Well just a few minutes ago I went to clip Reece's nails and first nail I did...major bleeding...next...bleeding...now Im crying...poor baby boy. I have taken Pheobe to a proffesionals places a pet-store and the vet and her nail was bleeding, so if they make mistake we are allowed too, anyway we purchased deluxe nail clipper with nail guard to prevent overcutting and we are going to try to do it our self, (since she stress at the vet so much, for shots, and ck ups) we are going to save a extra trip to the vet. (we hope)

just an FYI.....My Mom read in her dog journal that they are coming out with a new nail clipper...it's called the "quick finder" it has a red, yellow and green light on it...when it lights green it is safe to cut...they havent' come out with them yet though...if you search quick finder you will bring it up.

I don't like cutting the girls nails either...I'm always afraid to make them bleed...I have made Sadie bleed once...I just felt so bad I wanted to cry.

It takes time to learn how to cut nails right and feel confident doing it. For the small dogs, use cat scissor nail clippers. It is better suited for their small nails. And sitting by the light works too, I can see their quick when I do it that way. Remember if you aren't comfortable cutting the nails, just trim off a tiny bit each time and file it if you want. Alot of times your dog can even tell you when you are getting to close by pulling away or flenching.

You can't see the quick itself like you see in white nails but you will definitely see a lighter black on the nails if you look closely and that lighter black on the nails is the quick inside it. a professional groomer taught me this and it has never failed me. Try to look closely by the window, you will definitely see the different shade of black that I mentioned.
