getting your furbaby to take medication

I use velveeta cheese also, and they're never the wiser! They swallow it up whole w/o a second thought.

I have sometimes used the method of popping the pill down the throat and smoothing the throat w/my hand after.. but the cheese method is so much easier for me

I have some that stand in line, jumping on their hind legs, can't wait for their meds. Other's I have to fool and hide it in something, cause I can't get their mouths open to get the meds down. Some just take it right out of my hand......

Thanks! They're actually Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties) which are a smaller version.

I had a vet tell me to do this years ago. He said to put the pill as far back as possible, hold the mouth shut while stroking their throat until they swallow. I only had about a 20% success rate with this method.

Someone else told me to try blowing in their nose instead of stroking the throat to make them swallow. Lets just say that was a nightmare that left me with a really upset dog!!

And that was with my mellow Sheltie... could you just imagine how a York would react!!

I can imagine! LOL Miko's really good about it...I think he knows he needs it, but he has his moments too. Don't let him trick ya My husband administers his medicine everyday, and he has pretty much mastered it, but there are days that Miko just won't have it. Every once in awhile when he's getting his lactulose, he'll turn his head on purpose right before hubby pushes the liquid out of the syringe, and Voila...Sticky, gooey stuff all over his face and coat! hehe For the most part it's not bad though, the pills are much easier, I think

Harvey Will Not Be Fooled Either, We Have Tried Everything - Now I Just Put Pill In His Mouth And Hold His Mouth Closed Until It Has Gone, I Give Him A Nice Treat Afterwards - But Still If Looks Could Kill - I Would Be Dead....... He Is So Not Impressed With Me At All.

If you can crush the pill up you can put it in a little ranch dressing or creamed cheese. That never fails with my crew! I think I would ask the vet if he/she can prescribe liquid vitamins instead. That might be easier to get down ye old throat.

I use one of these 3 methods:

1. Stick the pill inside of a small piece of soft cheese

2. Put it in a glob of Nutrical

3. Put it in a glob of peanut butter

All these of these suggestions have always worked for me. Good luck!

I crush the pill and put it in cottage cheese, liverworst, or anything else the love.

Such talented tongues our babies have!!!!! Mine have figured out how to manuever the pill out of the treat and spit it right back at me. The latest thing I've found that works GREAT for me is also good for the dog. Nutro has a new dessert out that is healthy (only 100 calories in the whole can, no added junk) and comes in 4 different flavors. My kids actually think they are getting people food, since the flavors are pumpkin, apple, berry, and carrot cake. Believe me, they smell WONDERFUL, and I've found they also make a GREAT Kong stuffer when I need to keep someone occupied for a while.

If it's just a vitamin pill, maybe you could just find it in powdered form and sprinkle some into yogurt, cottage cheese or home made food. I mix up what's called healthy powder.
