Shattered Nerves I scheduled the appointment to get Brandi spayed for Friday.....I am a NERVOUS WRECK!!! Besides Onsies is there anything I should have to make her more comfortable? I will be picking her up by myself on Friday.....she has a car seat....do I have to handle her in any special way? I know it's better for her but I sure don't like having to do this |
Good luck! I don't have advice, but I'll be going through that in a couple of months too. About the onsies...how does this work? Do you cut a hole for the tail, or snap around the tail? (Can you tell I'm not real creative) |
You might ask your Vet for pain killers. Some Vets just give them some you have to ask. You may not need them but I still felt better having them |
she probably won't be able to tell you that she has to go potty.. layla had an accident on the blanket before i figured it out.. so i took her out every few hours and you have to help her stand.. she will probably be too out of it to stand on her own.. layla didn't have pain meds and was fine.. just be very gentle when you move her.. she will let you know if it hurts... i had a new toy for layla when she came home.. she still has it and it is one of her favorites.. have a nice little spot all ready for her to lay down when you get home and try and have everything out ready so you dont' have to leave her too long to go get something.. poor babe.. she'll do great! |
what size onsies should I get? I was thinking preemie size |

OH! I feel for you! I have gone through it twice and have another to schedule within a month or so! How old is Brandi? My yorkie bounced back after surgery and was a real trooper! I was so shocked at her behavior and I hope it is that easy for Truffles - and Brandi too! Do ask for pain meds and do as Marcerella says too....she will be wobbly from the meds. I slept on the frontroom floor with my girls the first 2 nights :2hearts2: |
Brandi is 10 months old.....and I've been putting it off but I know it's now or never......and I will be off work on Friday due to me having a proceedure done tomorrow....so I figured if I can do it she can do it too.....now I just need to keep up the nerve to take her |
I had Gwen spayed , and she was only two pounds. I know my vet very well, and he let me watch the whole thing which made me feel a lot better. She was just fine after the surgery. He kept her over night, because she was so tiny, and wanted someone to watch her overnight. If you trust your vet. Relax and know she'll be just fine. |
Chewy was about 5 lbs when she was spayed at 6 months. I got her a onsie size 0-2 months. It was a little loose of her but thats good because i didnt want to struggle to get it on her. She came home at about 5 and slept. I got home at 7 and put her on her wee wee pad and she peed. Then she went back to sleep. The problem was she couldnt sleep on her belly. She would put her front paws down and her head down but her back paws were standing!! I felt so bad because i thought if she collapsed it would hurt more. So i kept flipping her onto her side. I gave her one pain killer to make it easier to sleep. But the next morning she was back to walking and eating as usual (the first night you cant feed her). I did give her some nutrical thought (dont tell my vet). By the second full day home she was back to running around and jumping.I couldnt keep her calm. Try not to worry and ask the office to call you when shes out of surgery. They bounce back really quick. Good luck |

oh and when i took her out to pee.. i just undid the snaps and folded them up.. and resnapped them so they went around her waist.. layla slept in the onesie until her stiches were taken out. |
I bought a package of 5 onsies size 0 - 3 months....says it fits 5 - 8 lbs.....Brandi is 4 lbs 13 oz so that should be fine.......how long till the stitches get taken out? how soon afterwards can she be groomed? |
we had to wait 10 days before the stiches came out and 10 days before she could have a bath. |
Just wanted to wish you good luck with Brandi. I am sure all will go well and she will be home with you before you know it. It is scary to take our babies in for surgery but if she is not going to be bred your doing the right thing for her. Hugs to Brandi from Buddy. Carol & Buddy |
Sending hugs to the nervous mom :ghug:. I can almost guarantee that Brandi will do much better through the whole ordeal than you will. Try to relax -- if you are nervous and upset, Brandi will "read this" and be nervous too. |
Thank you all so much....I'm just worried she's gonna hate me afterwards and I don't think I could stand that.... |
I found having a syringe to be so helpful too, to syringe water in their mouth every so often since they can't and shouldn't get up too much. Also, every hr or so, I'd pick her up gently and place her in a pee pad to do her biz instead of taking her outside, especially days 1-3. THe pain meds are a must, it's difficult to hear them 'cry' out in pain but they will spring back to their normal self faster than you think. |
I don't really take her out now so she's used to going on the weewee pads so that's not a problem at all....I have a syringe in the house (I didn't even know I might need that) I imagine the vet will tell me what to do about feeding and meds...should I insist on pain meds?....Will she have problems with hypoglycemic reaction having not eaten from midnight the night before? |
the whole meds thing can go either way... you can not get them and then your dog knows that she is sore and won't try and over do it thinking that she feels fine and rip out her stiches... or you can get them and have her not be in any pain.. ask your vet what he recommends.. layla didn't have them and was fine... as for feeding... i had some wet food on hand because she was so drousy she woudln't chew.. plus i knew she LOVED wet food and would eat it no matter what! someone mentioned they spent the night on the couch with their pups.. i did too.. layla was in her crate on the coffee table and i was on the couch.. i dont' think i slept at all that night... wanted to make sure she was ok and didn't have to go to the bathroom. if you have ANY questions after you get her home.. we are here! |
thank you so much...I don't know what I'd do without all of you....I'm sure Friday night will be spent with my computer signed on all night and YT opened on my screen....I just have to get through the next 3 days...and I'm having a proceedure done tomorrow so I'm DOUBLELY nervous |

Good Luck!!!! I got my maltese done today and she has to stay overnight. I was so worried all day but she did fine and I get to go get her tomorrow morning. I am glad I saw the thread because I never thought of putting her in a onesie. |
What are onsies?? Like diapers?? Are they for human babies?? |
ummmmm I'm having a "female" proceedure done LOL....nothing too serious (I hope)..... awwww I'm glad you're baby is doing well :-) I'm sure I'll be saying the same thing on Friday A Onesie is what mommies put on their skin babies....it's a "t shirt/diaper cover" all in one....with snaps for easy diaper changing....the only reason I know to use that after the surgery is I read it here....I tried the ones I got her on when I got home before....they're a perfect fit.... |
Being nervous is a natural state when one of our babies is going through this. I just had it done and it was difficult to deal with, mentally. BUT....I am sure she will do fine, just like my Sassy did. Sassy didn't have any outside stitches. And the Vet told me to use Infant Tylenol for pain if I felt she needed it. She is three and a half pounds so her dosage was just two little drops out of the dropper. All the best to you. Hope you and she get through this with flying colors.:) I know you will feel much better once it is done and behind you. |

Just make sure the hole for the head is big enough. I got the one with some buttons and short sleeves on all 4 feet. lol She doesnt like wearing clothes but didnt mind these...and her other option was an ecollar. I only needed it for the first 2 days. She didnt seem to be bothered by the stitches. |
I got her the short sleeved 2 legged onesies....I tried one on her it fit fine....I bought a package of 5 incase she has an accident....I will just tie dye the extra ones and use them as jammies for the future |
ok I'm down to the wire here......I don't know how I'm going to be able to do this tomorrow......I think it's the hardest thing I will ever have to do in my life....I know I need to follow through with this....and that it's really best for her.....but it doesn't feel best for me right now |
i think you are letting yourself think about this too much... she will be fine... if you are confident in your vet.. things will be fine... if your vet is the problem then you might not want to go through with it with HIM/HER. if spaying is something you want to have done.. then go tomorrow and things will be ok... we ALL doubted weather or not we should do various things... i was sick the night before i had to bring layla in to get baby teeth removed... should i put her under again.. and so soon after her spay.. i was a mess.. but she came out just fine... the sooner you do it the sooner it is behind you and you never have to do it again :) it will be ok :) we are here for you tomorrow... i'll be thinking of you both! |
