Sad Any Advice for me as Kodak will be Neutured

Friday morning at 8am, he is not to eat or drink anything after 9pm tonight.
What should I ask the Dr to use or not do, or be careful doing?
What do I need to know or expect once I pick him up.
Please give Kodak a it's gonna be alright reply so I will feel better about this.
I have heard some pups don't make it, I need some reassurances here that it will be alright. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

kodak is going to be a-ok. don't worry. they are monitored under close supervision while under anesthesia. he'll only be under for max 30 minutes. Good luck, and try not to worry too too much

Silipie, I'm trying not to be nervous so it won't reflect to the dog. He alreadys hates the vets office, he shakes everytime we go there. I am going to do a search on Neuter and spays and see what I come up with. I remember a post saying to ask the vet to put them under with a shot not gas. Or it was viceversa and I forgot to ask earlier this week.

I know is very stressful, i was there and Pheobe is fine, and my friend just got her dog neutered and he is fine too, they are going to be ALRIGHT, feel free to ask the vet all your concerns too. I try to be carefull with Pheobe but my vet was right, he said that she will set her own pace and she did.

Panama, I won't be able to stay there because I have to go to work. I am going to leave work early and go back around 2pm. The thing that bothers me are the stories I have read about their weight with yorkies being to small for the anesthesia etc. I know he'll be ok and all the other pups going thru their surgerys soon.

Jazz did fine with his surgery. I think he was around 5-6 pounds then. And even little Mo the Pom-Chi (wt. 3 pounds) did great, although he had a liver shunt that we didn't know about at the time. It was diagnosed months later.
I will be praying all goes well with both the little ones having surgery tomorrow.

ok here is what's going to happen tomorrow pre, during, and post:

depending on the doctors scheduled surgery time, kodak will be chilling out in a kennel snuggled in blankets until the doc is ready. About half an hour to 20 minutes before surgery, he is going to be pre-op'd for surgery. If he has had no health problems so far they will not do blood work or an ekg. There is no need for it honestly. The pre-op drugs will be minimal because he is small. If he is calm, they may not even give him a pre-op drug. When the doc is ready for kodak's surgery they will begin to induce anesthesia. First the doc or a tech will insert a cathader into his forearm. his leg will most likely be shaved between the 'wrist' and 'elbow' when you get him back. That is where the cath was placed. Once the cath is in place, he will be connected to a bag of fluids. Next he will be induced with propofol which is a sedative. This is needed to relax the dog so his jaw muscles will be loose, which is needed to place a tracheal tube down his throat and into the airway. Once the trach tube is in place it will be connected to the Isoflurane Anesthesia which is his maintanence anesthetic during the surgery. This is the same type of anesthesia that is used in human pediatrics. Absolutely safe. Next he will be shaved for surgery from about a half inch above his penis to a half inch below his testicular area (while lying on his back). After he is shaved he will be brought into the surgery room. He will be placed on his back on the surgical table and his legs will be gently tied down and out of the surgery area. at least 5 machines will be connected to him. 1) SPO2 monitor - monitors the % saturated oxygen in the body. 2) Pulse Ox - monitors the pulse thru out surgery. 3) EKG - heart rate and rhythem. 4) temp probe. 5) carbon dioxide monitor. some hospitals also attach a blood pressure cuff and monitor BP thru out surgery. After the machines are connected a technician will scrub the area for surgery while the doc scrubs in and gowns up.

Surgery time: Neuter

The doc makes a small incision on the scrotum. The testical is pushed out. The "cords" are tied off to prevent bleeders and cut. Same is done for the other testical. Next the doc swabs inside the cavity to make sure there are no bleeders. Lastly the doc will close. Wha-La you have a neutered dog. that's the basic jist of the procedure.

Post -op
the technician cleans the incision and disconnects the machines, plus takes the dog off the iso. Tech takes the dog out of surgery and brings him to a wake up area which can either be a cage that he will be spending the rest of his time at the hospital in or some hospitals have a floor section for this area. The tech stays with the dog until he wakes up. Once the dog begins to swallow and becomes alert the trach tube is pulled. Then the tech sits with the dog for the next few minutes or however long it takes to ensure that the dog is ok and waking up normally. Once he is ok the tech will leave him to sleep it off. The dog will still be in the treatment area where he is monitored so dont think he is forgotten after the tubes are pulled.

A spay is done the same way except change testicals to ovaries and move the incision site up the belly about 3-4 inches

I hope this helps. This is the basic jist of what goes on during a spay/neuter. Kodak will be completely monitored the whole time during surgery and will be watched carefully.

Kalina, thank you so much for this information, bless you for explaining it. I am going to bed now as I was trying to finish cleaning. After I check on Kodak around 2 or 3 tomorrow afternoon, I go pick up my new puppy. Hopefully everything will go well. Thanks to everyone for your concerns.

Kodak is in My thoughts and prayers today. Try not to worry too much Mom. I think it is harder on us than it is on them.

We have had 3 of our pets fixed....ONE thing you have to remember is when you go get them pick them up carefully!!! All they may do is lay for a week or two.....ANOTHER THING.....Dont give them a bath for 2 weeks....the stitches in there stomach will sink in faster and leave a big dent in there if you give her a bath before the 2 weeks is over....SO WAIT AT LEAST 2 WEEKS!!!!.....I hope your baby will be alright !!!!
