Is Your Yorkie a Lap Baby? I wonder because it was recently stated in a thread that yorkies are commonly not known as lap dogs. This was news to me! When I was researching the breed (several years ago), it was stated that they a consummate lap babies and love to be with their people. This is one of the big and many reasons I wanted a yorkie. My baby is very much a lap baby. Don't get me wrong she loves to play but she loves being in my lap more than anything. I wanted to know if this is this an exception or the rule? Is your yorkie a lap baby? |
Most definitely Gracie is a lap baby, rather a shoulder baby! In the evening when I recline on the sofa to watch TV, she jumps up on me and snuggles up on my left shoulder, and gives me lots of kisses. :D |
Absolutely, sometimes she even pushes her way in. Especially, when friends come to visit and she must be in the middle of everything. |
Nope, she rather run after everything or everyone. She has a habit of wrestling with me. :animal36 |
Oh no! I wish, though :) Mia is very independent, and she only lies down on my lap for a minute max if she is feeling charitable. Don't get me wrong, she loves attention, games, training and a couple of hugs here and there but she is no lap baby. Maybe it has to do with her size too. Being 9.5 lbs, she cannot comfortably fit on my lap either. Sometimes if I am sitting on the couch, and she feels like taking a nap, she comes and lies down right next to me. Then I get to give her belly rubs, and boy does she love that!! |
Hmm... seems like a good mix. So, I guess it just depends on your baby's personality. The more mellow yorkies are more prone to be lap babies (I'm assuming). Quote:

nope. i thought they were until this thread!!! but mine isn't... well i'm glad i know that. now i don't feel as though Troy hates me and doesn't want to sit on my lap!!!:p |
Interesting question! My husband always says he can't believe Vixxen will jump off our laps to go lay in the other room on the chaise!! She has made this HER chaise, as she sits up high enough to see everything and outside! However, she has to know where I'm at in the house every second and has to sleep with me and will make herself sick if I'm away too long! Funny huh? You'd think she'd be on my lap more! And Truffles is pretty independant also! However, she will settle down and sleep on my lap alot :D |
Jewelina and Jaden are both lap babies. They love nothing more than being in my lap! |

:) Uma is very much a terrier when on the floor, but as soon as she is put on your lap she becomes all snuggly and cuddly! |
Muffin is either perched on our laps, demanding our attention...or being Miss Independent, laying in another room & totally ignoring us. She doesn't seem to have a "gray area"! All or nothing, it's one extreme or the other. CJ |
Beauty is a bit of both. When we are at home and it is just the two of us (when my daughter is at school) she is such a new born baby:). But as soon as 2:57 hits she is ready and waiting for my daughter at the door. It is amazing how she knows exactly what time to get up from her bed and go to the door. It is almost scary. Once My daughter is in Beauty is a totally different dog. So I would have to say that she is a little bit of both! |

lap babies I agree, it is a personality issue, not a breed-specific issue. Our little Yorkie boy Shadow loves to be snuggled on my lap, but he has his hyper moments when he is just too busy stirring up trouble to sit. Kitara loves to be in a lap, or in our arms. She will follow us around the house begging to be picked up and held. Suki is more independent and doesn't ask to be picked up, but she is more than willing to steal my pillow at night. There are lap dogs and there are Dog Laps. Some of us are lucky enough to fall into that category. Are you a Dog Lap? do you find yourself hesitating to answer the phone or get up for something because you would be waking up three or four (or more!) of your snuggling fur children? Do your dogs pace the floor restlessly, waiting for you to sit down and be their Dog Lap? ah, the wonderful blessing of being loved by our dogs. :animal-pa |
Tinkerbell has some of both I think, she can be a lapdog but she also loves to play and run:p. |
Peanut is, Toby isn't. Peanut isists on being in my lap evertime I am on the computer. If I ignore her she will pace back and forth a few times then pee on the floor. Argghh!! Toby is much too hyper to sit still, but he can literally play fetch for hours. |

Hopey is a very independent little thing as long as no one else is home... I have teenagers in my house ALL the time... Hopey hates it and sits on the end of my bed barking until they go away.... she hides and wants to be held but only when people are around. Tootie is a love bug, ALL the time! He loves anyone who will play with him... |
Pete is a lap baby all the way. My boyfriend is in a wheelchair so if Pete isnt eating, pooping or playing he's perched on his dads lap a.k.a. Pete's Throne:eek:   |
My crazy little one is not only a lap baby, but he doubles as a neck rest. His favorite thing to do is take his Nylabone chew toy and either perch on my shoulder or wedge his whole body behind my neck (like a neck-roll pillow), securing himself between my head and the back of my chair (hed on one shoulder, butt on the other). Imagine to joy of having a wet Nylabone smacked up against your face for leverage. The sound affects of juicy chewing also are such fun. Actually, when he's in his "behind-the-head" position, it does make for a nice, WARM, furry neck pillow. It's funny, when he jumps on my lap with his bone, he just keeps climbing on up to the top like it's a perfectly normal thing to do -- all I see is an adorable face charging at me, his bone hanging out of his mouth like a cigarette. Sometimes I insist that he sit on my lap instead and chew -- but sometimes I just give in! |
I wish Zoey was a lap baby. The only time she jumps on my lap is when I have food. |
Our Tobey is. Sort of. He's odd xD He doesn't like being picked up (sometimes he'll run rather than be picked up), but once he's being held he just snuggles and won't move until you do xD |
Harvey Is Difinatley A Cuddly/ Kissy Dog - He Likes Nothing Better Than To Get Snuggly With Us - He Also Has His Energetic Moments Too, He Has A Lovely Gentle Temperament - He Is My Baby -ahhhhhh |
Never had one that was not a lap baby. All mine literally live on me and will not even play or eat unless I am right there with them. Thankfully they are both very tiny because I only weigh 110 myself, so they fit nicely on each leg. |
yup both of my babies are lap dog |
Jewels is all lap dog and Chachi is when he wants to be |
3 outof my 4 only? Only 3 out of my 4 are lap Babies, and they are the 3 females. Artie refuses to be.......but he is always by my side or at my feet never more than 3 feet away! As a matter of fact he goes every where with me and if he is not allowed in a perticular Store he waits patiently in the Car. Except Work 4 times a week, otherwise I would have no personal life at all. :aimeeyork |
Mine are both lap babies OR they try to get as high up on my chest as they can get..they are very competitive..they want to see who can get closest to my face lol.. Dawn |
