first one I went an explained to her that Royce barks in the morning when I leave for work because he has separation anxiety and im dealing with it in fat i hired a dog behaviorist a couple of months later the second neighbor called management and complained ...I went to see the manager and I made it clear that I will never ever get rid of my dog ...luckily the manager is very undestanding and I have a good relationship with him he simply told me notto worry about the complaint and that he will deal with it ....since then thank god no one complained . |
