Minors wanting Yorkies I have been talking on and off to a fellow YT member who is young. She is a minor but desperately wants a yorkie but her parents have told her that she has to do everything herself. My question here is: Would those of you who breed rather have the parent call you and discuss getting a dog for thier child?? Would you discuss a minor getting a yorkie without talking to the parent?? Any other advice you would have for this person would be greatly appreciated. Kelly |
I would talk to the parents also, to make sure that its okay with them if she has one, and also make sure the girl has money for vet bills, because anything can happen at anytime, and sometimes its a great deal of money. When i was 17, i had 1 yorkie-pom, and a yorkie, and now i have another one at 21, and its even hard for me to sometimes pay her vet bills. I would make sure shes responsible enough to take care of a puppy, and make sure she knows all the pros and CONS, before purchasing. Its alot of work taking care of a puppy, and you have to devote alot of time to them in the 1st months, for training, shots, and spays(if you get one) But if she understands, and accepts everything she will have to do, and the time she will have to put into it, i would say yeah give her a chance. You just have to make sure the pup will be taken care of in the event something happens, and shes unable to take care of the pup. |
:D ;) :) hey  :p :( |
I would never let one of my pups without talking to the parents first . As already said , It's ok to say I want a puppy but it is very much responsibilies attached to owning a dog . |
absolutely not without the parent's consent. I young person could pay me $2000 for a pup and I would not do it! For breeders that do contracts, you cannot hold a minor liable if they sign it. |
I think one big responsibility to keep in mind is: do the parents want this dog? If the minor is still in high school or below, how do they know where they are going to be living in the future? What if they go off to college? Absolutely No dogs allowed in dorm rooms. The parents would end up caring for the dog. I am 21 years old and under no circumstances would my parents allow me to have a dog under their roof unless I could provide for the dog and I had a huge grasp on what my future holds. I do have Stewie now, but I am not going to lie -- I can hardly afford to support myself. If a crazy vet expensive comes up, Visa or Mastercard would have to foot the bill for me and I know that. ITS SO EXPESNIVE TO HAVE A DOG. The parents would have to be the one to purchase it and be willing to meet with me/agree to certain things if I were a breeder selling one of my puppies. If they seemed to have a cold attitude toward the puppy or the responsibilities, then they would not get one of my dogs. |
Thanks all. Yorkielover_201 is the one wanting a dog and I have noticed on many posts here in the past week that she has commented about wanting a yorkie but I know that she is young.. I think she is only 12. I have a son that is 11 and in no way would he be allowed to have a dog of his own unless I was more than willing to take care of the dog. I mean what happens when the kids goes to highschool or begins to drive or whatever?? I didn't want to offend yorkielover_201 as I am a parent but I wouldn't want my kids spending thier b-day money for a dog so I wanted to post something to see what others had to say. I myself think that it would be best for yorkielover 201 to keep saving her money and do well in school and when she gets older then maybe start looking into getting a yorkie. |

Thanks. That is just coming from the parent in me. A dog is a whole different story than say a hamster or a lizard. My kids have all kinds of lizards and stuff like that that are easy to care for and relatively cheap. I made a deal with the kids that they had to buy the reptile with their money but I would pay for the supplies to take care of it. This way it teaches them to take care of it or they lost out on the money that they spent. But that is totally different than a dog. A dog has vet bills and all kinds of stuff. I myself just think that until a kid is at least through high school they aren't responsable enough for thier very own dog. |
I will never sell to a minor . |
Well I'm 16 and looking for a yorkie. My parents are willing to pay for all the bills, but it's up to me to buy the dog. I plan to get a job or two over the summer to pay for the dog and supplies. My parents are even considering meeting me half way depending on how much I make. The yorkie would also never be home alone. |
Christina, That's really great of your parents. My parents were the same way with my car -- they said they'd buy me a cheap car to get to work, but i'd have to give them half my paycheck until they got their money back in full. It sounds like your parents are in it with you and its also kinda nice that they're teaching you responsibility and finance (believe me, though it sucks, it pays off in the long run) Someone who would really want their young child to have a dog would be out there researching the best breeders and putting a bit of money aside for the dog, or taking one from a rescue if they were short on money (or , of course, if they wanted to do a good deed and weren't interested in pure breds). |

Well I hope it works out for you Yorkielover_201! :) |
I am 18, and I just got a yorkie. I am living on mine own though and pay my own bills. But I know what it is like trying to find a yorkie. I wish all you guys the best, that is great that your parents are willing to help out with the necessary cost that go along with getting a yorkie. Christina - where at in texas are you located, I know a breeder in OK you could look into. |
South Texas. :D |
Hey Yorkielover201! good luck to u on getting a yorkie! i am 13 yrs old n i have a yorkie-maltese named Rex. My mom and dad pay the vet bills, a few toys, training school, and they payed for the pup itself but i have to like go to the training. and if i want to buy him clothes or whatever its my money. Rex is MY dog not the family's. I have to walk him, and put him in his crate and feed him and wash him ect. but tomorrow i am going to Philli for 3 days with my school, and my rents and my maid r taking care of him. |
i'm not a breeder or anything but i do have a 10 year old soon to be 11 daughter and i know that i would not allow her to have a dog until she's done with going to school. i'm an adult and it's very hard and very expensive for me to keep up with my coco and coco's my dog. of course my daughter plays with him and stuff but for a child to have full on responsability i don't know about that. i mean are you going to be able to be getting up in the early morning hours to take him out to pee?and still be able to focus on school?i'm sorry i know i sound like the typical parent it's just that i'm very strict when it comes to education for my girls and i don't want anything that's going to distract them or take away from thier homework and study time at sucha young age. 16?12?13? :lightbulb i know this is off topic but i was just wondering what's the majority age group on yorkietalk? |
The breeder is in Howe, OK. She has a little boy for $350 reg. he is just a big guy that is why he is cheaper. Maye 7 to 8 lbs |
Well it's fully understandable! I don't see any harm in just looking out for us youngsters ;) |

i know skool is imp't but like i cant work for more than 2 hrs! if i need to i take a break go on my scooters..attach the pup's leash to the scooter and go for a ride! nice stress breaker |
i have straight A's except for the occasional B and i am a winner of 3 gold Maccabi world champion medals in tennis..and i go to the mall and i am on the Florida swimming team btw....i do not know how obsessed you are with ur pup but let me remind u a baby is NOT a dog...babys r HUMAN. Dogs good for teens ...teaches responsibility and comitment i also have a parakeet and a conure |
when I was in high school I went to school from 8 to 3:30 then worked from 4 to 8. My mom did not make me but I wanted to save for college and to get a better car. I even had to work 8 hour shifts on the weekends. That is basically what I do now tha I am in college. it seems like I never get a day off from work or school. I also make straight a's or I have a few b's every now and Then. |
yes and that would be a diffeent story for me..my paretns r paying for my collae and i am getting a good car (my bro has a mercedes convertable n my sis has an Infinity G35) |
The dog, ultimately, belongs to the parents because a minor cannot legally enter into a binding contract and is no more responsible enough to own a dog than they are to have and care for a human baby. If I were a breeder, I would deal directly with the parents only for this reason. Regardless of what the child may promise, the parents would have to accept the total responsibility for the animal from a legal and ethical stand point. I had wanted a yorkie all my life, but I waited until my kids were older and I was working less to get mine because I knew that they thrive on human interaction and contact. It would not be fair to this breed to not give them that in my opinion. My 18 year old college daughter has a yorkie and I bought him for her, but she lives in private housing with 4 other girls and we picked a dog with a mellow personality that would suit her lifestyle. Santa Barbara is very dog friendly thank goodness and she is a photograper so Buddha goes everywhere with her!! He is tiny and the best, most well behaved yorkie. Hefner would never work in that environment. Buddha is never home alone and they come home most weekends. My 17 year old also has a yorkie, but she is in school everyday so Chai is my responsibility a lot of the time. When Amy is home she cares for Chai, but a lot of the responsibility falls to me because yorkies are so "needy" and thrive on human contact and interaction. I accept full responsibility for Chai and Buddha because my daughters do not have the where with all at this stage in their lives to be financially responsible for another life. I am lucky enough to be able to provide the very best care for them and their dogs. I think 12 is too young to be solely responsible for a dog as small, fragile and demanding as a yorkie. They are truly like babies, not dogs. I would not let a 12 year old babysit a newborn baby and, therefore, I would not let them be the sole responsibility for a yorkie baby puppy. To me, it is the same since yorkie puppies demand 24/7 attention and care in my opinion. If a parent were willing to be the primary care giver with the daughter assisting while supervised, that would probably work well. JMHO. |
Well my parents would be paying for my college too but I got scholarships, so there is no need. I need money however to live on. I do not live with my parents anymore, they live 3 hours away. And my car was a 1998 sunfire, I just want to get a VW beetle becuse I always wanted one and my parents said they would help pay for it but not all the way becuase I already had a car. |
I can see this is going to get out of hand. |
