2 Pounds at 8 Weeks? Normal? So only 16 more days left...Yes, after a long wait, I can actually talk in terms of days and weeks... I just talked to my breeder yesterday and he told me that my baby boy is about 2 pounds, 3 inches high and 5 inches long...Now, I have a couple of questions. Is it too much for a Yorkie to weigh 2 pounds at almost 8 weeks? Do the height and length sounds OK? I dont know how much an 8 week of should weight, I just want to know if he is normal. Thanks! |
No, that will be a pretty much standard size yorkie. Chloe weighed 2lbs at 8 weeks. She is now 6 months old today and she weighs 4lbs 10 oz (well last week she did). |
Awww I must've missed that you decided to get a Yorkie pup. Congratulations!! As for the weight, it seems to be on the bigger side. My pup weighed about 1.5 at 10 weeks and ended up weighing almost 6 lbs now, at 9.5 months. I know they all gain differently and you can't really assume much, I think judging by the size of the parents and grandparents you might get an idea. As for the inches... I can't really tell... sorry |
As for the weight, it seems to be on the bigger side. I agree, it does seem to be on the bigger side as Lucy weighed 1.7 at 12 weeks. She now weighs about 8lbs at a year. It depends on the parents. How big are they? Were you looking for a yorkie on the smaller side, if not, it should be about average! Good Luck and Congratulations :) !! |
Lacy weighed 1.1 lbs at 10 weeks and now at 16 weeks she weighs about 1.4 lbs...your pup is on the bigger size but depending on his parents he could be standard size or not.. Stacey and lacy:animal36 |
romeo will be 8 weeks friday and at 6 weeks he weighed 1.6 pounds. i can not wait to find out what he weighs this friday because everyone remarks on how he has gained a little weight. he is so adorable.:D |
When I got Kona at 7 weeks she was about 2 pounds - I think maybe 2.2. Now she is just over a year old she is maybe 4 pounds - she hasn't been weighed in a while. Bernie was a little less than 2 pounds at 12 weeks, now he is 10 months old and he is probably 5.5 pounds. He is certainly all muscle. I would have thought that Kona would weigh more than Bernie since she was 2 pounds so much younger than him, but it didn't work out that way. I wouldn't stress. They will be loveable and playful no matter what! Enjoy! |
It sounds "normal" but on the larger side. On the other hand, my Kiki weighed over 2 lbs at 8 weeks, and now at one year old, she is barely over five lbs. So it's true that they just grow at different rates sometimes! |
I Think Two Pounds Is A Very Good Weight |
i think its a waiting game if you dont mind a larger one then just enjoy your new puppy congrats |
LOL I think it is a good weight. Diesel was 1.9 at 9 weeks. Now he weighs right at 5 pounds and he will be 2 in July. I think they are all different. I don't think he is on the bigger side at all. You should also look at the parents to get an idea on how big he might be. |
size It depends on what size adult you are hoping and paying for...when the breeder says ABOUT 2 pounds..that can mean 2 1/4 even 2 1/2 to some breeders...if you want a 7 pounder, then that sounds good, if you want and are paying for a tiny, it is too much..I think 2 full pounds at 8 weeks results in a nice size pet... |
2 lbs is normal. Hootie and Hobbs were both 2lbs when we brought them home at 8 weeks and now both of them are 3lbs fully grown. |
See that is my point. All dogs are different. You have to really look at the parents. I don't think that because he weighs 2 pounds at 8 weeks that there is any guarantee that he will be "big'. |
size I have never had a puppy weigh 2 pounds at 8 weeks and only grow to 3 poiunds..so do not count on this puppy stopping at that weight..it is NOT the norm..they tend to triple the 8 weeks weight..and double the 12 week weight...I do not find the 8 week rate to be as accurate...12 wk rarely fails for me.. |
I have to wonder why 2 pounds at 8 weeks is not the NORM? What is so wrong with a Yorkie weighing in at 2 pounds? I just don't see 5 or 6 pounds being big. Just really curious thats all. I think it is a good healthy weight. |
2 pound at 8 weeks is on the larger side my brownie was that and when he loses a couple pounds his good weight would be 15 pounds i think 2 pounds at 12 weeks would be a different story |

so am i! like you i don't think of 5-6 pounds as being large either and can't imagine it being a problem. |
Sounds like he's going to be bigger to me...there's a chart on here somewhere. It might be at yorkiepassion.com (I think that's the site). My girl is only 2lbs 2oz at 4 1/2 months and she's expected to be about 4lbs. |
my boy was tiny when we first got him and now hes 5pounds at 6months but hes a standard size and his dad was as big as he is now when he was buddys age maddy she weighs 1 pound exactly and shes 8 weeks but she was a very tiny baby and was the runt but shes healthy now |
Who knows what's normal:) but my last yorkie weighed 1.8 lbs. @ 8 weeks and at 12.5 years ended up at 5 lbs., and my new yorkie Chase weighed 2 lbs. @ 8 weeks and 2.38 lbs. @ 12 weeks so I think MAYBE 2lbs. could be considered normal. |
size Was it my post you were questioning as to the norm...there is nothing wrong with 2 pounds at 8 weeks...what is NOT the norm is a puppy who weighs 2 pounds at 8 weeks and only grows up to be a 3 pound adult as in the previous post...2 pounds at 8 weeks is quite normal for a Yorkie who is not going to be a tiny... |
Like Pat said, 2lbs at 8 weeks is normal, but hard to tell what they will be at their adult weight. According to the charts and this is just an estimate, a 2 lb puppy at 8 weeks should weigh around 6lbs. |
Your puppy is perfectly normal . |
skoshi weighed 2 lbs at 10 wks. i dunno how much now tho |
Normal size for 8 weeks. My dogs have never followed the yorkie growth charts. Gracie weighed 2 lbs, 3 ounces at 8 weeks. At one year, she weighed 4 1/2 lbs and today (she's 3 years), she weighs 5 1/2 lbs. I can't remember London's weight. But she currently weighs around 6 1/2 lbs. Dallas weighed 1 1/2 lbs at 8 weeks and at 5 3/4 months, he weighs 3 1/2 lbs. Your best bet is to look at the parents. Everything about these dogs involves genetics. Don't get me wrong...a tiny pup that comes from average sized parents could end up to being large and vice versa. Pat is right, though. Don't expect a 2 lb 8 week old pup to only get to 3 lbs. Not going to happen. |

You're right Pat....the only thing you can really depend on is that these lil Yorkies can make a liar out of you...... |
I think every pup is different, so to say anything is normal or not normal doesn't make sense. My girl was barely 1lbs at 12 weeks, and at 6 months was barely 2 lbs and all of a sudden went through a HUGE growth spurt and by 9 months she was 4 lbs 9 oz. These babies are all different, it really depends on their parents. Some pups stop growing sooner than others. |

One of my stud's Sire & Dam were very standard size (6-7 pounds) and from a very standard sized pedigree.....I fought to get him to 4 pounds (he's very fine boned). When I took him into the ring at age 2 he was just under 5 pounds.....He's 4 now and 6 pounds 2 oz. Some just take longer to mature out. Actually he'll be 4 in May |
