| Newbie puppy question Yup.. I am a newbie to the forum as well as to owning a Yorkie... We got Chewie on just a couple days ago, he is almost 14 weeks. I don't see him eating a whole bunch...just a few bites here and there, he also sleeps ALOT!!! He does get a little playful here and there, but he would rather just sit in my lap and sleep. I will be changing his diet...he just isn't excited about food as a puppy should be. He also has been vomiting a couple times. Nothing I am too worried about..new home, new owners, new surrounding and nerves.... Thank you for any advise you can give... |

No Longer a Member | I wouldn't change his food unless it's a low quality food, because yorkies tend to be picky. There are several reasons for him to not eat much: 1. yorkies are small and don't eat much anyway 2. he's in a new environment, and it may be a few days before he starts eating regularly. 3. they almost never eat what the bag says. I fretted over this for a long time, and finally found that she is healthy on 6TB of food a day, not 1/2 cup like the bag says. If he's eating very, pick up a tube of Nutrical Puppy. They have it at petsmart, petco, and most other pet supply stores. Give him a dollop to lick off your finger a few times a day. It helps raise their blood sugar and it can stimulate his appetite. Anyway, the reason I say don't change his food unless it's a low quality food is that yorkies can be picky. If you keep switching up his food, he'll always pause before eating, hoping to get something better each time, then he'll always be a fussy eater. Chloe did this, (and still does once in a while). I put her on a feeding schedule, and even that took a few weeks to really kick in and work. I have also found that if I give her any special treats, like some diced cooked meats, I don't put it in her bowl with her food because then she won't eat her food the next time. I'm sure you'll get lots of ideas; since I have a feeling that my yorkie is not the only fussy eater out there |

| You should be really careful. Open his mouth and make sure his tounge and gums are pink. if they are gray he may be having a hypoglycemic attack and that is SERIOUS. if he is acting really lathargic you should take him to the vet and have him check the blood sugar level. Hypoglycemia is a serious condition and can be very dangerous. You should always be overly cautious about this. |

| thank you Thank you misty and budda!!! You guys have helped me tremendously and put my mind at ease... I will definately check on that paste. We will get it on the way home. When we left this evening, chewie was barking and whining, so he definately wasn't lathargic at that time. He actually was sleeping when I put him in, then he got up and whinned. We will see when we get home how he is doing. We would have taken him with us, but he couldn't go in with us. |
