Dog Food Choosing OK HI EVERYONE I WANTED TO KNOW IF Eukanuba BRAND IS GOOD AND DO ANY OF YOU USE IT I HEARD IT WAS GOOD BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR THOUGH ON THIS FOOD BRAND.:) |
sorry to burst your bubble.. but not a great food at all. as a rule of thumb.. any dog food you can get at the grocery store or a place like PetSmart is not quality food. do a search on here and you'll find some great suggestions for food. We feed Fromms. other good brands are Canidae or Wellness.. Life's Abundance... |
food oh I though that it was good for different reasons the main reason is that it's what the akc use in there ads and things. ok thanks |
Atsome Petsmarts you can get Nutro and thats a good food. They also have royal canin and thats a pretty good food |
Here's a good way to find a quality food for your pup. Look at 4 star and 5 star foods...Good luck! http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_f...ndex.php/cat/1 |
Also, you can check for the eukanuba and see how many stars it gets and why...Good luck! |
I was feeding Nutro Puppy and my vet recommended I switch to Science Diet. What do you guys think? I also switched the wet food from Ceasar Puppy to Science Diet |
thanks thanks for all of your help if you have any more brand that you what me to know about tell me and get your friends on this post too to help me.:) :) :) :) |
Wow! What an intersting site (the one that rates dog food quality). I'm shocked...here I thought my dogs were eating high quality food (Royal Canin) and it was down in the 3 star category(still not bad compaired to dog chow I guess). The only problem is, I have never seen or heard of the supposed 6-star foods. Where in the world do you get these foods besides the Organic Store in Northern California? :D |

reading the reasons why shocked me as well. I am going to have to find something in the 5-6 stars. |
you can try to order online... i think that the 6 star are very hard to find... we feed a 5 star and i feel good about it... Buddah.. take a look at the ranking... sadly science diet (a food many vets sell) is not high quality and what makes me even more mad is that many dog shows are sponsered by Purina or Eukanuba... which is giving people the wrong idea that they are quality foods. |

Now I need to find a new wet food as well. How many of you feed wet food? Do you think you need to or should? |
You can buy Natural Balance (by Dick Van Patten) at Petco and it's an excellent food that's not too expensive. California Natural, Innova, Wellness, Canidae and Nature's Variety are also excellent foods...just to name a few. |
well sadly they only recommend it because they will make money from selling it :( you do not NEED to feed wet... dry is better for their teeth... yorkies tend ot have bad teeth so anything to help is great.. layla gets about 1 tsp of a quality (wellness) wet food in the morning with her missing like as a treat.. and that's it! good luck with your choosing! if you can find a very small locallly owned petstore.. chances are GREAT they have high high quality food... we feed Fromms.. and a friend of mine feeds GO.. also a VERY high quality food... if you want me to send you a sample of each before you buy a big bag PM me and i'll send it to you :) |

Have you heard of I think it is called balance. Its like a raw food you keep frozen and just slightly heat/defrost before feeding in the place of wet food. It seems like basically raw meat. |

Don't be too upset with your vet. They are not dog nutritionists. I have talked with my vet at length about foods and she was very honest with me. She shrugs her shoulders and says you don't get much information about animal nutrition at vet school. LOL I try to educate my vets a little with each visit! |

I did some research and found a local doggie daycare that sells Solid Gold. I'm calling them tomorrow. I'm intersted in the "Just a Wee Bit-Bison" food because it has tiny bites. My dogs will only eat very small kibble. I wonder if they would like that...also a plus: a 4 pound bag of the wee bits is $8.94. I pay the same for a 3 pound bag of Royal Canin. If you have it shipped, the shipping is $10.00, so I'm hoping this local place has it for a smaller mark up. |

From what I have heard, 6 star foods are not recommended for yorkies because the protein content is soooo high. I was told that 5 star and 4 star foods are the way to go :) I agree with chattiesmom...Most vets recommend science diet, purina, those types of foods, so don't be too upset with them. Any of you who are looking to feed Natural Balance or Solid Gold, they carry those at Petco now. And if you email the people at natural balance and ask for some samples, they will send you some. The food I'm looking at feeding my little one is Merricks Grammy's Pot Pie...we've tried the canned, and she absolutely loves it...They sell it at Pet Supermarket. We were wanting to try the dry food too, but they were out, so I'm waiting until they get it in stock. |
I feed Life's Abundance and Canidae..........I get the LA online and Canidae at a feed store nearby. |
all of the 6 star foods are very high protein too much for our little yorkies, it is high protein and has no grain or wheats, good for agility dogs etc. |
I feed Bailey Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul and its a 5 star and its not expensive so you can try that brand they even have the little $1.99 sample bags to try...... Bailey seems to like it :) |
I feed Blue Buffalo because of the convenience of finding it a Petsmart. It was recommended by a lady that studies dog nutrition. Of course she preaches raw feeding first, but she said if I had to choose something from Petsmart, Blue Buffalo was a good choice. From the website referrenced on this thread, it received a 4 star rating. |
I feed Bengi Natural Balance Potato & Duck. He seems to like it better than other foods I tried. He's a picky eater, so I haven't found one that he can devour like boiled chicken. I think Natural Balance is 4 stars and they carry it at Petco. |
problematic dogfood Okay, i have a problem with getting mine to eat most kinds of the dry food. They started out on the Science Diet dry with Lamb and rice....then i bought some of the Ceasars and they seemed to love it, but i also have a cat and have noticed them eating the cat food. I have put it up and out of the way, i only feed the cat long enough for him to get what he needs and then take away the bowl so mine don't get into it. But, they are such picky eaters. What type of puppy food is best for Sophie, who is now going to have babies? Any suggestions./ thanks yorkiemomma7:animal-pa |
I had fed Bailey Royal Canin from the time I brought her home at 10 weeks until this past Nov. She started getting sick and her eyes were running. She was also scratching a lot.... My vet was a big fan of R.C., not any more though. After Bailey and several other dogs started developing allergies and other problems she no longer sells that brand at her office, she said she just kept seeing dog after dog (and cat) having problems she decided enough was enough. I have been trying both my girls on different brands and right now we are trying Natures Variety Raw, they both like it and are eating it which is really the most important thing, it doesn't matter how good the food is if they won't eat it. A lot of stores will give you free samples if you ask, or call the dog food companies and they will send you samples or coupons. |

I know for a fact that Vet's get kick-backs for referring Science Diet. :thumbdown This was told to me directly from a Science Diet Rep. a couple of years ago. Personally, I feed all my doggies Eukanuba still. I like reading these posts because I wouldn't mind changing to a "better" quality dog food. BUT I have never had any problems with the Eukanuba, Small Breed Puppy and my doggies are all healthy, and have nice coats! Maybe we should start a survey about the dog food everyone feeds their Yorkie to see what the majority likes...it would be interesting and great information... :p |
