I am looking for a dog..and have a couple of requirements: must not shed,
must be 5-8lbs. i had a jack russell we dearly loved, but he was quite a shedder - but we loved his personality. he was a wonderful dog. i am wondering how bad the shedding is with the yorkie - jack mix. Is it pot luck, and should i just get forget the jr and get a yorkie-poo? any recommendations?

Just think about getting a yorkie they are a wonderful little dog and they dont shed. I dont know about those mixes

I would just go with a Yorkie. They are wonderful little dogs with alot of personality.

Only way to know for sure about shedding is go with a pure bred Yorkie!!!

I have a JR too and it is amazing how much they shed. Mine gets the least bit nervous and she will shed a pile -- like on the vet table.

I too recommend you stick with a purebred. The Yorkshire Terrier is a wonderful breed and I cannot imagine what is to be gained by diluting it with another breed. If you cross it with another, you never know how much of which breed is going to come out once the puppy matures. You may wind up with a shedding, super-hype dog. There are plenty of Yorkies that will be on the larger side (5-8 pounds you are looking for). I don't think you will be at all disappointed with a Yorkie. No shedding, vibrant personalities and the most loving dogs I have ever run across.

Stick with the pure-breds!

Goodmorning...............I am definitely very happy w/ my Morkie(yoirkie/maltese). Absolutely no shedding, when combed gets a little hair like a human would. She has the best temperment and was very easy to potty train. Very Smart !!!! She definitely looks like a yorkie w/ some white from the maltese.....just make sure the mom and dad are seen & nice dogs.

I agree.........stick with purebreds or rescue a mix from a shelter.

My friend had a pug-chi mix so cute it looked like mini boxer, but it shed like crazy, I almost got one, but thank God I got my yorkie Pheobe she don't shed at all, I got enough of that , with my two cats :rolleyes:

I would suggest you stick with the pure yorkie too. I have a yorkie/bichon mix who was supposed to be a non-shedder. Just recently I have noticed that if I am wearing something dark there are a few white dog hairs on me. It's not really that bad at all but my pure yorkie does not shed at all. I don't think you will be able to tell for sure with the mixes until you actually get them home and live with them for awhile.

I have a yorkie jrt named Emma.. she's the sweetest girl ever, and I've never regretted getting her. She does shed when brushed, but that's it.

Thanks for all the input. Looks like it was just wishful thinking about getting a non-shedding yorkie-jack...but no one said anything about the yorkie-poo mix. I was under the impression that mixing the breeds can actually lead to a healthier dog, by breeding out weaknesses of each breed. Perhaps I am wrong, but would really like to hear from those with experience on this issue. Are there certain ailments or weaknesses that plague the yorkie breed?
Since the poodle is also a non-shedder, what are the advantages/disadvantages of mixing these two breeds?

In theory, yes, one would hope you'd get the best of both worlds. But that's in theory, not reality. It doesn't actually work like that. It's a toss up as to what genes you're going to get. You could actually end up with the worst of both breeds. However, from what I hear the yorkie-poos don't shed. Why do you want one anyway? Why not just a regular old yorkie? ;)

I friend of mine had a Malti-Poo and he was so hyper. He was neurotic (<<<spelling??) and peed on himself and humped everything even though he was fixed...:confused: He did shed a little... I did not like the mix and I prefer a full-breed Yorkie.

So, as you can probably guess, I would suggest a pure-breed Yorkie, they so much cuter. <<<Sorry to everyone who has mixes, it's JMO- :p

There are illnesses and bad genetic traits in every breed of dog. Mixing the two breeds will not necessarily give you a healthier dog...just like owning a purebred will not mean you're going to be stuck with a sickly dog.

Do your research. If you have to have a mixed breed, by all means, go to a shelter or petfinder.com There are plenty of mixes at both places. Otherwise, go with a yorkie. Besides potty training issues, they are a wonderful breed that doesn't shed since they do not have an undercoat.
