Does anyone's dog use both pads and go outside? Max has now decided that he only wants pee outside. He began this himself while I was retaining him to paper. He just started going outside, I certainly wasn't going to stop him, and now won't go on the paper. He went last night at 8:00 PM. He woke me at 7:00, I put him on the paper and he wouldn't go. He was making his morning pee on the paper until today. I finally took him out and he went right away. Poop is still saved for the house in the vicinity of the paper. Ideally, I'd like him to use the paper in the morning, in emergencies and late at night. We live in a 6th floor apartment in NYC and it's not like I can just open the door and run outside with him. (Although I just put as long coat on over my pajamas this morning). Am I dreaming, is this possible, does anyone do it, and, if so, how? Please enlighten me. He's leashed or crated 24/7 because he was marking before and after he was neutered and I have to tell you - his urination habits are just not that interesting. I'd love to have a realistic goal and then work towards it. wait ...DAVE PRICE on channel 2 IS SHOWING OFF A YORKIE AND ADVERTISNG THE ANIMAL CONTROL SHELTER IN NY. IT'S A BIG ONE AND A REAL BEAUTY. GO YORKIES!!! Anyway, any advice about both paper and outsided training would be appreciated. I'm so bored with where, when and how often he pees. Thanks so much, Judy |
My 2 boys use both. The only bad thing is they mistake throw rugs for pads sometimes. Also, when they go outside, it's to play. They do potty when they go out, but they NEVER just go out, potty, and come back in. It's all about smelling and playing. There are pro's and con's. Indiana weather is unpredictable. I'm glad they do both. I do have problems with them marking sometimes. I'm in the market for some belly bands to try out. If I can control the marking - I'm happy with the situation. Some people think potty pads are gross, but they are convenient. |
i do both.. i try and walk lexi as much as possible..i still praise her to no end when she pottys outside and inside.. |
Lily does both too. My husband wants to get rid of the pads, but it is convenient when it rains, etc. She tends to go outside more often, but seems to leave the poop for the pads. She also mistakes throw rugs for pads sometimes too which is annoying. She basically does both pads and grass and I always thought that it was a little strange, but it's whatever... |
We do both. It depends on the weather. |

with the weather we've been having.. yesterday was the first time Kayah wennt outside in two weeks |
Kodak is an outside dog but he may use the pads on the days where he is here all day. |
Poor thing! The 6th floor is pretty high at 7 in the morning! Well I don't know if boys are different with their pee habits? My Vixxen has started to "like" peeing outside but she will do both. It has become our routine to go outside first thing in the morning and then whenever I think about it during the day...but she still uses the pee pad. What if you put the pee pad in an x-pen area and make him stay until he pees? At least in the morning? |

My three are pad trained, although I am praying that once we get the new fencing up early this spring, that they will try and go outside more. If not, as long as they keep using their pad, that will be okay. I just thought if I could get them to go outside too, it would cut the cost down on pee pads. |

Ozzie does both, too. Almost always will go once outside but that's never his primary objective. More interested in playing with and smelling everything. Had some BAD marking experiences the first year or two and but he got fairly consistent about peeing on the papers. When we took them up, he peed where they used to be ... so we returned them. Have never been able to successfully turn him to outside only and finally just caved. Every once in a while he will mark if he's mad about something. And sometimes, you have to remind him to "go in on your potty" and he will. At night, if he sleeps with one of us, he will kiss you if he needs to go. Doesn't happen often though. We just set him down and he goes in on his papers. We're just thankful he uses the papers now. It works for him and for us, so why make each other miserable over it? ;) |
I used to live in a small duplex and my two only used paper until a year ago when I moved into a house with a big yard. Now they want nothing to do with paper and love going in the yard. Unfortunately Peanut also likes carpet every now and again, but will not go on the linoleum or tile. |
I Have Just Now Taken The Last Of The Wee Pads Away - Harvey Just Goes Outside Now - Unless I Go Visiting And He Then Uses The Pad. I Agree About The Sniffing And Messing Around Though - Instead Of Just Doing His Business...... - Unless It Is Raining And Then He Just Goes Real Quick, So He Can Go Back Inside. He Does Now Go On Command A Lot More - He Is Learning...... It Is A Problem For You Being On A Higher Floor Level Though - Good Luck....... |
mine do both too....:) |
