trying to decide:yorkie-poo, yorkie-jack I am looking for a dog..and have a couple of requirements: must not shed, must be 5-8lbs. i had a jack russell we dearly loved, but he was quite a shedder - but we loved his personality. he was a wonderful dog. i am wondering how bad the shedding is with the yorkie - jack mix. Is it pot luck, and should i just get forget the jr and get a yorkie-poo? any recommendations? |
|
Just think about getting a yorkie they are a wonderful little dog and they dont shed. I dont know about those mixes |
|
I would just go with a Yorkie. They are wonderful little dogs with alot of personality. |
|
Only way to know for sure about shedding is go with a pure bred Yorkie!!! |

I too recommend you stick with a purebred. The Yorkshire Terrier is a wonderful breed and I cannot imagine what is to be gained by diluting it with another breed. If you cross it with another, you never know how much of which breed is going to come out once the puppy matures. You may wind up with a shedding, super-hype dog. There are plenty of Yorkies that will be on the larger side (5-8 pounds you are looking for). I don't think you will be at all disappointed with a Yorkie. No shedding, vibrant personalities and the most loving dogs I have ever run across. Stick with the pure-breds! |

Goodmorning...............I am definitely very happy w/ my Morkie(yoirkie/maltese). Absolutely no shedding, when combed gets a little hair like a human would. She has the best temperment and was very easy to potty train. Very Smart !!!! She definitely looks like a yorkie w/ some white from the maltese.....just make sure the mom and dad are seen & nice dogs. Blessings.... |

I agree.........stick with purebreds or rescue a mix from a shelter. Good luck |

My friend had a pug-chi mix so cute it looked like mini boxer, but it shed like crazy, I almost got one, but thank God I got my yorkie Pheobe she don't shed at all, I got enough of that , with my two cats  |
|
I would suggest you stick with the pure yorkie too. I have a yorkie/bichon mix who was supposed to be a non-shedder. Just recently I have noticed that if I am wearing something dark there are a few white dog hairs on me. It's not really that bad at all but my pure yorkie does not shed at all. I don't think you will be able to tell for sure with the mixes until you actually get them home and live with them for awhile. |

I have a yorkie jrt named Emma.. she's the sweetest girl ever, and I've never regretted getting her. She does shed when brushed, but that's it. Here she is at 7.5 weeks http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...6/100_0113.jpg http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...eminnewbed.jpg http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...6/DCFN0019.jpg |

Thanks for all the input. Looks like it was just wishful thinking about getting a non-shedding yorkie-jack...but no one said anything about the yorkie-poo mix. I was under the impression that mixing the breeds can actually lead to a healthier dog, by breeding out weaknesses of each breed. Perhaps I am wrong, but would really like to hear from those with experience on this issue. Are there certain ailments or weaknesses that plague the yorkie breed? Since the poodle is also a non-shedder, what are the advantages/disadvantages of mixing these two breeds? Thanks for all your advice! |

Good luck finding a new baby |

I friend of mine had a Malti-Poo and he was so hyper. He was neurotic (<<<spelling??) and peed on himself and humped everything even though he was fixed... He did shed a little... I did not like the mix and I prefer a full-breed Yorkie. So, as you can probably guess, I would suggest a pure-breed Yorkie, they so much cuter. <<<Sorry to everyone who has mixes, it's JMO- :p |
|
There are illnesses and bad genetic traits in every breed of dog. Mixing the two breeds will not necessarily give you a healthier dog...just like owning a purebred will not mean you're going to be stuck with a sickly dog. Do your research. If you have to have a mixed breed, by all means, go to a shelter or petfinder.com There are plenty of mixes at both places. Otherwise, go with a yorkie. Besides potty training issues, they are a wonderful breed that doesn't shed since they do not have an undercoat. Good luck. |

This is a very sticky subject as some people get very angry about breeding mixes on purpose. Responsible breeders work very hard to keep to the breed standard. If they didn't, eventually every breed would just run together. Do you have any reason for not getting a pure bred yorkie? Since you want a dog in the 5 to 8 pound range, it seems like all but the tiniest of yorkies would be just right for you. |
|
If you are strictly looking to get either a Yorkie-Poo or Yorkie-Jack, I would think a Poo mix would have better temperment and less shedding odds. A Jack Russel Terrier is a very energetic breed and will shed to where Poodles are much easier to train and don't shed. What ever you decide Y-Poo, Y-Jack, or a pure breed Yorkie, I do know you will find the perfect baby for YOU! |

I have a yorkie poo also, and he's a great dog. Mine has a poodle coat, w/a yorkie frame/face. ALL dogs shed some which is where mats come from, ect.. but they shed very mimimally. It isn't true that mixing two different breeds together will generate a healthier dog. It's just a hybrid myth. If you're going for a mix, *from experience* check the shelters first, and if you're unable to find a suitable dog then look for a breeder who at least does health testing on their breeding dogs :) |

Thanks again for the input. I am not set on a mix, but i kindda got a little scared after reading some things on the internet, i.e. there is some woman who advertises a book she wrote about yorkies, and how she had to spend several thousand in the first year of owning one on health problems..her book is about things that supposedly breeders don't tell you... heck, i don't know... so i thought i would ask those with real every day experience..and just for the record, i haven't seen a yorkie that i didn't think was just adorable, they are all so cute.. so i know when i do get another dog, it will be pure yorkie or mostly yorkie... so what kind of health problems or vet bills am i looking forward to? |
|
Mine are two years and have had no medical problems |

It's just so silly! Any dog could be sick or healthy. Get it from a reputable breeder, take good care of it, feed it good food, excercise it well and maintain vet visits. I suspect she is talking about the so called 'teacups, tinies, babydolls, etc' from unreputable breeders. As to what kind of possible health problems to look for? Not sure that's fair to say.........you don't know for sure. :( You can do a google search about the topic and get answers. Also, you should do a google search on hybrids and potential for health/temperament problems while you're at it. Lastly, if you google every breed you'll find they have a potential for certain health problems as well. It's just like humans kids, and virtually every living thing on this planet. ;) |

There are alot of people on here with yorkies. This many people woould not own yorkies if they were sickly. The heealth problems that they can get like liver shunt and luxating patella are rare but also any small breedcan get |

Mix breeds on purpose No. I've had or have yorkie mixes. adore them have again. yes in a heartbeat. pay an outragous price for one. NO! I'll pay adopt fee. $150. max for a adopted yorkie mix. line someone's pocket for greed. NO! I see it like this. People are always goina want something someone esle dona want or like. it's a human choice. my choice is if I get another pup. I hope some day for it to be a pure yorkie of a good heftty size. of good health. Will I ever. don't know. but in til than if there's a mix of yorkie out there needing a home and it's a rescue. Door's open. I'll be contecting Go Fetch, barkindogsclothes, and Puppywraps. and will suport those babies right. ask ma neighbor Milly's pup now has belly bands and about three t shirts. LOL TyTy |

I have had 2 yorkies and now have a wonderful little yorkie-poo. He does not shed at all-Poodles and Yorkies don't shed. Out of all the yorkies I have had, he has been by far the best at training & temperment. He is very laid back & loving & has learned why more things than my yorkies. I was going to get another yorkie & found him-that was it -love at first sight! If you want a certain kind of dog, I would say you should get it or you may not end up happy & the puppy will know it too. He has the same look as a yorkie, but with floppy ears & wave to his hair. He has also turned a beautiful black & silver. Good Luck! |

I agree with kay6688. You get what you want, because in the long run you are the one who will be leaving with the dog, if you heart is set for a yorkie-poo get a yorkie-poo. Since I meet my neighbor with her dog I felt in love with the yorkie, I didn't know that was a yorkie but I loved her personality, and for couples years, I search, save, and after quiting my job and stay home I decided that was a time for my yorkie. I wanted a female yorkie for so long I even had the name Pheobe pick out, my co-worker just to laugh at me about that, then I friend of mine want to give me a pup but was not a yorkie, one of my co-worker (a friend) said but girl you always wanted a yorkie, so I told my other friend no thankyou, I will wait for my Yorkie, then a breeder try to sell me a male yorkie and I almost bought it, he was cute in did, but my husband told me you always wanted a female yorkie you even have the name pick out, so I told the breeder no thankyou. Then I contacted Pheobes bredder, she said I have a female, then when she answer all my question, Pheobe was the one, just in health, in size, color,in my budget:D and in top of that a champion sired with akc and others papers, to tell you the true I didn't even care, about the papers ,but that came with the packet. God give me more that a ask him. He said in PROVERBS 16:3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. So if you want a yorkie poo, get your yorkie-poo. I'm sure he or she will be perfect for you because is what you wanted. Sorry for the long note. Take care.;) |

Yorkiepoo Hi I Saw Your Concerns About Getting A Mixed Breed Dog, And Not Knowing Your Financial Situation, But Some People Just Cant Afford A Pure Bred Dog. Im Not Knowledgable About Yorkies As Pure Breds But I Do Own A Yorkiepoo, Due To Not Being Able To Afford A Purebred. They Dont Shed They Are Outgoing And Funny, To Be Around, They Are Lovable, Smart, And The Cutest Little Dogs Hes Been A Blessing And My Chihuahuas Best Friend. Im Not Sure Whos Personalitie Hes Taking After As I Dont Know Much About Either Breed As Pure Breds I Just Know This Yorkiepoo Is Turning Out To Be The Most Clown Like Little Devil Who Is Sensitive, Thoughtful Yet Very Outgoing And Non Aggressive Towards Kids Or Other People. If Anything He Loves Everyone. He Also Gets Crazy Wild About Wanting To Play With Other Dogs No Matter What Breed They Are. So If Your Considering Getting A Yorkipoo, I Will Tell You From My Own Personal Experience And Depending On How You Raise Them They Are Wonderful Little Dogs. |

I have a yorkie and a yorkie-poo. I love them both the same, but I must say that when people see them, it's the yorkie-poo that they fall in love with. And don't worry about people slamming cross-breeding. It is a personal preference all the way around. Just do what is right for YOU!!! |
|
Personally I do have a thing against people breeding mixes and selling them for such insane prices. If you want a mix, look at all the shelters, PetFinders and Rescue Groups. They are FULL of mixes, and still people are breeding the heck out of them for that almighty dollar. |

If you find a responsible breeder with a good health guarantee you shouldn't have any major problems. Since, you are looking for a larger yorkie you are even better off. Some of those health problems are directly linked to the tiny yorkies because they can be very fragile. My female is 5lbs and my male is 7lbs and neither one has had any heath problems. I bought pet insurance and not even their regular care cost any more than any other dog. Just my thoughts but I think yorkies are the number two breed for a reason. They are very loyal, lovable and if you keep their hair on the shorter side... not that hard to groom. Mine make very little mess and don't shed a bit. Good luck!! |
