go back and read she wasnt saying that our babies arent normal lol |
All yorkies are different. Just go to the photo gallery section to prove that. It is insane to even sit here and discuss what is "normal" and what is "abnormal." When it comes to yorkies, there is hardly a norm. |
I believe she was saying, that in your instance of a 2 lb at 8 weeks turning out to be 3 lbs full grown, is not the normal growth rate. There is nothing wrong with your yorkies, they are beautiful.. That growth rate, just dosnt fit the normal rate of growth is all. |
Look at my BIG GIRLS... Penny weighed 2.5 lbs at 9 weeks and 8.5 lbs at 20 weeks, go figure she now weighs 10.2 lbs... |

I think that sounds a little big. Do you know the weight of the parents? Have you had a chance to see them? |
It sounds a little bigger than Ralfie (he was 2 lbs at 10 wks? somewhere around there) but didn't grow much for awhile after, so as everyone else has said, every yorkie is different and look at the parent to estimate the adult weight. Not to change the subject, but I couldn't help but notice you live in Bethesda!!! I'm from Potomac- across the street from Great Falls Park! Once you get your puppy, I'm thinking YT playdate?! :p :aimeeyork |

Thanks for all your great responses! As I never owned a Yorkie before, believe me I treasure all feedback! I thought 2 pounds at 8 weeks was a little bit on the larger side but I really do not mind...My breeder never promised me a teacup or anything...I met the parents of my baby boy before and they seem very little but hey they are Yorkies so regardless they all appear small...As long as my boy is healthy, I really do not mind him being a bit bigger than usual :) I was just curious to see what was the 8 week old yorkie weight criteria :) You guys rock! Thanks! |
One more thing...My breeder told me that when fully grown my puppy will be between 4-10 pounds...Dont you think that is too wide of a range? Am I going crazy? I think I am just so excited that I over analyze things... |

1 Attachment(s) Sparky weighed 1 lb 6 oz at 6 weeks. 4 weeks later he had gained to 3 lb 5 oz. 4 weeks later he was 5 lb 10 oz. Yesterday (4 weeks later) he had a visit with the vet and he weighed 7 lb 8 oz. So based on the premise that they double the 12 week weight, my little man will be about 10 to 11 lbs. His Mom weighed 7 lbs and his Dad weighed 5 lbs, but it looks like my little "porker" may outdo them. And that's fine with me, because he is such a high quality boy. He has the best personality and is perfect for me and my family. He was the bigger one of the litter, and was picked out by my Pastor's wife. He was a gift from them and my family. He is my first Yorkie, and I'm paranoid about his size as it is (I'm used to 50 - 100 lb dogs). But the next one (and ohhhhh there will DEFINATELY be a next one) I would like it to be smaller. |

What she is telling you is she in her round about way, is she can't predict size. Anything can happen. |
i agree that anything can happen but i would hope that the person i bought a puppy from would be able to give me a better answer than "between 4-10 pounds"! we met romeo's parents and both are small yorkies - the dad is smaller than the mom! the lady told us that he would get no bigger than 4.5 pounds - just like all of her puppies from their litters. none have weighed more than that. |
I believe what yorkierose meant was that only gaining 1 lb. after 8 weeks is not average. And as everyone said you can only guess. My Katie, Max and Toby ended up being pretty close to what the weight chart estimated from their 12 week weight. Most people figure doubling their 12 week weight but as everyone has said, that is just an estimate. All dogs are different. My Katie is heavier than Max but to look at them Max looks bigger. He is a little leggier and has more hair. Katie's brother Toby more than doubled his weight. You must also remember that weight is not everything, some dogs can gain weight and get a bit pudgy......doesn't mean they are out of standard, just fat! :D :D |
Quote:
As stated in the standard: Must not exceed seven pounds....that's still a small dog....nothing in the standard states 4-7 pounds..... |
Who is able to say what a yorkie will be at an adult stage?? I can't and I won't even try sometimes. I have this baby boy who was 2lbs 13 oz at 8 weeks, he is now almost 11 weeks and I weighed him yesterday and he is 2lbs 15 oz. So according to the weight charts he should have been around 8 -9 lbs as an adult and now since he hasn't put on much more weight he will be around 7lbs.. ?? Go figure?? I was more concerned about the 3" high (tall) that is tiny.. is this possible?? Do you realize a dollar bill is 2 1/2 inches tall.. Is it possible that a 8 week old baby is only a 1/2 inch taller then a bill??? |
OK one last question...Do male yorkies generally weigh more than the females? otherway around? or it really depends on the puppy? |
Quote:
Depends on the line.... No hard statistics. |
I think the rule is you doube their weight at 12 weeks or triple it at 8 weeks. So that would make an 8 week old 2 pound pup about 6 pounds full grown. That is according to my vet and all of the charts I have looked up:) |
After reading these threads, I have to think that it is just too hard to tell. My Timmy was 1 3/4 pounds at 9 weeks and he is 3 1/4 lbs. at a year!!! |

i agree! you just have to wait and see but i do trust my breeder and seeing the mom and dad was enough for me. |
I know my baby isn't purebred (she's a Yorktese/Morkie or whatever!) but just to show you how they can grow so differently: At 8 weeks, Ceiba was 2lbs and her brother, Ace was 2.2lbs. (He's always been an ounce or 2 heavier). At 12 wks, she weighed in at 2.11lbs and he at 3.9lbs. They were both eating the same (crappy!) food. (I was scared to change her food so quickly). Not sure why the huge difference in weight! So I guess that even in littermates, the growth rates can vary quite a bit! Just my 2 cents ;) |
my baby was 2lbs 9oz when i got him at 8 weeks and now at 1yr he's 7lbs 9oz |
Even the charts are off sometimes, every weigh-in at the vet (about every 2 weeks or so) I moved the 'official' adult weight up and up - just by calculating from his weight as a 9-10 week old pup, he would be around 4 lbs fully grown. He was gaining a full pound each month but is far from fat. I can pick him up with one hand, still - 6 lbs - he's small, just seems 'filled with rocks' LOL |
My Ozzie must've started eating golfballs somewhere along the way. At age 9, he weighs 13.5 pounds! And he was 3 pounds, 3 ounces at 11 weeks when we brought him home. |
my 2 boys I got 2 boys from the same litter. One was 2lbs at 9weeks, and the other was 2.2lbs at 9 weeks. At 15 weeks one was 3.8lbs and the other was 4.4lbs. Now fully grown, the 3.8lb one (dexter) is 5lbs on the dot but my other boy (fletcher) is a whopping 8lbs!! :D |
Lili was 2 lbs Lili was 2 lbs at 8 weeks, She will be 1 yr old on the 29th and weighs 6 lbs. She is very healthy, happy and active. What really matters is that she is loved and well cared for. She doesn't know how uch she weighs, In fact she thinks she's a BIG dog!:aimeeyork |
My anna You guys are making my anna sound real small she is 16 weeks today and last week when i took her to the vet she only weighed 1.9 lbs with her clothes etc on :S |
